The Georgian Parrs Wood Estate was created in 1790 and occupied by the famous Ffarington and Heald families until 1920 when it passed to Manchester Corporation. The original Grade II stables, cobbled stableyard, haylofts, ostler’s house and part of the original gardens and greenhouses can still be seen. Open from 12.00 to 16.00 on Saturday only. • Apples, plants, jams and honey on sale. • Guided tours on an ad-hoc basis.

2 The Towers * ~ The Towers, Wilmslow Road, M20 2FZ Former home of Editor of the Manchester Guardian and of Daniel Adamson instigator of the Manchester Ship Canal scheme. From 1920 it was the headquarters of the Shirley Institute where many textile breakthroughs occurred. The entrance hall will be open from 13.00 to 16.00 on Sunday only. • See the imposing staircase and magnificent stained-glass windows. • Towers booklet on sale detailing the history of the house and the whole estate.

3 The Eagle Gate * Parsonage Gardens, M20 2RQ A walk around Fletcher Moss Park and Parsonage Gardens with an emphasis on their history and that of the two houses in their grounds. Meet at the Eagle Gate to Parsonage Gardens at 10.30 on Saturday and Sunday. Led by Fletcher Moss volunteer and an associate. • The tour lasts for approximately two hours. • Wear suitable footwear.

4 St James’ Church * ☕ ~ Stenner Lane, M20 2RQ Founded 1236. Grade II* listed building with many memorials and stained-glass windows to famous Lancashire and Cheshire families including the Mosleys, the Nevills, the Watts family, Queen Elizabeth II's ancestors, Fletcher Moss' family, Bradshaw's printer and many Victorian Manchester merchants. Baptism place of the last Lancashire Martyr, St Ambrose Barlow, in 1585. Graveyard dates back to1326. Church open from 14.00 to 17.00 on Saturday and 12.00 to 17.00 on Sunday. Belltower open from 14.00 to16.00 on both days to meet the bellringers and try your hand at ringing the bells which date from 1727. Saturday Also try our Victorian handbells. • Family and local history information, booklets, cards and maps on sale. 9th & • On Sunday plants on sale, stone carving and information about the church's Sunday 10th involvement in Didsbury in Bloom and the spiritual walk in the graveyard. September • Jams, marmalade, and chutneys, honey and fruit crumbles on sale. Church open on Sunday for worship at 9.00 and 10.30. All welcome.

Didsbury Civic Society: www.didsburycivicsociety.org 5 The Old Parsonage * ~ Stenner Lane, M20 2RQ Original parts of this magnificent house probably date back to the mid-sixteenth century with fine extensions added between 1820 and 1830. Its most famous owner was Fletcher Moss, JP, Alderman, philanthropist and author, who left the building, gardens and other land to Manchester City Council in 1919. After a long life as a Museum and Art Gallery it was then turned into offices. In September 2012 the building was opened as a community hub by the Didsbury Parsonage Trust who acquired it on a lease from Manchester City Council and raised nearly £160,000 for renovation. Open from 14.00 to 17.00 on Saturday and 10.00 to 17.00 on Sunday. • Display of timeline of images of house relating the dates to world events. • Display of images relating to the proposed new stained glass sundial. • On Sunday only from 10.00 to 16.00 the Alpine House in the gardens will be open and ad-hoc horticultural, guided tours of the gardens available. • Didsbury Civic Society stand and display. On Saturday at 14.30 and 19.00 Mike Shaw from the British Sundial Society will be giving a talk about sundials and how they work. When Fletcher Moss lived in the Old Parsonage there was a Stained Glass Sundial in the library. Stained Glass Sundials are rare and the Trustees of the Old Parsonage have plans to restore it. 6 Nazarene College * ☕ ~ Dene Road, M20 2GU The Grade II listed White House building with many Art Deco features was built originally as a private home for William Melland, and was later occupied by Philip Godlee. In 1959 the building was bought and became The British Isles Nazarene College, later Nazarene Theological College. Open from 10.00 to 14.00 on Saturday only. • Tours of the historical buildings and grounds at 11.00 and 13.00. • Informative displays for people to browse.

7 Didsbury Church of England Primary School * ~ Elm Grove, M20 6RL The school dates from 1612. The oldest part on the present site dates from 1878 with a WW1 War Memorial which can be accessed from Grange Lane. This year the display will commemorate the former members of the school who lost their lives during 1917. The Grade 11 listed Arts and Crafts building dates from 1910. School history books on sale. Open from 10.00 to 16.00 on Saturday only with tours available during the day. Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th September * Listed Buildings ☕ Refreshments Available Didsbury Civic Society: www.didsburycivicsociety.org 8 Warburton Street ~ Didsbury, M20 6WA Warburton Street, leading away from Wilmslow Road is the oldest street in Didsbury. Its cobbles, with original stone pavements, are a remnant of a previous age. Some terraced cottages dating from the 1830s are still residential but others have been completely converted to thriving shops lead by the bookshop that has been trading on the street since the 1950s. • Shops open on Saturday only.

