An appeal from The Thursday Friends

The present committee members of the above club would appreciate extra help at the afternoon tea parties. Anybody who has some spare time on their hands on the second Thursday of every month, could you help out by coming to serve the teas. This would be a great help to us as we find we are now needing more able bodied people. We have between 35 to 40 ladies and gents coming to our tea parties every month, and they really enjoy themselves. There is entertainment, and at Christmas they have a meal at the Red House and in May there is a bus trip ending with high tea. All this is free. The money to pay for it all comes from the raffles and donations every month and the usual charity shop that we have.

PLEASE COME AND HELP US

The next tea party is on Thursday 9th February at 2.30pm in the Town Hall Looking forward to seeing you.

PoP into the New Year Last year the group were fund raising to the last with the Christmas Card delivery service. As this was the fi rst year we had done this we had some teething problems but thanks to guidance and support from Maime amongst others, the cards were delivered in all weathers and a total of £400 was raised. All PoP members enjoyed playing postie and would like to thank everyone who used this service. The funds will be used to enhance the summer display. 2012 has already seen the group kick into action. This year will be big year for the group who have decided, that based upon the groups previous years successes in the Take a Pride in environmental competition, to compete in the Beautiful campaign for the fi rst time. "It is the group's aim to restore pride in our town through our environmental work so entering the competition and raising the profi le of Coupar Angus works towards this" commented Maggie Langelaan, chair of the group. " We hope that this decision will encourage others to support our work in a number of ways from baking for fund raisers, planting and even paperwork!" she added. The groups fund raising will continue this month with a family ceilidh in the Town Hall on Friday 24th, 7.30-10.30. Tickets are available through Florence at the Town Hall. Pride of Place meet the last Tuesday of every month in the council chambers of the Town Hall at 7pm, and anyone wishing to come along to hear more about what we do would be most welcome. There is no obligation to come regularly or help out!! The group are always keen to hear the views and ideas of anyone living in and around the town. Anyone wishing to get involved can contact Florence at the Town Hall or Rona on 628865. Page 6 Issue 16 Wiktoria

Lots of you may already know that Wiktoria and her family are down in Oxford just now so that she can get three weeks intensive physiotherapy to help her strengthen her muscles. They left on the 22nd January. To help we are holding a Coffee Morning on Saturday 18th February in the Town Hall. Anyone who would like to have a stall, please contact Ann on 01828 627587.

HORSE FAIR ORGANISERS CALL ‘WOAH!’ The group organising the Horse Fair has decided to disband, and put the remaining funds into trust with CART to be available for any new group wanting to revive the concept in future. Although there were a large number of people helping on the day, and who would no doubt have helped again, the group lacked enough members able to put in the time to do all the essential preparation to make sure the event was safe, legal, and properly organised. They hope that having been both popular and successful, the event might well re-appear in future years. Anyone interested in taking up the reins (groan) should contact the CART office, who could put them in touch with the past organisers for any information or help they may be able to assist with. Telephone 01828 628569 or email [email protected]. Cando February 2012 Page 7 Illuminators We would like to thank everyone that gave us donations last year towards the new lights. The majority of people in Coupar Angus seemed to think they were great but a certain few must have had other ideas. The lights on the Christmas tree were vandalised three times. The last time was at Hogmanay when they were completely pulled apart, so it was better to leave them than try and sort them again. The police have been informed. We know the kids who were there the first time as they were seen by two or three witnesses.

It is disheartening to think that this could happen after all the hard work that went into the fundraising to get new lights and the effort of the people who helped to put them up.

We will still carry on fundraising and a thrift shop is booked for October this year. “we can help catch the plonkers well Rodney can” Page 8 Issue 16 What’s New…. The Coupar Angus Townscape Heritage Initiative has been in the town for almost 5 years, with all scheduled projects finished. In this time a number of properties have undergone extensive regeneration, costing in the region of £5million pounds. Some of this money was invested by Council, Historic Scotland, Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust, Heritage Lottery Fund, formerly Perthshire Housing Association and many more. This was matched by house holders and businesses investing in their properties making a world of difference to the look of the town. Someone said to me recently ‘It is like a child growing up… you don’t notice it because you see it every day’. Do you remember what Coupar Angus looked like before the changes…..? Training in the restoration of traditional masonry was delivered by the Scottish Lime Centre to Supervisors in the Criminal Justice Section of P&K Council. They have supervised the repair of the wall in the Commercial Street Car Park and are continuing to use their new skills throughout the county.

Parts of Coupar Angus town are within a conservation area. As from the 6th February 2012 there are new procedures if you want to change the exterior of your building. Please see the article in this edition of the CAN do.

Pictured above is retiring WM Ian Norrie, being presented with the traditional firefighter’s axe by the newly promoted WM Kev McKay.

Ian retired from the Coupar Angus Fire Service in January 2012 with over 38 years service to Tayside Fire & Rescue and the Community of Coupar Angus.

Ian started his career way back in 1973 with his interview at Coupar Angus Fire Station Blairgowrie Road with the Late Sub Officer Sandy Dow senior.

It is with mixed feelings I leave the job, friends and colleagues behind after all these years but life goes on, time for a change and new things to do, feet up slipper on, if only.

However, the time has come for me to hang up my uniform and say thank you to all the people I have met, it has been an honour to have served the community. I wish everyone of you all the best for the future. Cheers Ian Page 22 Issue 16
