Senior men in Conna were given a rare treat recently when they were invited to a showing of archive footage of the legendary Christy Ring in action. The footage showed Christy in rare form in the Munster final against Tipperary and training tips from the maestro himself on everything from free taking and trapping a fast ball to Eddie Kelleher (Ballincollig) and Doireann O'Leary (Donoughmore) photopgraphed at the Oriel House Wedding Fayre with Cait O'Leary killing high balls and taking sideline cuts, all in Christy’s and Margaret Kelleher. Picture Mike English own voice and demonstrating the skills himself. The viewing which was organised by Avondhu Blackwater Partnership took place in the Conna Social Centre who very gener- ously allowed use of their wonderful facilities for the show. Mary Allen the Programme Coordinator of the Blackwater Community Connect commented, “We provide several existing services for the benefit of the senior men in the Avondhu Blackwater region. Some of the men spoke to us and told us what they would like to see more of, so we are delighted we can react to that and put on these shows. It demonstrates our flexibility when it comes to the delivery of our services.” The performance was advertised in the preceeding weeks in the Conna area and the attendance was surprisingly large given that this was the first showing, a testament to the magnetic pull Christy Ring still exerts today, over thirty years after his premature passing away. The skills he displayed in the showing, his strength and crisp pass- ing had the men murmuring with admiration and nodding in remem- brance, some of whom were at the match that was shown. After this the men were treated to a full screening of the 1966 All Ireland Hurling final between Cork and Kilkenny, a real old fash- ioned pull and drag affair, where Kilkenny led for much of the game only for Cork to eventually prevail and bag their first All Ireland in over a decade. Afterwards tea, coffee and cakes were provided by staff in the Conna Social Centre and there was an impromptu rendi- tion of ‘The Bould Christy Ring’ by one of the men. Avondhu Blackwater Partnership plan to roll the scheme out across the Blarney region in the coming months, for further details on upcoming screenings please contact Mary Allen on 025 33411. Dan is no stranger to epic expeditions. In 2003 he was one of the principal organisers of a Vintage Tractor Drive from to and back. This drive raised enough funds to set up a Creamery in Malawi. In 2005 Dan went to Malawi along with some of the tractor drivers and members of the organising committee for the grand opening of the creamery. Then in 2007 he helped organise a massively successful Night at the Dogs in the Curraheen Stadium which funded the setting up of grain mills in Rwanda and this year he is promoting the 40 Day Lenten Fast for Bóthar to raise much needed funds for another Creamery in Rwanda. By providing livestock as development aid Bóthar is giving a Living gift of a farm animal to a poor family and thereby giving them an opportunity to improve their circumstances and by working with their animal over time, to raise themselves up to a position of relative comfort. Each family must pass on the first female offspring born to their animal to a neighbouring family so that the benefit multiplies. If you admire what the Blarney Walking Group are doing and would like to help Dan Martin in achieving another Creamery in Rwanda, please take a Sponsor Card, donate a dairy heifer, a goat, rabbits, bees, fish or trees for Bóthar or send a contribution of any amount to Dan Martin, Bóthar Fundraiser, Inchinaugh, Glenville, County Cork / phone 086 1733165 or contact John McLoughlin, leader of the Blarney Walking Group St. Patrick’s Weekend Expedition on 087 2426764. Have you True Grit to take on the Pioneer Challenge? Now is a good time to get ready to reduce or abstain from alcohol for Lent. In the last few days you have probably decided how you can do this. It’s a great time to do some Spring Cleaning in our lives, to make a few changes. Many people give up or take on different challenges at this time and we in the Pioneer Association are challenging you to give some thought to cut down on your intake of alcohol for Lent. The launch of ‘ Pioneer Challenge 2011’ took place, at the UCC Climbing wall in the Mardyke Arena. In this wonderful venue, people of all ages are challenging themselves daily, individually or with others in team sports. People are learning new skills, stretching their potential across a whole range of activities. This is the pioneer vision: to build a society where people live to their full potential and where alcohol can be enjoyed in moderation avoiding the fall-out that arises in society from alcohol abuse. For further information contact Róisín at 018749464 or email [email protected] If you are up for this challenge you can register your efforts at www.truegrit-pioneerchallenge.blogspot .com.