9 Didsbury Library * ~ 692 Wilmslow Road M20 2DN The library in it’s 102nd year opened on 15th May 1915. It was funded by Andrew Carnegie following requests from Fletcher Moss. It was built on the site of Victorian cottages which were demolished in 1912 and the bowling green of The Wellington Inn. Open 09.00 to 13.00 and 14.00 to 17.00 on Saturday only. • Come and view our beautiful Arts and Crafts library.

10 Didsbury United Reformed Church (Formerly Grosvenor St Aidan’s) * ☕ ~ Corner of Parkfield Road South and Palatine Road, M20 6DA An Edwardian Presbyterian church built in 1901 for a largely Scottish congregation and dedicated to St Aidan. It is constructed of Accrington brick and Westmorland slate with a spire and unusual flying buttresses. Open from 10.30 to 16.30 on Saturday only. • Well worth a visit, especially for the art-nouveau, stained-glass windows. • Interpretive material for windows and other features. • A children's corner well-stocked with toys and for painting and colouring. You are welcome to attend our Sunday service at 10.45.

11 Manchester Islamic Centre ☕ ~ 271 Burton Road, M20 2WA Built in red Accrington brick as a Methodist church in the Edwardian era. Open from 13.00 to 17.00 on Sunday only. • Refreshments throughout the day - snacks and finger foods. • Displays, talks, Q & A sessions and guided tours. • Henna tattooing / painting, a calligraphy demonstration and an exhibition of traditional clothing.

12 Lapwing Lane Arcade ☕ ~ Lapwing Lane, M20 6UR The shops and their arcade were built in 1913 and known originally as the Moorfield Arcade having been built on the site of a house called Moorfield. Almost Manchester's only surviving arcade of this type, it has been restored to its former glory following a campaign by FOLLA (Friends of the Lapwing Lane Arcade) to restore it. FOLLA’s Trustees have decided to add an exciting new feature to the arcade. They have commissioned renowned local wood sculptor, Andy Burgess, to create carvings of lapwings to adorn either end of the parade. On Sunday at 17.30 an official unveiling will take place with refreshments and music. 13 Christ Church * ☕ ~ Darley Avenue, M20 2ZD The Church was built in 1881 as a gift to the community from Mr William Roberts of Darleydale and cost £13,000. It was, for many years, known as ‘Christ Church-in-the-fields’ due to its placement in a semi-rural setting. Open from Thursday to Saturday from 10.00 to 16.00. • Come and see the beautiful alabaster and marble WW1 memorial. This was erected in the early 1920s in the form of a reredos in the late 'Arts and Crafts' style. • View the ‘Memorial Tree’ created by pupils from local primary schools, stimulated by the WW1 memorial. • A display of floral art work. The Church will be open on Sunday morning for quiet contemplation with a service at 11.00. All welcome.

14 Cavendish Community Primary School ~ Cavendish Road, M20 1JG Cavendish has been the educational heart of West Didsbury for more than a century and continues to serve the community today. The main building, designed by architect Ernest Woodhouse, dates from 1904 and is a fine example of early 20th century civic design. The exterior of the building features red Ruabon brick, terracotta bands and decorative moulded terracotta panels, whilst Art Nouveau influence is clearly seen inside the building in the glazed tiling and fireplaces. Pine block flooring, wrought iron roof arches and glazed fixed screens are all still intact, as are the distinctive wrought iron gates to the front of the school. The school also has a beautiful copper World War 1 memorial in the main entrance that remembers former pupils who lost their lives in action. Open from 10.30 to 14.30 on Sunday only.

15 St Nicholas Church * ☕ ~ 408 Kingsway, M19 1PL This Grade II* listed building was the first church designed by architect, Nugent Francis Cachemaille Day, and was opened in 1932. Between 2000 and 2002 a major refurbishment and remodelling project changed the internal layout whilst retaining the exterior as originally designed. Open Saturday 10.00 to 16.00 and 12.00 to 16.00 on Sunday. • Visitors’ guides, bookmarks and cards for sale. • Art exhibition by Chorlton Art Group. Sunday Services 08.30 and 10.30. A talk, by local historian, Diana Leitch, to celebrate the work of Emily Williamson founder of the RSPB and Robert Wood Williamson, her husband, who created the alpine garden at the Croft. This garden is now known as Fletcher Moss Botanical Gardens. Retiring collection.

National English Heritage Pioneer Award Winner This trophy was presented to Didsbury Civic Society in 2014 at a National Ceremony in London by English Heritage as recognition of its involvement in Heritage Open Days since 1993.
