FEEL CONFIDENT WITH A DERBYSHIRE TRUSTED TRADER

Finding a company that you can trust to do some work for you can be a bit daunting – how can you be sure that you won’t get ripped off? What if things go wrong? How do you choose between lots of different companies? These sorts of dilemmas were a driving force behind the setting up by Derbyshire County Council of the Trusted Trader scheme to help local people find traders and businesses that do a good job at a fair price and provide good customer service. That was back in 2008 and the popular scheme has gone from strength to strength. These days there are nearly 17,000 searches each month on the Trusted Trader website, www.derbyshire.gov.uk/tt by people looking for reliable companies to use. Another ringing endorsement for the scheme was a recent survey which gathered feedback from more than 16,000 people who had used a Trusted Trader and an impressive 94% said they were very satisfied with the service they received. So people can have lots of confidence when employing one of the 1,200 traders who are part of the scheme. In the very unlikely event of someone having a problem with one of the traders then help is at hand. Derbyshire County Council trading standards officers can get involved in any queries involving Trusted Traders and seek to resolve them The scheme particularly helps to protect older and vulnerable adults by making it easier for them to use Trusted Traders rather than rogue traders who typically cold-call and use high pressure sales techniques. A recent development has been the inclusion of Financial Advisors who specialise in providing financial advice for people in later life and can help with matters like care fees, pensions and investments. Find out more about all aspects of Trusted Trader at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/tt or call 01629 536148. Enquiries are also welcome from businesses interested in signing up to the scheme – membership brings lots of benefits and costs only £70 - £100 per year.

Group Community Fire Safety – March 2016

Hello to you all once again.

Sad news again I am afraid to start this edition.

Fatal Fire.

Sadly on Sunday 14th February a man in his early 30s died in a house fire in Newhall, Derbyshire. It was a severe fire which the Fire and Rescue Service have concluded was accidental and had started after cooking had been left unattended. The Fire and Rescue Service have stated that ‘it could not be sure whether or not the house was fitted with working smoke alarms’.

Please therefore check your property to ensure you have a ‘working smoke alarm’ on every level of your home. Test it weekly and check on your neighbours and elderly.

The Fire & Rescue Service will carry out a ‘free survey’ of your home and give advice. They even fit Smoke Alarms, where needed free of charge. Call the Fire & Rescue Service Headquarters on 01332 77122. They will direct you to the Area Office.

Cooking Fire Safety If you do choose to deep fat fry your chips, these all-year-round fire safety tips could help reduce the risk:  Don't overfill a chip pan with oil - never fill it more than one-third full.  Be careful that it doesn't overheat - hot oil can catch fire easily.  Use a thermostat-controlled deep-fat fryer, which will make sure the fat doesn't get too hot  Never throw water on a chip pan fire.  Don't cook after drinking alcohol.  In the event of a fire, have an escape route in place.  Don't take risks by tackling a fire. Get out, stay out and call 999.  Get a smoke alarm and test it weekly.

Tea Lights start a fire in a house in at 8.00pm on Thursday 18th February. The occupants were alerted to the fire by a ‘baby alarm’ in the upstairs bedroom. They rushed upstairs to find the bathroom ablaze. They rescued their children and left the property. The ‘Baby Alarm’ had picked up the noise of the shower door collapsing in the bathroom due to the heat.

The cause of the fire? Established as ‘Tea Lights left on a fiberglass bath’ ???

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue gives you the following tips:  Never leave Burning Candles or Tea lights unattended.  Candles or Tea Lights should only ever be placed on a non-flammable surface or in a Candle Holder.  Never place Candles or Tea Lights on window sills, the side of baths or on the floor.  Never place Candles or Tea Lights on fibreglass baths  Do not place Burning Candles or Tea Lights close to curtains, bedding, clothing or plants which could catch fire.  Use Electric Candles or Tea Lights.

Fire Escape  Ensure you have a ‘Pre-planned and practiced Escape Plan’ in case you have to evacuate your home or premises.  Ensure everyone is aware of it.

Keep Safe.

My regards to you all.

A THANK YOU – CHRISTMAS CRAFTS & THINGS

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped in any way to make St Peters Church Parwich Christmas Tree & Craft Festival such a magical and successful occasion. The thought and talent which went into decorating those trees was amazing and with such short notice too. Also thank you to the Crafters who worked in the Church for the whole weekend and for all the tea & mincepie providers, not forgetting Ross Hunt who magically came up with a date for us with very little notice at such a busy time.

Thanks again to All, Gill Simpson

COFFEE MORNINGS

It was a very cold and wet day when our Coffee Morning took place on February 17th. Sadly, it meant that very few of us came along. However, we had a pleasant time chatting and putting the world to rights!! A total of £40.00 was donated and a cheque for this amount has been sent to WaterAid for their Lent Appeal. We always like to support them, particularly during Lent, as they do wonderful work in helping the world’s poorest people gain access to clean, safe water and sanitation. Their work is lifesaving. It is difficult to imagine what it would be like not to have clean water or sanitation of any description.

Careline were most grateful to receive our donation last month and have thanked us for it. They no long receive lottery funding and are trying to find ways of raising money to keep the ‘befriending service’ going. All the clients are so appreciative of being able to talk to someone, be it every day or once or twice a week.

