RESTRUCTURING THE SETTLEMENT PATTERN OF A PERAEAN DEME THROUGH PHOTOGRAMMETRY AND GIS: THE CASE OF PHOINIX (BOZBURUN PENINSULA, TURKEY) E.Deniz OĞUZ-KIRCA Middle East Technical University, Dept. of Settlement Archaeology, Turkey Received: 25/04/2014 Accepted: 19/07/2014 Corresponding author: [email protected] ABSTRACT The archaeology world has been in a trend of exploring the rural landscapes often in- separable from the periphery of urban localities. The deme of Phoinix, lying in the coun- tryside of the Bozburun Peninsula (in SW Turkey) is a quasi-coastal rural habitat where the way of implantation of the settlement components quite conceals the typical aspects of a chora. This paper aims to reconstruct the settlement pattern and explain the change process of the long unattended deme of Phoinix as well as the basic motives behind its spatial organization during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. The discussions hereunder are based on the results of the field campaigns carried out in 2009-2012i and the data insofar as analyzed through the application of photogrammet- ric study and GIS. The results have revealed that the built areas, which are made up of only 2% of terrain, occurred up to 200 m where the slope values reached 30ο over terra- rosa soil cover, regardless of aspect. The overall silhouette, as highly affected by the frag- mented environments, has put forward that the Classical deme transformed itself into a dendritic pattern extending as far as 1.3 km as it grew into the Hellenistic era. There is possibility that the demes and the Island could have had long recognized organic, perhaps merely amicable relations (but greatly in the economic sense) before the Peraea’s full integration into the “colonial” sphere of Rhodes, dating far back to the Archaic era (Aydaş 2010). In the course of Rhodian control, any type relation could have had expression in the settlement pat- tern and new ways of living in Phoinix and the other demes of the Peraea. Some Thoughts on the History of North-Western Lycia in the Late Bronze and Iron Ages Summary: The present article contains observations on the invasion of Lycia by the Hittite king Tudhaliya IV as described in the Yalburt inscription. The author questions the commonly found identification of the land of VITIS/Wiyanwanda with the city of Oinoanda on account of the problems raised by the reading of the sign VITIS as well as of archaeological and strategical observations. With the aid of Lycian and Greek inscriptions the author argues that the original Wiya- nawanda/Oinoanda was located further south than the city commonly known as Oinoanda situated above İncealiler. These insights lead to a reassessment of the Hittite-Luwian sources concerning the conquest of Lycia.

A total of 29 drifters were released in September 2008 and February 2009 at key locations south of the Bosphorus and in the central part of the sea. The spatial structures and temporal variability are described together with the atmospheric conditions of the Marmara Sea during the period of study. The behavior of drifters with respect to the wind was qualitatively analyzed. The pseudo-Eulerian velocity statistics were computed from the interpolated positions and maps of the mean currents were produced using the data sorted by experiment. The results are the first of their kind in the area and complement previous findings obtained by means of hydrographic and ADCP measurements. The overall surface flow is westward oriented from the Bosphorus Strait to the Dardanelles Strait. A jet-like flow that enters the Marmara Sea from the Bosphorus Strait and, meandering, crosses the sea prevailed during the entire study period.

Bozburun Bozburun Peninsula Marmaris, Turkey LuxuryVillasTurkey.com Bozburun Bozburun is a sleepy and quiet little fishing and boat building village far out on the edge of the Turkish southwest mainland, as close to the Greek islands as you can be without leaving land. It is on the tip of the Bozburun Peninsula, classed as a National Park by the Turkish Authorities so protected from high rise hotel de- velopments. In the village there is a small and popular harbour known to sailors for a long time already. Along the Peninsula are beautiful villages including Orhaniye, Turgut, Bayir and Selimiye. This is the real unspoilt Turkey so popular with guests wanting to expe- rience authentic rural Turkey where life has remained largely unchanged for generations. Bozburun is world famous for its boat building where the wooden Turkish Gulets are lovingly constructed by hand using genera- tions old traditions. Gulets built in Bozburun are sought after throughout Europe so you will find many Bozburun Gulets cruising the waters of Italy and Croatia. The permanent population is only about 2400. The village faces across the sea to the Greek island of Simi, only 15 km away from the “aquarium”, which is the locals’ name of the reef separating the bay from the open sea. Bozburun is one of the key stops on the popular sailing route of the Blue Cruises (Private Gulet Cruises) as well as private yachts of all kinds. The vil- lage has a small and charming little harbour, several restaurants and cafés, shops of different kind, mini grocery stores, butchers, fish store, real estate broker, pharmacy, car rental and a tourist information office.

Turkish people & Culture Contrary to some people’s opinion (usually those who have never visited Turkey before), the Turkish people are very proud people. They are very nationalistic and love their flag. You will see the flag flying all over Turkey and many statues, and pictures of their ‘Father’ - Ataturk. They are extremely family oriented and are very fond of children and in return the children show much respect for their elders. Conscript is still operated in Turkey, a practise that teaches discipline and respect at the right time in life for most Turkish people. The Muslim religion has to be admired, it is mostly about caring for others and they do not condone the extremists view. Ramadan is practised by choice, even when it’s 50ºC! II. National Symposium On The Aegean Islands, 2-3 July 2004, Gökçeada - Çanakkale OPENING SPEECH Ali KURUMAHMUT Prime Ministry of Navigation Counsellorship Marine Transportation General Manager The Aegean Sea lies between the Turkish and the Greek main lands, as well as between the Morea peninsular and the southwestern edges of the Anatolian coasts, with the extension of the islands of Çuha, Küçük Çuha, Girit, Kaşot, Kerpe and Rodos that constitute its outer natural boundaries. In terms of the geographical structure, the Aegean, a semi-closed sea, has geological and geo-morphological characteristics peculiar to itself: it has about 1800 islands, islets and rocks of various sorts, as well as a number of geographical formations, scattered al over the Sea. There is little wonder that all these characteristics make the Aegean Sea a special one. The Aegean dispute between Greece and Turkey has been complicated for a number of reasons: for instance, there are many islands in the Aegean that Turkey ceded to Greece through international treaties. And these islands lying in the natural extension of the Turkish mainland surround Anatolia from north to the south. But Athens makes claims of sovereignty over many islands, islets, and rocks though Ankara never ceded any of them to Greece officially. The most obvious and famous case would be the Kardak rocks crisis that erupted between Turkey and Greece at the beginning of 1996. These complications make the Aegean a sea that is of special importance among the seas of the world. It is possible to divide the Aegean Islands into five categories in terms of their geographical locations, geological and geo-morphological characteristics, the historical perspectives of the sovereign powers to which they belonged, the manner in which the sovereignty over them was determined through international treaties, as well as their importance for geo-political and strategic purposes.

The Oracle and Cult of Ares in Asia Minor Matthew Gonzales ERODOTUS never fails to fascinate with his rich and detailed descriptions of the varied peoples and nations H mustered against Greece by Xerxes;1 but one of his most tantalizing details, a brief notice of the existence of an oracle of Ares somewhere in Asia Minor, has received little comment. This is somewhat understandable, as the name of the proprietary people or nation has disappeared in a textual lacuna, and while restoring the name of the lost tribe has ab- sorbed the energies of some commentators, no moderns have commented upon the remarkable and unexpected oracle of Ares itself.
