UdeM athlete records 9th at nationals
Three Université de Moncton athletes completed their season at the U Sports track and field championships in Windsor, Ont., on the weekend.
Jean-Luc Bastarache, Constance Gil-man and Isabelle Morris were entered in the national championships for the Aigles Bleus and Aigles Bleues.
Bastarache, of Truro, N.S., finished ninth in the men’s heptathlon with 4,432 points.
He was fourth in the pole vault (4.10 metres); fifth in the shot put (11.14 metres); eighth in the long jump (6.07 metres), high jump (1.74 metres) and 1,000 metres (2:54,40); 11th in the 60-metre hurdles (9.17 seconds); and 12th in the 60 metres (7.78 seconds).
Kieran Johnston of the Saskatchewan Huskies won the heptathlon with 5,259 points.
Gilman, a native of Brackley Beach, P.E.I., came in 13th in the women’s shot put with a best throw of 11.08 metres. She was the Atlantic University Sport conference champion.
Sarah Mitton of the Windsor Lancers claimed gold with a distance of 15.09 metres. Morris, of Miramichi, took 16th spot in the women’s high jump. She was unable to jump the 1.55-metre high bar. Morris was the AUS conference champ.
Maja Naruszewicz of Guelph captured gold with a 1.74-metre jump.
Miramichi’s Sydney MacDonald, competing for the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds, finished 11th in the women’s pentathlon with a score of 3,156 points.
Veronique Omalosanga of Moncton, a member of the Laval Rouge et Or, ran in the women’s 4x200-metre relay preliminaries and helped her school qualify for the final. Laval took eighth place overall.

Fredericton’s Andrew LeBlanc claimed bronze in the men’s 1,000 metres in 2:28.66 for the Guelph Gryphons. He also won gold in the men’s 4x800- metre relay with Guelph.
Fredericton’s Jack Berkshire, competing for the Toronto Varsity Blues, placed fourth in the men’s 300 metres in 34.59.
