Competition Definitions: Night: Night refers to photographs taken in the period of time between dusk and dawn when no sunlight is visible. Blue hour and sunset photos are not permitted, due to visible sunlight. Night photogra- phers generally have a choice between using artificial light and using a long , exposing the scene for seconds, minutes, or hours in order to give the film or digital sensor enough time to capture a usable image. Street: Street photography features subjects in candid situations within public places. Street photographs are mirror images of society, displaying “unmanipulated” scenes, with usually unaware subjects. It does not neces- sitate the presence of a street or even the urban environment.

PLEASE NOTE: You are required to upload images of your submissions to the competition prior to the meet- ing. However, the uploaded image or images do not have to be the final versions of the prints you make. After you upload your image, you can still tweak it for printing purposes. Any final print that is a different image than the electronic version will be disqualified, or a print that bears only a marginal resemblance to the elec- tronic version MAY be disqualified.

BCC Event Recap Field Trips to Plum Island - March 11 and March 25

Images taken from the Meetup site, clockwise from upper right: Eldad Cohen; Fern Fisher; Stu Schaffner; Karen Bryan.

Member News Member Profile: Karen Bryan When did you join the club? How did you hear about the club? I joined the BCC in February 2018. I was looking for local photography groups and did a google search and found you!

What skill level would you use to describe yourself? Intermediate

What/where is your favorite local spot to photograph? I love Rockport for the varied subjects and interest.

6 What is your favorite subject/genre to photograph? I don’t have a favorite genre/subject. I shoot what looks happy to me and what makes me happy. I’m especially happy with expressions, movement, color and small details.

What is your favorite regular BCC program? I haven’t belonged long enough to participate in any regular programs as yet, however the gallery night which was my first night, and the field trip to Plum Island were both great experiences.

What was the single best pro- gram/event you have attended? Gallery night. It gave me a good feel for the type and quality of work done by members.

What skills do you need to work on? Depth in landscapes. I also need to unlearn what I was taught at Target Portrait Studios and Newborn Baby Photography; elevate the portrait by exploring different lighting and natural poses.

Any other relevant information about you or your photography that you would like to share? Photography is exciting even though sometimes it takes work. I like watching how a scene unfolds and being able to anticipate what is about to happen. Photography is about freezing a moment in time, but it is also about having a crystal ball and seeing into the future and what others may not see.

Member Travelogue: Quintana Roo, Mexico Reported by Alison Doherty photography by Alison Doherty. The palm tree shadows showed as designs on my legs. The dry sandy path leading me to the cenote left white specs of sand on my sandal-laden feet. The surrounding area was a swamp-like forest. Our destination was a cenote, a natural pool of water that is caused by collapsed bedrock thereby exposing ground water from beneath. My friend and I were told the cenote was closed. It was our last day in Mexico so that wouldn’t do. We convinced the gatekeepers to let us in early so we could meet back up with our fellow bachelorette-celebrating friends to catch our flight. As we reached the mangrove-surrounded cenote, we saw we were not alone. Three locals, two men and a woman, were also enjoying an early morning swim. The men sat on a low hanging tree branch, sur- rounding a cooler of beer. My eyes fell on the woman who was fully submerged in the water. She seemed out of place, fully clothed in jeans and a long sleeve shirt instead of a bathing suit. She looked on curiously as we debated whether to jump in. Our question was whether there was anything in the depths of the dark water that might try to eat us. The woman appeared carefree. I put my trust in her confidence and followed suit by jumping in. A few joint cannonball sessions and we were taking photographs together. Five days earlier, seven of us had met at the Cancun airport to celebrate our friend’s last days of singledom.

7 It was my first time in Mexico and a much-anticipated trip after another New England winter. Our first stop was Playa del Carmen, a seaside city in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately thirty minutes from the Cancun airport. The stretch of beach is lined with restaurants and hotels. The city has lots of nightlife options. On our second day, we took a ferry to the island of Cozumel for an active day of snorkeling and exploring the beaches on the far side of the island. After experiencing the nightlife, and surviving a barefoot walk on the cracked pavement, we headed to Tulum, a yoga retreat town. This laid back beach town provides words of wisdom from street signs to inviting beach signs. Tulum also offers Mayan ruins, which are strategi- cally placed on a dramatic cliff that plunges into the ocean. Overall, the coastal Mexican towns of Playa del Carmen and Tulum make for a fun tropical getaway. With warm turquoise waters, fan- tastic tacos, historic ruins, and colorfully sewn fabrics you can’t go wrong. These areas are touristy for good reason.

Open A Winners 1st Place Snow Geese in Blast Off - Alfica Sehgal This image is from our trip to Bosque del Apache, New Mexico taken by Canon 5D Mark II, hand-held, with a 1/3200, f/7.1 settings. Birds move from one field to another throughout the day in search of food. It was an amazing experience to be amidst thousands of birds. I intended to capture the moment of their united take-off, the mo- tion and perhaps the ‘sound-track’ in here. The image was converted to black and white and adjusted for brightness and contrast.

2nd Place Snowy Egret - Cindy Esposito

12 3rd Place Ha Long Bay - David Long

Open B Winners 1st Place Tree in Morning Fog - Christine Huvos It was early morning mid-winter on a foggy day as I was winding my way through Franklin Park. Most everything was bathed in the fog & my eye caught this bare dark tree by the side of the road. It had so many intricate crisscrossing branches and I loved the look of it. I whipped out my handy iphone and started snapping the tree from various angles. I sharpened the branches & tightened the shot so the branches would fit the frame. In editing, I think I used a filter to make the sky more dramatic.

2nd Place Double Arch - David Roberts

13 3rd Place Dreams of Monet - Karen Bryan

Portrait Winners 1st Place Together - Yair Melamed The image was taken in North Vietnam while traveling there Feb - March 2017. We found an isolated house on a hill and I walked there, without hesitation. The group of three other photographers followed me as they knew something is there. All of a sudden, the mother, daughter and husband walk out from the house, welcoming us with gestures. The daughter at a certain point shy but happy by the new guests, leaned on her mother in the way we can see in the image. I took multiple shots, zooming in and out. The image was initially edited in LR, cropping, and major adjust- ment. Then moved to be edited in Photoshop for heavy retouching and moving distracting elements from the surrounding to avoid dis- traction from the subject and the center of the image, the portrait. Then transform to Smart Object and worked with Viveza, Nik SW plugin and finally transform to B&W using Silver Efex Pro. I like this image because it reflects rapport, relationship, and inti- macy, between daughter and mother, and the photographer, me.

2nd Place Chinese Market - David Long

14 3rd Place The Man in the Hat - Joni Lohr

Text Included Winners 1st Place Read Me - Fern Fisher This picture was taken at the FDR Memorial in Washington DC where a portion of the exhibits are intended to be accessible to people with disabilities. My idea was to use a relatively narrow depth of field to show the braille text sharply while leaving the relief sculptures less focused. I think the impact of the photo was enhanced by being in the theme “Text Included”. It was taken at mid-day in winter with a Fuji X-T1, 60 mm macro lens, 1/160, f 5.6, ISO 200. I did a significant amount of post processing in Light- room. For example, it was significantly cropped from the original and various local adjustments were added such as darkening the right side with a graduated filter to balance the darker left side and to keep the eye in the frame.

2nd Place J’existe - Mikhail Tsatsulin

15 3rd Place Immigration Rally - Eldad Cohen
