Also expressed as an event, 1 in 100 year event which has a 1% probability of occurring in any one year. Flood defence that is designed for an event, which has an annual probability of 1%. 1 in 100 year design In events more severe than this the defence would be expected to fail or to allow standard flooding. Layers of rock sufficiently porous to hold water and permeable enough to allow Aquifer water to flow through them in quantities that are suitable for water supply. The Environment Agency has defined ‘primary’ (previously major) and ‘secondary’ (previously minor) aquifers. Formations that permit water to move through them, but at much lower rates than Aquitard through the adjoining aquifers. Formations that may be sufficiently porous to hold water, but do not allow water to Aquicludes move through them. A high-level planning strategy through which the Environment Agency works with Catchment Flood their key decision makers within a river catchment to identify and agree policies to Management Plan secure the long-term sustainable management of flood risk. Culvert A channel or pipe that carries water below the level of the ground. Poorly sorted sediment showing great lateral and vertical variations in thickness, Diamicton composition and texture. All material of glacial origin found anywhere on land or at sea, including sediment Drift geology and large rocks (glacial erratic). Floodplain Area adjacent to river, coast or estuary that is naturally susceptible to flooding. Flood storage A temporary area that stores excess runoff or river flow often ponds or reservoirs. Fluvial flooding Flooding by a river or a watercourse. Freeboard Height of flood defence crest level (or building level) above designed water level Water that is in the ground, this is usually referring to water in the saturated zone Groundwater below the water table. Head deposit describes ground deposits at the very top of the geological Head Deposit succession , that could not be classified more accurately Inundation Flooding The core of the updated planning system (introduced by the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004). The LDF comprises the Local Development Local Development Documents, including the development plan documents that expand on policies and Framework (LDF) provide greater detail. The development plan includes a core strategy, site allocations and a proposals map. An element of development design which may be used to manage flood risk or avoid Mitigation measure an increase in flood risk elsewhere. Risk The probability or likelihood of an event occurring. Sewer flooding Flooding caused by a blockage or overflowing in a sewer or urban drainage system. Sustainable drainage Methods of management practices and control structures that are designed to drain system surface water in a more sustainable manner than some conventional techniques. Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Claylands Area profile: Supporting documents Introduction National Character Areas map As part of Natural England’s responsibilities as set out in the Natural Environment White Paper,1 Biodiversity 20202 and the European Landscape Convention,3 we are revising profiles for England’s 159 National Character Areas North (NCAs). These are areas that share similar landscape characteristics, and which East follow natural lines in the landscape rather than administrative boundaries, making them a good decision-making framework for the natural environment. Yorkshire & The North Humber NCA profiles are guidance documents which can help communities to inform West their decision-making about the places that they live in and care for. The information they contain will support the planning of conservation initiatives at a East landscape scale, inform the delivery of Nature Improvement Areas and encourage Midlands broader partnership working through Local Nature Partnerships. The profiles will West also help to inform choices about how land is managed and can change. During this planning process, the current state of the water environment and associated land is systematically analysed and compared with appropriate standards. Where these standards are not being met or are likely to be affected in the future, the shortfalls, together with options for action to resolve them, are presented as issues in a table at the end of this brochure. But too many of them are suffering from neglect, decay and pressure from development. Heritage at Risk is a national project to identify these endangered places and then help secure their future. In 2008 English Heritage published its first register of Heritage at Risk – a region-by-region list of all the Grade I and II* listed buildings (and Grade II listed buildings in London), structural scheduled monuments, registered battlefields and protected wreck sites in England known to be ‘at risk’.

Over that time, we have reduced the number of historic sites which have been at risk from destruction or demolition in many parts of the East of England region.The first category of assets which we focused on were Buildings at Risk. In our region, which has suffered the vicissitudes of industrial slumps and changing demographics alongside periods of rapid economic growth, this has led to a number of important buildings facing serious threats.
