PAGE THE STAR 6 ARTS MAY 11- MAY 17, 2010 EVERYBODY HATES TONY ROTHTANA OUCH Online Editor "Iron Man 2" isn't about saving the world, or sav ing the people Tony Stark loves. The film is about the duplication of the technology found in the Iron Man suit. It's a film about gadgets and not about the human condition. This ·is perfectly fine since "Iron Man 2" can be considered an action film. But aside from a race to assemble high tech gear, there isn't much happening in "Iron Man 2." For a film fascinated by gadgets and high tech equipment, the film's pacing fails to deliver. It's slow like a drama but has none of the depth. The pace is absurdly disrupted by too many characters speaking too many lines at too slow a pace. The terrific action sequences are too far spread out to keep the pacing exhilarating. Robert Downey Jr. returns as Tony Stark. Tony •stark came out to the world as Iron Man at the end of the previous picture. Why wouldn't he? Being a hero with vast media attention is a modern allure. For an egomaniac such as Tony Stark, confessing to the world of his dual identity is simply stroking his ego. His cocksure manner has him gleefully running about the entire film. He is funny and flirtatious. But he seems to have digressed a little from his growth from the original "Iron Man'' picture. Stark's charis ma doesn't win over any other characters in the film. A lot of people dislike Stark. Don Cheadle has replaced Terrance Howard as James Rhodes. "Rho dey" doesn't get increased screen time over his origi nal "Iron Man" incarnation. Iron Man As Cyborg: Between Masculinities by Evdokia Stefanopoulou, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece

Iron Man as Cyborg: Between Masculinities By Evdokia Stefanopoulou, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece Abstract Since the turn of the millennium there has been a mass proliferation of superhero movies. From the appearance of the fist Spider-Man film in 2002 since the latest installment in the Ca ptain America series (2016), superhero movies have a tremendous popular and economic success. These popular texts have also a massive cultural impact by articulating their representations and ideologies in a global audience consisting of different national, racial, class and gender identities. The gender issues in superhero movies are often accompanied by the common observation that the great majority of superheroes are men and the rare presence of women is marked by their placement in a supporting role, thus reproducing a patriarchal ideology. Although this phenomenon can indeed be characterized as an excessive demonstration of masculine power and superheroes can be seen as mythical figures of a technological patriarchy, I would also suggest a different approach, an antithetical reading. This approach examines the overstated “technological sublime in human form” (Wasielewski 66) as a sort of divergent embodiment of subjectivity, one that contains the notion of the cyborg as described by Donna Harraway, one containing its own blurring of the ontological boundaries (161), therefore projecting its own existence as a social construction. Deploying this approach, I would examine the gender representations in the Iron Man trilogy (2008, 2010, 2013) not as demonstration of patriarchal power, but as masculinity in crisis, a masculinity undermined by its excessive technological look and its status as a constructed fabrication.

    Iron Man 3 Notes

ADVANCE rom Marvel Studios comes “Iron Man 3,” which continues the epic, big-screen adventures of the world’s favorite billionaire-inventor-Super Hero, Tony Stark aka FIron Man. Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968, “Iron Man 3” returns Robert Downey Jr. (“Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” “Tropic Thunder”) as Tony Stark, the iconic Super Hero, along with Gwyneth Paltrow (“Thanks for Sharing,” “Contagion”) as Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle (“Flight,” “Hotel Rwanda”) as James “Rhodey” Rhodes, Guy Pearce (“The Hurt Locker,” “Memento”) as Aldrich Killian, Rebecca Hall (“The Prestige,” “The Town,”) as Maya Hansen, Jon Favreau ( “Identity Thief,” “People Like Us”) as Happy Hogan and Ben Kingsley (“Schindler’s List,” “Gandhi,”) as The Mandarin.

Tsang Chung Hin (4D) A film review: Iron Man 3 Genre(s): Science Fiction, Action Running time: 130 minutes Director: Shane Black Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow Tony Stark recalls a New Year’s Eve party in 1999 where he meets scientist Maya Hansen, the inventor of Extremis. They undergo an experimental regenerative treatment which allows crippling injuries to recover. The disabled scientist Aldrich Killian offers them a place in his company to do the experiment. But Stark rejects the offer and humiliates Killian. Six months after the Battle of New Year, Stark experiences the alien invasion. He has built several dozen Iron Man suits. He has an argument with his girlfriend, Pepper Potts. Meanwhile, a terrorist has left the intelligence agencies. His security guard Happy Hogan is badly injured in an attack. He survives that attack but the world believes he has died. Then he starts his revenge and saves his girlfriend. This movie is one of the Marvel movies. This may be the last series of Iron Man. Iron Man 3 is more exciting than Iron Man 1 and 2. The story plot and the fighting scenes are good. The iron man suit is so real. Robert Downey Jr. acting as Tony Stark is especially good. He actually acts what Tony Stark should feel. His jokes make the film not so boring. That’s why I love him and his acting so much. Though this may be the last series of Iron Man, I hope to see more Iron Man films starring Robert Downey Jr.

The public acceptance begs the question as to whether or not there is something special about this group of superhero films compared to others. After further analysis, it seems that a majority of these films draw the audience in through a specific combination of sight and sound. While screen writers follow the five traditional segments of plot: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution, it is the moments between these segments of plot that draw the audiences attention. Composers have identified these transition zones and use music in various ways to provide critical information about character development, conflict, and resolution. Through the analysis of four Marvel films: Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Iron Man, and Iron Man 2, I aim to evaluate the success at which these composers guide the audience through each transition zone into new segments of plot. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF FIGURES..................................................................................................... iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS...................................................................................... v Introduction ............................................................................................................