Future Dates: March 16th and April 20th between 10.30 am and 12 noon in the Village Hall as usual. The charity to benefit from any donations in March will be the local Air Ambulance Service for Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland. Please come and join us. RH

SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE PARTY

Shrove Tuesday and the beginning of Lent were celebrated in Thorpe in the usual way with our Pancake Party and we were very pleased to welcome visitors from other parishes too – all are very welcome. Sadly, most of the children have grown up now and we certainly missed their enthusiasm but certain adults tried hard to compete with the children’s previous pancake eating records! This light-hearted evening is only possible with the help and support of many people, and in particular the “pancake makers” and the maker of some really delicious extra fillings. Thank you to everyone who helped in any way. Sue Smith

N.B. I would like to thank Sue on behalf of everybody else for all her hard work in organising this party. She always does it so well and it is time-consuming. RH

NOTES FROM THE HALL MARCH 2016

CLEAN for the QUEEN

As you know the Queen is 90 this year and we all are encouraged to clean up our areas prior to the celebrations. I am organising a Litter Pick in the village on Friday 4 March and Saturday 5 March between 10 and 1pm. I have the bags, the picking sticks etc and the enthusiasm.

Can you join me please? I already have several volunteers but we will finish with tea coffee and cake at the Tearooms each day. Please contact me at The Office.

State of the Village Roads

You will see that the roadside verges have been trashed by ALL traffic over the Winter. As you can see from the Avenue and the village and the road to the ford the road is getting wider and traffic quicker. Please can you ALL respect that farmers prefer to farm grass rather than see vehicles all over the grass. Please can you all respect that.

Well Dressings May 5-11 2016

Just a reminder that Ascension Day is on Thursday 5th May this year and that the Wells will be dressed between 5-11 May. Could all new residents note that a ONE WAY SYSTEM operates that week to avoid traffic congestion. Please could all adhere to this system.

Tissington Village Hall Committee

As already advertised, several members of the Tissington Village Hall Committee will be standing down at the Annual General Meeting in May. In particular, we will be looking for a new Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. If anyone feels able to take on board any of these roles, it would be appreciated if they would contact Helen Walker, on 01335 390400. All are welcome to the meeting and the date will be published shortly.

The Hall is a much valued facility which enhances our lovely village. The present Committee have worked hard to ensure that it is in very good order and it would be a huge shame if this Hall could not continue in its present role of ensuring a warm and inviting space for any social event or meeting held in the Village.

TISSINGTON AND LEA HALL PARISH COUNCIL

Minutes of the meeting held on 7th December 2015 at Tissington Village Hall

Present: Chairman: Chris Carr, George Maxwell, Stuart Naylor, John Etches, Vice Chairman: Sir Richard Fitzherbert Apologies: None Clerk: Joanne Poitevin.

Declaration of member’s interest: Sir Richard declares his position as a DDC councillor. Chris Carr as a Peak Park Member

Minutes of the meeting on: 5th October 2015 were circulated and signed as correct. The minutes are to be sent to the parish magazine.

Matters Arising: 1. Minor Maintenance Grant: The grant that Tissington & Lea Hall currently claims to help pay for the maintenance of footpaths is currently under consultation. If the new proposals are accepted the change will happen in June 2016. The proposals are that although the type of work that can be undertaken will expand to tarmac, the system will be a bidding process. The councillors and the clerk will work to ensure that the necessary action is taken so bids are put in a timely manner, should this be necessary. 2. Xmas Bins: The clerk has place the information in the notice board, website, and facebook page to let parishioners know the collection arrangement for the holiday season.

Finance:

1. The table below defines finances for October and November 2016 presented to the councillors:

4. Accounts Business: a. The Vat has been claimed up to the end October 2015 to the value of £99.00 b. The Minor maintenance grant of £495.00 has been submitted. c. The Reimbursable expenditure grant has been claimed and received. £477.00 d. John Etches name needs to be added to the cheque book signature portfolio of the Parish Council.

5. Precept: The Clerk presented the councillors with table detailing the spend comparison of 2014 and 2015, and the previous precept amounts since 2011. The councillors also had a copy of the year’s accounts with a projected forecast of the predicted spend until March 2016. After some discussion the councillors voted to submit a precept value of £2500 for 2016/17.

Planning: No new applications have been received in the last two months.

Tissington Parish Business 1. Cattle Grid: The cattle grid by Keepers Cottage has been reported as dangerous. The clerk will report this to the council. The clerk has had no reply to this complaint, and will chase this again. The Cattle Grid had been repaired; however the councillors consider the repair substandard. The clerk will report this to the County Council. Chase again. 2. Broken Road Signs: There are two broken road signs in the village, one on the Avenue, and on Darfields Land. The Clerk will chase this again, third time reported. 3. Village Phone Box: Cllr Carr asked the Clerk to report the BT phone box as it is in need of repair. This has been reported and inspected by BT, repair should be week commencing 7th December. Works No: EM9AAG33 4. Leaf Clearance: The councillors would like to thank Adele for complaining re: Leaf Litter which has meant a sweep of the village.

TMP (Tissington Traffic Management Plan) Update: No further update.

AOB a. Housing: Cllr Fitzherbert stated that D Dales have a commitment to build 6000 homes in the future. Ideas being mentioned were new builds, and sharing the responsibility out to all villages, however in a county with a National Park, the areas to build are reduced. The problem with there being a national park within Derbyshire is that all of the allocation needs to be built in half the county. The issues of building new housing within National Park land are complex, and within an Estate village, such as Tissington even more so, the older properties doesn’t necessarily suit people with young families, and the village has a imbalanced population. The Council would invite parishioners to consider new housing, and welcome your views on the subject. b. Minor Project Fund: Sir Richard had received a project to overhaul the Ash Tip, by Town Well, from the Forestry Club, it would involve children planting new trees, and general cleaning the area, which has become very untidy and overgrown. c. Announcement: Sadly, Revd Andy Larkin has resigned, he expects to move to his new posting early 2016. The councillors would like to thank him for his service, and wish him well in his new position and home.

Village Website & Facebook Page: 1. The clerk presented a graph showing the amount of hits per page on the website. Also that the website has now been advertised in the Parish magazine.
