Welcome to the November/December 2020 Edition of the Atlas All Scales Monthly Catalog (ASMC). This catalog is the core of our guaranteed pre-order system. Before Atlas gives suppliers the green light for final production, Atlas announces to it’s authorized dealers, distributors and e-subscribers that we are ready to take guaranteed pre-orders. This notification comes in the form of regular ASMC’s that focus on the current months planned production announcements and allows customers an opportunity to place guaranteed pre-orders if submitted to Atlas by a given date. Fulfillment after this date is not guaranteed, but Atlas will attempt to fill orders if additional quantities are available. In other cases, Atlas may speculate on order quantities in order to bring products to market more quickly. We will do our best to meet demand, however, in these instances allocations to dealers, distributors and their customers may be necessary.

The November/December ASMC features three new Master Line models-the N Scale S-4, and the HO Scale 5250 Covered Hopper, and the HO Scale 10-1-2 Sleepers. HO modelers will also be glad to find the S-4 locomotive with new tooled cab versions. For O Scale, we’re reintroducing the ever popular 40’ Rebuilt Wood Reefers and the Trainman Bulkhead Flat Cars. You’ll find all these new, tried and true models, and much more inside including; new rolling stock trucks, layout accessories, and the listing of the latest locomotive, rolling stock and track arrivals.

The original design dates back to the early Fifties, when it was offered in single- and double compartment versions. The name lends itself to the “action” created by an air-permeable fabric lining in the bottom of the compartment. Unloading the car involves pumping air under the lining fluidizing the commodity which in turn is drawn out of the compartment by pneumatic or other means. This type of car was primarily used for sugar, flour, and starch (and sometime certain types of plastics).

The subject of Atlas’ model is one of the double compartment cars, the 4180 cubic-foot design. It was introduced in 1962 and through a number of design changes continued in production until 1980 when the taller 4566 cubic-foot design supplanted the 4180. During that time a little over 5,000 were built.

Alco introduced the S-4 in 1950. The S-4 like the earlier S-2 was a 1000 horsepower switcher. Some 636 S-4’s were built for North American railroads. The primary quick spotting difference between the S-1/S-2 and the S-3/S-4 can be seen in the trucks. The S-1/S-2 has Blunt trucks, while the S-3/S-4 has AAR-style trucks. ACF introduced the 5250 cubic foot size covered hopper in 1964, and has since built nearly 20,000 cars. Most of the cars were equipped with pneumatic outlets and eight 20” round hatches for use in transporting plastic pellets. In addition to the plastics cars, a number have been built or converted with gravity outlets and elongated hatches for grain type products. As with most things with long production spans, the design has evolved with changes in the physical features of the body and fixtures. The Atlas model features three unique body style variations to represent those changes from the 1960s into the 21st Century.

The pictured GATX (General American) ACF 5250 was caught by Dave Casdorph in Southern California in the late 2000s. The car itself was built at ACF’s Milton Plant in 1980. It has a late production body style with both Pull tab holes and welded Pull tabs added to the body. This unique Pull tabs configuration will be recreated on the model as well. The Atlas Master Plus ACF 5250 model features many road specific features, such as three unique body variations spanning productions from 1968 to the late 1990s.

Between 1911 and 1927, Pullman built over 600 sleeper cars in the 10-1-2 (10 section, 1 drawing room, 2 compartment) configuration, making this the largest class of cars after the 12-1 sleeper. Blending Pullman’s focus on the economy of sectional berths with the availability of private rooms, this car was a staple in both pool and dedicated name train service for most of the major roads, and was a favorite of economy-minded “sunbird” travelers between the Northeast and Florida. The cars of plan 3585, produced between 1923 and 1927, collectively became known as the “Lake” series of cars, as all bore names of lakes in the United States, with the exception of the 12 Scottish-tinged “Loch” cars produced for the B&O. During their lifetimes, a number of these cars were converted into Tourist class cars, or were sold to Mexican railways in the 1960s. Several examples still survive in museums today, such as the Lake Ainslie (alphabetically the first of the series), which is currently undergoing restoration at the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum in Calera, Alabama.
