The subject of Scottish Fairs in general has not received much attention from the student of past-time institutions, and the following notes, which do not pretend to be exhaustive even in regard to the special subject with which they deal, may perhaps incite someone better qualifie int o mattee g oth o d t tharm a mor nI e thoroughly. Fortunately, we have a very valuable foundation on which to build. It is with the object of not letting this interesting collection of information, which it must have cost a great deal of labour to compile, be lost sight of, that this little paper has been prepared. The grantee of the privilege of holding a, fair was usually authorised" to exact: (1) tolls or reasonable charges on the sale of articles sold, or exposed for sale, in the fair; (2) stallag r paymeno e t for libert o erecyt t stalls packag) (3 ; r payeo - ment to the owner of the soil for leave to break it up for the erection of booths or stalls. There was attached to the fair a court of " piepowder " dustr o y feet, which administered justic e cas f th dispute eo n ei s between buyer and seller, and generally kept order in the fair. After this they rapidly decreased, and in 1888 fair's were held only in about 860 places. In Scotland fairs existed from a very early period. But, perhaps more than all the above causes, a piece of legislative action in 1846 sounded the death-knell of all fairs. This was the abolition of the exclusive privileges formerly enjoyed by freemen of burghs and member Merchane th f so t Guild. Thes formerld eha exclusive yth e right of trading in their respective toAvns, and it was only on fair days that this right was in abeyance. But this privilege being abolished by the Ac f Parliameno t f thao t t year, fairs became practically valuelessd an , the right of holding them fell gradually into disuse and disappeared after having served its day. The early fairs were so much associated with the celebrations of the Church t surprisin,no thas i t ti fino gt d mos thef o t m fixed with reference to the festival day of some particular saint. A parish generally held holiday on the anniversary of the saint to whom its church was dedi- cated. Special services woul held mordbe and , e tha usuanthe l average of parishioners would attend these. This would lead also to the attend- anc f travellineo g merchants takin e opportunitgth e concoursth f yo o et sell their wares and supply the domestic wants of the people.

    S E C T I O N 9 A Parishes and Congregations: names no longer in use The following list updates and corrects the ‘Index of Discontinued Parish and Congregational Names’ in the previous online section of the Year Book. As before, it lists the parishes of the Church of Scotland and the congregations of the United Presbyterian Church (and its constituent denominations), the Free Church (1843–1900) and the United Free Church (1900–29) whose names have completely disappeared, largely as a consequence of union. This list is not intended to be ‘a comprehensive guide to readjustment in the Church of Scotland’. Its purpose is to assist those who are trying to identify the present-day successor of a former parish or congregation whose name is now wholly out of use and which can therefore no longer be easily traced. Where the former name has not disappeared completely, and the whereabouts of the former parish or congregation may therefore be easily established by reference to the name of some existing parish, the former name has not been included in this list. Present-day names, in the right-hand column of this list, may be found in the ‘Index of Parishes and Places’ near the end of the book. The following examples will illustrate some of the criteria used to determine whether a name should be included or not: • Where all the former congregations in a town have been united into one, as in the case of Melrose or Selkirk, the names of these former congregations have not been included; but in the case of towns with more than one congregation, such as Galashiels or Hawick, the names of the various constituent congregations are listed.

THE JAMESONS OF MAINE s. m. jameson | november 01, 2018 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this report is to lay out my opinion based on my research of the Jamesons who arrived in New England in 1718, settling into Milton, Massachusetts and in Falmouth, Maine. By doing so, I am laying the foundation of a family thoroughly integrated with the Scots who arrived upon the colonial shores of North America with the thought that religious and personal freedoms were at the apex for emigration. DNA makes a strong case toward establishing their origins and toward straightening out the fabric of their history, a tapestry rich in heroism and suffering that can be applied to nearly all the Scot’s families that sought release from the political ineptitude of the European crowns, their repressive role in limiting intelligent thinking by others beneath the grand scale of royal self-opinionated and self-appointed elitism. As political systems fade, new ideas breached the old-world habits of the oligarchy1 and autocratic2 excesses to foment and spear-head progression toward new forms of governing. How many times do we as a people struggle with conservative liberalism3, possibly the first sign of innovative expressions; results which modestly attack the conservative idealisms of a changing nation. The Scot’s rejected the abusive, authoritative role of the current monarchy and forged ahead to build a political system that included their own doctrine. That movement fostered a “more perfect union” one which greatly influenced the thinking of former colonials into a nation greater than the sum of their parts.

Evidence of settlement situated around Auchalick Bay and the coast and terraces along and above the Auchalick River indicates that the landscape was a relatively fertile one. The presence of standing stones and cup and ring markings signifies that this fertility was no doubt appreciated in the prehistoric period, and it seems likely that the landscape contains evidence of occupation from at least the Neolithic period. Beyond these monuments, there are the remains of a number of settlement sites of age unknown, but likely to date between the late medieval to early modern period. Without excavation, it is difficult to positively identify above-ground remains of settlement dating from before that time, but the prehistoric presence on the farm along with relatively dense settlement evidence suggests that remains of other periods are present but yet to be found. Mr Bulmer, Stockfield, Northumberland, also worked on these balls and gave his lists and NMAe cardth o st 1936n S i informatioe Th . n containe Colesn di Bulmer''n papeo d an r s cards has been of the greatest assistance to me in preparing this study. In 1911 Coles knew of 180 carved stone balls, whereas now 387 are known to be in 36 museums throughout the country and in private collections. Not all of those listed by Coles and by Bulmer have I been able to trace; many wer privatn ei e collections, several wer museumn ei locatede t cannob sbu w no t .
