Multifaith Information Manual 6Th Edition an Authoritative Guide to Religious Rights and Accommodations MULTIFAITH INFORMATION MANUAL 6TH EDITION AN AUTHORITATIVE GUIDE TO RELIGIOUS RIGHTS AND ACCOMMODATIONS CANADIAN MULTIFAITH FEDERATION, ToRoNTO (Formerly Ontario Multifaith Council, OMC) www.cmfsrc.ca CHURCH OF SCiENTOLOGY INTROOUCflON Origins (Founder) L. Ron llubbard Nature of Religion Scientology considers man to be a spiritual being. with more to him than flesh and blood. Scientology believes man to be basically good. not evil. It is man's experiences that have led him to commit evil deeds. not his nature. Scientology believes that man advances to the degree he preserves his spiritual integrity and values, and remains honest and decent. Indeed, he deteriorates to the degree he abandons these qualities. But because man is basically good he is capable of spiritual betterment, and it is the goal of Scientology to bring him to the point where he is capable of sorting out the factors in his own life and solving his own problems. Life has tended to force the individual into certain values. The stresses of existence have tended to fiXate his attention to the point where his awareness of himself and his environment has been greatly diminished. Attendant to this lowered spiritual awareness are problems. difficulties with others, illness and unhappiness. The goal of Scientology is to reverse this diminishing awareness and, in that sense, wake the individual up. As one becomes more and more alert, his abilities increase and he is capable of greater understanding and thus better able to handle his life. SCRIPTURES 170 Canadian Multifaith Federation -- Multifaith Information Manual Scientology contains solutions to the problems of living. Its end result is increased awareness and spiritual freedom for the individual and rehabilitation of his basic decency, power and ability. The source and Founder of the Scientology religion is L. Ron Hubbard, who devoted his life to finding answers to questions that have troubled mankind for millennia. The first widely released results of Mr. Hubbard's researches did not lie in Scientology, however, but in another field of endeavor, "Dianetics". The word "Dianetics" comes from the Greek words dia, meaning "through" and "nous", meaning "soul" and is defined as what the soul is doing to the body. Dianetics constituted L. Ron Hubbard's first breakthrough, and it was his initial discoveries in this area which led to further reseaches and the exact isolation of the source of life itself. Man does not have a spirit. He is a spirit. He has a mind and he has a body. Dianetics thus helps provide relief from unwanted sensations and emotions, accidents and psychosomatic illnesses (ailments caused or aggravated by mental stress). The word Scientology is taken from the Latin scio, which means "knowing in the fullest sense of the word" and the Greek word logos, meaning, "study of'. It literally means "knowing how to know". Scientology itself is defined as, "The study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, universes and other life." Scientology addresses the spiritual being. It directly raises his awareness and ability and by so doing, he also becomes increasingly able to overcome the negative factors that impair him. It is significant to note that Scientology is based wholly upon the research, writings and recorded lectures of Mr. Hubbard, collectively constituting the Scripture of the religion. This Scripture is the sole source of all the doctrines, tenets, philosophy, and practices of Scientology. Unlike older religions, Scientology is fortunate to have been born in a period when technology allowed its Founder's teachings to be preserved and hence practiced, without alteration or loss. BASIC BELIEFS The spiritual freedom promised in Scientology can be attained only ifthe path developed by Mr. Hubbard is followed without deviation. It is delineated in a series of steps of increasing levels of spiritual enlightenment as described in the Scientology Classification, Gradation and Awareness Chart, also known as "The Bridge to Total Freedom" or "The Bridge". Ultimate salvation is dependent on increasing one's awareness and understanding of his true spiritual identity. Thus, Scientology is composed in equal parts of"training" and "auditing", (pastoral counselling). As the religion not only expands knowledge of all aspects of life but also details how and why man lost his spirituality and how to avoid this from recurring, it is vital for a Scientologist to study the principles contained in the works of Mr. Hubbard. This is training, and here one obtains the wisdom to understand who he is, what he is, where he comes from and his relationship to the universe. The application of that wisdom towards personal spiritual improvement comes through spiritual counselling --- auditing. Auditing is ministered by an auditor, a minister of the Church of Scientology. An auditor is defined as "one who listens", ta:ken from audire which means "to hear or listen". Personal Integrity WHAT IS TRUE FOR YOU is what you have observed yourself And when you lose that you have lost everything. 171 Canadian Multifaith Federation --Multifaith Information Manual What is personal integrity? Personal integrity is knowing what you know - What you know is what you know -- And to have the courage to know and say what you have observed. And that is integrity And there is no other integrity. Of course we can talk about honor, truth, all these things, These esoteric terms. But I think they'd all be covered very well If what we really observed was what we observed, That we took care to observe what we were observing, That we always observed to observe. And not necessarily maintaining a skeptical attitude, A critical attitude, or an open mind. But certainly maintaining sufficient personal integrity And sufficient personal belief and confidence in self And courage that we can observe what we observe And say what we have observed. Nothing in Dianetics and Scientology is true for you Unless you have observed it And it is true according to your observation That is all. L. Ron Hubbard FOUNDER MODE OF WORSHIP Scientologists study the scriptures and receive pastoral counselling at a Church of Scientology during the day or evening or on the weekends at their own pace. Weekly Sunday services are also held at the Church, open to all. The stress is on application of what they have studied or discovered about their own spiritual nature to improve their own life and the lives of others. STRUCTURE The organizational structure of Scientology churches is hierarchical, and arranged in a pattern which matches the Classification, Gradation and Awareness Chart of Scientology. In other words, at the lower level of this hierarchy, individual Church organizations minister beginning level auditing and training; and, at the upper level, Church organizations minister the highest levels of auditing and training. It is a logical sequence of organization, one that reflects the spiritual progress of Scientology parishioners up the Bridge. This ecclesiastical hierarchy is paralleled by a corporate structure. Each church corporation is organized on a nonprofit basis with its own Board of Directors and executives responsible for its