TRAVEL TO COLLEGE 2020/2021

QMC has a Green Travel Plan which commits us to cutting down car use to the site as much as possible - both for the benefit of the neighbourhood and to reduce the College’s impact on the wider environment.

When thinking about travel to College, look for the most environmentally friendly form of transport:

• Consider walking or cycling to College if you live within . These methods of travel are cheap, keep you fit and are good for the environment. There are many safe walking routes to College and a network of safe cycle routes. Ample covered cycle parking is available at the College. There are also showers available for use and lockers in which you can store equipment.

• Take public transport. College buses or Stagecoach services are available on most routes to College. It takes approximately 20 minutes to walk from the bus or train stations.

• If you are being given a lift to College you must use the turning circle and drop off point at the far end of Road. DO NOT DRIVE ON TO THE COLLEGE SITE. Please be considerate to our neighbours and DO NOT park in neighbouring streets or block driveways.

• Parking spaces on the site are very limited and priority is given to students who have completed at least one full year at the College and meet the set criteria. Be aware that passing your driving test will not give you the automatic right to park at College. The issue of a permit does not guarantee the availability of a parking space.

If you wish to apply for a parking permit to access the site by car an application form is available from the Help Desk when you join. Each application will be considered on its merits and special cases will be viewed sympathetically. Parking costs £120 for the whole academic year, £80 from the Spring Term onwards and £40 for the Summer Term. COLLEGE BUS SERVICES – ONLY £475 for an Annual Pass

For students who live in the Andover, Burghfield, Fleet/Yateley/Hartley Wintney, Hook/Odiham/Warnborough, Newbury/Headley/, or Whitchurch/Overton areas the College organises private coach transport. We also have a new service direct to College for 2020/21 running from , and .

We recognise that transport represents a significant cost to families. We offer an annual pass for 2020/21 for £475. As the services are contracted annually, tickets are only issued on an annual basis and payments are not refundable. To help spread the cost we are able to accept an initial payment of £275 at enrolment, with the remaining two payments of £100 by direct debit on 1 October and 1 November 2020 inclusive. This facility is only available for the College buses, not for Stagecoach buses.

College bus places are awarded on a first-come first-served basis. Please remember that you commit to one full year and payments are NOT refundable for part use of a College bus pass. These services are faster and more direct than the scheduled services. They deliver you directly onto the College site, but they only run once a day each way in term time. Your timetabled taught lessons may start and finish later/earlier than the bus schedule. This trapped time represents valuable opportunities for personal study, homework, etc. Our buses are not used by members of the general public. The passes cannot be used on Stagecoach services. If you lose your College bus pass it will cost £10 for a replacement.

How to Apply for a College Bus Pass To apply please complete the attached application form and ensure you have your photograph taken as part of the enrolment process. Cheques (made payable to ‘Queen Mary’s College’, with the student’s name and address printed on the reverse) can be sent in with your application form, or brought with you when you come to the College to enrol. You can also pay by credit/debit card (not AmEx or Solo) at enrolment. Part of the payment can be made by DDI for College buses only – see application form. For further information please contact the Help Desk on 01256 417500.

STAGECOACH BUS SERVICES To use scheduled Stagecoach bus services to and from College you will need to purchase a Zone 1 (local/inner Basingstoke) or Zone 2 (for those living outside Basingstoke) ticket. You must apply for the zone appropriate to your address and this will be checked. The Stagecoach bus pass has the advantage that it can also be used in the evenings, at weekends and during holidays, without additional payments, for travel within your area. You must carry photo ID in support of your bus pass. Rates for 2020/21 are yet to be confirmed. 2019 prices were: 2019/2020 Zone 1 Zone 2 Autumn term £167 £280 Includes Christmas holiday Spring term £167 £280 Includes Easter holiday Summer term £105 £200 Excludes summer holiday; ticket expires at end of term Annual £413 £670 Includes all holidays; ticket expires 31 Aug

• Student rate tickets will be available to any full time student aged 16+. • In planning which bus pass is most appropriate, bear in mind that neither Stagecoach nor QMC will make refunds on partially used bus passes. Should you lose your Stagecoach bus pass, it will cost £25 for a replacement, which can be purchased from Stagecoach. • It is not possible to pay QMC for a Stagecoach Bus Pass by direct debit. The direct debit form in this booklet is for the College bus service only. • If you live within the Basingstoke town area and wish to purchase a weekly or monthly bus pass you can do so by contacting Stagecoach directly.
