All rights reserved. Animal Friend Appliqués Appliqué Instructions Pre-Cut Appliqué Instructions 1. Print out the necessary pages from the PDF of the appliquè pattern(s). 2. Mark the right side of the pattern pieces so you’ll know which direction to lay the pattern on the fabric. 3. Lightly spray the wrong side of the pattern pieces with temporary adhesive spray and allow it to set for a few minutes. 4. Place the pattern pieces on the right side of the fabric and carefully cut them out. PHOTO 1 5. Sew the placement stitch on your hooped fabric. PHOTO 2 6. With the paper still stuck to the right side of the appliqué fabric, spray the wrong side of the fabric with temporary spray adhesive. 7. Place the fabric inside the placement stitch, so that it completely covers the placement stitch and then remove the paper pattern. PHOTO 3 8. Sew the tackdown. PHOTO 4 9. Sew the remainder of the design and repeat for any remaining pieces. PHOTO 5 NOTE: The patterns are sized for the designs as they were made. If you resize the design, you will need to resize the pattern the same amount. You can print out the pattern at the normal size then copy it on a copy machine at the changed size. For example, resize the designs to 80%, resize the printed pattern to 80%.

TIP: When Printing the patterns, make sure that the “Fit to page” option is UNCHECKED in the Print Dialog Box. If this option is checked the printed patterns will not be actual size. 1 2 3

Animal Friend Appliqués Mini BackPack For Child Instructions Supplies • Outer Fabric - ⅔ yard (44" wide) • Inner (lining) Fabric - ⅔ yard (44" wide) • Interfacing - 1 ¼ yard (22" wide) • 14" Zipper • 4 1" D-Rings • Felt Scrap - 6" x 8" • Appliqué Fabric - 6" x 6" • OESD HeavyWeight Tear Away Stabilizer • ½" Double Fold Bias Binding (can be made from lining fabric) - 2 ½ yard

Construction • Print pattern pieces and assemble. Cut main fabric and interfacing according to the pattern. Prepare lining pieces by fusing interfacing on the back of each piece according to manufacturer’s instructions.

• For all color changes, use the Isacord thread indicated by the thread chart in the top and OESD pre-wound bobbin thread.

• Hoop the pocket piece with OESD heavy tear away stabilizer. PHOTO 1

• Load the hoop in the machine and begin stitching the first color change, Placement Stitch. PHOTO 2 Photo 1 Photo 2

• Remove the hoop from the machine. Lightly spray a piece of appliqué fabric with temporary spray adhesive and place over the placement line. Replace the hoop and stitch the next color change, Cut Line and Tackdown. Note the double line, which allows you to trim very close to the cut line.

• Remove the hoop from the machine. Carefully trim to the cut line using OESD curved embroidery scissors around the appliqué. PHOTO 3

• Replace the hoop and stitch the remaining color changes. PHOTO 4 Photo 3 Photo 4 Photo 5 • Remove the hoop from the machine. Trim the jump stitches prior to unhooping the stabilizer. Gently tear away the stabilizer close to the design. Cut the pocket to size according to pattern piece.

• With the inner pocket pieces right sides together, sew ¼" around the edge leaving a 2 - 3" opening for turning to the inner pocket. • Pin the inner pocket piece 2" from the top of the lining back piece. Stitching ¼" from the edge of the inner pocket, attach the pocket to the back lining piece. PHOTO 7

• Using a long straight basting stitch, and a ¼" seam allowance, attach the outer pocket to the front Photo 8 Photo 9 outer piece. PHOTO 8

• Mark the center of the bottom outer gusset on each edge. Using a small amount of temporary spray adhesive, place the reinforcement felt piece on the center of the gusset bottom. Stitch the bottom of the gusset with a crosshatch quilting design. PHOTO 9

• Press each clip piece in half. Open up and press each side to the center. Fold and press in half again. Topstitch close to each edge. Slide the strap into two clips and fold over. Sew a reinforcing stitch along the edge near to the clip as well as at the opposite end, securing the opening. Fold and press in half again. Topstitch close to each edge, stopping ½" from the folded edge. PHOTOS 14 & 15

• Place the inner and outer fabric long strap pieces Photo 14 Photo 17 right sides together. Stitch each long side of the long strap pieces, forming a tube. Turn the tube right side out. Tuck in a ½" hem on one side of each strap and press. PHOTOS 16 & 17

• Insert clip piece in each strap piece through the folded edge. Sew a Photo 18 Photo 19 reinforcing stitch along the edge. PHOTOS 18 & 19 Photo 20 • Press the hanging tab piece in half. Open up and press Photo 21 each side to the center. Fold and press in half again. Topstitch close to each edge. Stitch ¼" along the back outer piece edge and trim strap pieces to seam allowance. PHOTOS 22 & 23

• Pin the short strap pieces 2" inches in from either edge of the back outer piece. Stitch ¼" along the back outer piece edge. Pin Photo 22 Photo 23 the straps to the back outer piece to keep them out of the seam allowance for assembly. PHOTOS 24 & 25

• Place one of the outer zipper gusset pieces face up. Lay the zipper pull down on top of the outer zipper gusset piece. Lay the inner gusset piece face down on the outer gusset piece and pin, lining up the upper edge and sides. Using a zipper foot, stitch along the Photo 24 Photo 25 edge. Open the inner and outer pieces and press away from the zipper. Topstitch along the edge. PHOTOS 26 & 27 Photo 27 Photo 28 • Place the other outer zipper gusset piece face up. Lay the sewn zipper piece, pull down, on top of the outer zipper gusset piece. Photo 26 Lay the inner gusset piece face down on the outer gusset piece and pin, lining up the upper edge and sides. Using a zipper foot, stitch along the edge. Open the inner and outer pieces and press away from the zipper. Topstitch along the edge. PHOTOS 28 & 29 Photo 29 Photo 30 • Sandwich the zipper gusset between the bottom gusset pieces, matching the fabric and right sides together. Stitch ¼" along the edge, stopping and backstitching ¼" away from each end. PHOTO 30

• Open the inner and outer bottom gusset pieces and pull around to the opposite end of the zipper gusset and stitch ¼" along the edge creating a loop, stopping and backstitching ¼" away from each end. PHOTO 31