activities. These churches together form the stable building blocks of an international network that spans the globe. An integral part of this international structure are Church corporations which house the staff who form international management. These corporations are the International Hubbard Ecclesiastical League of Pastors, the mother Church for all Scientology volunteer ministers and field auditors; Scientology Missions International, which serves as the mother Church for all Scientology missions; and above them 172 Canadian Multifaith Federation -- Multifaith Information Manual all, Church of Scientology International, which serves as the mother church for the Scientology religion. Below international management is a network of continental or zonal management organizations, each of which provides ecclesiastical support to individual churches within its sphere of influence. Religious Technology Center (RTC), established in 1982, has the purpose to protect the public from misapplication of the technology and to see that the religious technologies of Dianetics and Scientology remain in the proper hands and are properly administered. It is RTC that grants the Church of Scientology International, the mother church of the Scientology religion, the right to use the trademarks and to license their use to all other Scientology churches. With all Scientology churches bound to minister Dianetics and Scientology technologies in full compliance with their trademark licences, the entire hierarchy up to the Church of Scientology International is self-correcting and ensures pure and orthodox Scientology. RTC investigates any departures from that standard administration and ensures orthodoxy is restored. DIVISIONS/DENOMINATIONS: Not applicable RITUALS Traditionally an ordained Scientology minister conducts a weekly Sunday service for all church members to attend, performs weddings and naming ceremonies for the newborn and marks the passing of fellows with funeral rites. BOOK 4.book Page 1 Monday, October 1, 2001 4:06 PM SCIENTOLOGY Making the World a Better Place Founded and developed by L. Ron Hubbard, Scientology is an applied religious philosophy which offers an exact route through which anyone can regain the truth and simplicity of his spiritual self. Scientology consists of specific axioms that define the underlying causes and principles of existence and a vast area of observations in the humanities, a philosophic body that literally applies to the entirety of life. This broad body of knowledge resulted in two applications of the subject: first, a technology for man to increase his spiritual awareness and attain the freedom sought by many great philosophic teachings; and, second, a great number of fundamental principles men can use to improve their lives. In fact, in this second application, Scientology offers nothing less than practical methods to better every aspect of our existence—means to create new ways of life. And from this comes the subject matter you are about to read. Compiled from the writings of L. Ron Hubbard, the data presented here is but one of the tools which can be found in The Scientology Handbook. A comprehensive guide, the handbook contains numerous applications of Scientology which can be used to improve many other areas of life. In this booklet, the editors have augmented the data with a short introduction, practical exercises and examples of successful application. Courses to increase your understanding and further materials to broaden your knowledge are available at your nearest Scientology church or mission, listed at the back of this booklet.

  • Danish Dianetics: Scholarship in the Church of Scientology in Scandinavia
chapter 5 Danish Dianetics: Scholarship in the Church of Scientology in Scandinavia Kjersti Hellesøy and James R. Lewis L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, began establishing the Church of Scientology (CoS) outside of the United States when he established a center in Dublin in 1956. He later moved his headquarters to Saint Hill near East Grinstead, Sussex, in England in 1959. Though French Scientologists had estab- lished an early organization in Paris during the same year, the church that was opened in Copenhagen in June of 1968 became the center of Scientology activ- ities in continental Europe. Scientology was introduced into Sweden as well in 1968. This was well before “New Religious Movements” became established as a distinct field of study. As a consequence, it would be more than a dozen years before Scandinavian academicians turned their attention to CoS. When they did, it was Danish researchers who took the lead, in part because of the prox- imity of the major Scientology center to the University of Copenhagen in the country’s capital. In this chapter, we will survey the scholarship that has been produced on Scientology in Scandinavia, emphasizing Danish contributions. Denmark Merethe Sundby-Sørensen The study of Scientology in Denmark started after the Church asked Arild Hvidtfeldt, then Professor of Sociology of Religion at the University of Copenhagen, to make a statement for one of their court cases. Hvidtfeldt sub- sequently introduced another sociologist of religion at Copenhagen, Merethe Sundby-Sørensen, to Scientology. Sundby-Sørensen followed up by conducting two surveys of Danish Scientologists in 1982 and 1992, and was preparing a third when she died from a heart attack in 1997.1 Peter B.

France Page 1 of 8 France International Religious Freedom Report 2006 Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor The constitution provides for freedom of religion, and the Government generally respected this right in practice; however, some religious groups remain concerned about legislation passed in 2001 and 2004, which provided for the dissolution of groups under certain circumstances and banned the wearing of conspicuous religious symbols by public school employees and students. A 1905 law on the separation of religion and state prohibits discrimination on the basis of faith. Government policy continued to contribute to the generally free practice of religion. A law prohibiting the wearing of conspicuous religious symbols in public schools by employees and students entered into force in September 2004. Despite significant efforts by the Government to combat anti-Semitism and an overall decline in the number of incidents, anti-Semitic attacks persisted. The Government has a stated policy of monitoring potentially "dangerous" cult activity through the Inter-ministerial Monitoring Mission against Sectarian Abuses (MIVILUDES). Some groups expressed concern that MIVILUDES publications contributed to public mistrust of minority religions, and that public statements from the new president indicated the organization would take a harder line against minority religions. The UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief issued a report indicating that the Government generally respected the right to freedom of religion or belief, but expressed concern about the application of the 1905 law, the treatment of cult groups and certain new religious movements, and the 2004 legislation regarding religious symbols in schools. The generally amicable relationship among religious groups in society contributed to freedom of religion.
