1 | On the Go | benning.armymwr.com 2 | On the Go | benning.armymwr.com 3 | On the Go | benning.armymwr.com 4 | On the Go | benning.armymwr.com Come celebrate the end of summer and jump start the school year right by bringing the whole family to MWR’s Annual “Gear Up 4 School” event, 8am-1pm July 28 at the Youth Services Campus (at intersection of Baltzell and McIver streets) on Main Post. This family fun event will consist of fun activities for children and youth, free health screenings, educational activities, refreshments, and information tables for available after school programs and community resources accessible on Fort Benning. Although there will be exciting activities going on throughout the morning, the highlight of the event is the distribution of school supplies. Our objective is for every child to have the best learning opportunity possible, starting with making sure they have the necessary tools they need to be successful in the classroom.

Backpacks are limited and will be distributed on a first come, first served basis, for students in Pre-K through High School; no registration is required to attend. This free event is exclusively for Active Duty and their families, and each student must be present to receive a free backpack filled with school supplies. Parent/Guardian must accompany children, and yes, the student to receive backpacks must accompany parents. Parents must have military ID and children 10 and older must present their ID.

Please keep in mind this is an outdoor event, so prepare for incredibly hot and humid weather. We recommend to bring sun block, water and umbrellas for your safety and comfort. For more information, please visit benning.armymwr.com.

5 | On the Go | benning.armymwr.com LETTER FROM DIRECTOR

As you’re making plans for vacation and back-to-school shopping, the team here at MWR is way out in front making plans for next year, for 2018, the 100th anniversary of the start of Fort Benning. We have great plans for the Centennial Celebration, which include a black tie soiree to ring in the New Year. We’re calling it the Fort Benning’ Centennial New Year’s Eve Gala and it will be a wedding reception, of sorts. Let me explain the history behind it. Fort Benning started as Camp Benning in 1918, after a protracted effort on the part of local leaders to bring a military camp to Columbus. From October of 1918 until the summer of 1919, the camp was located off Macon Road, until the land we call Riverside and surrounding communities was purchased for the Infantry School. Growth and construction progressed slowly until Benning Road was completed in 1925, making travel between the two communities much faster and safer. Prior to the construction of a paved road, the path between Columbus and Fort Benning was rugged and dangerous, and drivers moved at a snail’s pace they hoped to reach their destination with four tires and two fenders. The road was likened to a washboard if that tells you anything. AL GELINEAU Director of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation According to news accounts of the day, “the long awaited, much anticipated completion of Benning Boulevard was cause for celebration!” Members of the communities gathered at the Springer Opera House in Columbus to celebrate the union with a marriage ceremony. Once the knot was tied, the officiant intoned, “What the paved road has joined together, let no man put asunder.” And that was that. It’s high time we celebrate the union with a reception worthy of the relationship. I hope you’ll join us for the Centennial New Year’s Eve Gala, from 7:30 pm December 31 to 1:30 am January 1, 2018, at the Benning Club. We have a limited number of tickets you’ll find available at benning.armymwr.com. Of course, this event is just one of many being planned on post and off to celebrate the centennial and the partnership between Fort Benning and Columbus. We’ll share information as it becomes available here, on our website, our digital signs, our Facebook page and via email. I strongly encourage you to register for our weekly email updates on our homepage at benning.armymwr.com. Let me get back to planning while you enjoy this edition of On the Go. From the family here at MWR to your family, thank you for allowing us to serve you for the better part of 100 years. Here’s to the next 100!

BENNING CLUB

OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW! The legacy of the Benning Club is one of history and hospitality. It was originally the Fort Benning Officers’ Club when it was founded in 1919. When the current facility opened in Building 128 on Morrison Avenue in 1934, it was considered one of the most modern clubs in the Southeast, with an expansive gallery, separate lounges for men and women, a barber and a beauty shop, billiards room, gymnasium, kitchen and grill, guest quarters on the mezzanine level, servants’ quarters onsite for round-the-clock service, a paging system and an in-house telephone system so guests could order from the grill anywhere in the club. The club’s first pool and formal gardens were added in 1937, and the Supper Club was added in 1960. The function was similar to that of the Officer’s Club, but the Mid-Century Modern architectural style gave a more energetic atmosphere, making the old Officer’s Club stodgy by comparison. The angled windows and ceiling, blank walls, staggered wall piercings are details commonly found in this architectural style.

The “O Club” is now the Benning Club, and membership is no longer exclusive. If you’re a member of the Fort Benning community, you’re a member of the club! And today, with meeting space for events that are intimate or extravagant, with rooms suitable for groups of 40 to 400, the club remains the center of social events on Fort Benning. You may choose to rent one of our rooms or galleries – or all of our rooms and galleries – for your next special event, or you may attend one of many events we host at the club every year, including holiday brunches, Monte Carlo Night, concerts and comedy night, receptions and so much more.

In March 2017, MWR opened to the doors to the renovated and redesigned Supper Club. With a new larger floorplan, new carpet, audio visual and air conditioning system, the Supper Club is perfect for large events making it ideal for receptions, balls and formal dinners. As the largest formal venue on Fort Benning, the Supper Club has the ability to MONTE CARLO NIGHT seat 500-700 guests depending on the tables used; 500 capacity with round tables and 700 capacity with rectangular tables. Join us for an evening of casino games, food, prizes, silent and live auction at 6pm August 25 ! For $30 in advance and $35 at the door, guests will enjoy a buffet (Asian, Italian, and Surf & Turf!) and $10K in chips. Additional chips will be available for purchase until 8pm. This event includes a VIP Texas Hold’em Poker tournament for $20. Games include Craps, Roulette, Black Jack, Slots and Poker. To reserve child care by August 18, call 706-545-2079. Purchase tickets at benning.armymwr.com July 17 – August 23.

Join us for the Centennial New Year’s Eve Gala, 7:30pm December SAVE 31 to 1:30am January 1! This black tie evening will celebrate the completion of Benning Boulevard in 1925 which “united” Fort THE Benning with Columbus. DATE For more details and tickets, visit benning.armymwr.com.
