Safety and Security Manager

The Aga Khan Museum (AKM) in Toronto, Canada offers visitors a window into worlds unknown or unfamiliar: the artistic, intellectual, and scientific heritage of Muslim civilizations across the centuries from the Iberian Peninsula to China. Its mission is to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of the contribution that Muslim civilizations have made to world heritage. Through education, research, and collaboration, the Museum will inform and inspire audiences from all cultures by presenting art created in the Muslim world throughout the past fourteen centuries, along with current paths of artistic practice and cultural development.

Purpose of Position

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Safety and Security Manager is directly responsible for the security strategy of the Wynford Drive Campus consisting of the Aga Khan Museum, the , the Aga Khan Park and the Central Parking Garage and for ensuring the safety of all staff, visitors and contractors. S/he is also responsible for managing the day-to-day security operations, implementing building/site security and security protection measures, developing policies and establishing security operating guidelines and procedures that protect against fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal activity.

Key Responsibilities

• Researching, developing/updating and recommending a security strategy for the Wynford Drive Campus. • Implementing the approved strategy and monitoring and enhancing the same on an on- going basis. • Planning, developing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating the overall Wynford Drive Campus Security Program, which includes security policies, service quality standards and standard operating procedures (SOPs), in accordance with the security policies and guidelines of the Aga Khan Development Network. • Developing and harnessing a strong relationship with law enforcement agencies that service the Wynford Drive Campus area. • Developing intelligence gathering mechanisms allowing for proactive planning for site security. • Updating and maintaining emergency response procedures and evacuation plans to be followed in emergency situations (security, fire, natural disasters, civil disruption and other man-made emergencies) for the protection of staff, volunteers, visitors, assets, information and facilities. • Ensuring that the appropriate level of training is provided to all security staff and relevant volunteers on dealing with disasters; fire and bomb procedures; use of technical equipment and routine security duties. Also ensuring that this knowledge is tested on a periodic basis. • Developing and offering training to all staff, volunteers and contractors on preventative safety practices. • Conducting ongoing assessments of security vulnerabilities, as well as threats and risks to the security of the facility, collections, works on loan, visitors and staff and taking appropriate corrective action including making changes to the Wynford Drive Campus Security Policy. Engaging external expertise as and when required.

• Ensuring that fire safety plans including building plans, the location of fire protection systems and equipment viz. valves, fire hose cabinets and fire extinguishers, are up to date. • Leading investigations related to security or criminal activities and determining whether or not an investigation should be referred to the police. • Answering alarms and investigating disturbances as required. • Writing reports of daily activities and irregularities, such as equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons, or unusual occurrences and taking action and/or recommending improvements as required. • Overseeing the operations of various security systems, equipment, and machinery on site to ensure compliance with overall facility security master plan and strategy. • Managing a security services contract and assisting with negotiating the same, as and when required to do so. • Consulting with and supporting managers and staff at all levels of the Wynford Drive Campus, regarding security requirements and problems. • Participating in the Health and Safety Committee of the Museum. • Coordinating with the Human Resources department and contracting companies for appropriate staffing levels. • Recruiting and assisting in the on-boarding exercise for all new security personnel and managing their performance. • Being responsible for staff scheduling to ensure 24/7 coverage, which would include: staff and volunteer training, employee vacations, overtime approval etc. • Being responsible for the financial management of the safety and security services including preparing and monitoring forecasts and budgets. • Representing the Wynford Drive Campus with the community and other museums, cultural centers etc. • Monitoring and staying current on the latest technical advances in security-related equipment as part of the role in assuring that the Wynford Drive Campus’ physical security infrastructure is effective and up to date. • Any other duties assigned by the line manager.

Qualifications & Experience

• Minimum 5 years’ progressive experience in law enforcement or security, or 10 years of an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience. • A sound working knowledge of current security best practices and legislation affecting the security role. • A sound working knowledge of the development and implementation of security master plans, procedures and processes. • Knowledge of crisis management practices and ability to take action towards safety in the event of an emergency. • Ability to work in a matrix organization that requires managing volunteers, staff and third- party security personnel. • Being open to new ideas requiring the ability to pivot the role and leading the security team in change management, • Excellent knowledge of electronic security systems. • Thorough knowledge of the provincial fire codes. • Knowledge of current security trends as well as threats and risks to public institutions.

• Ability to sensitively deal with staff and visitor complaints and concerns. • Proficiency in investigatory procedures. • Ability to respond to emergencies, both during regular and after hours, and take corrective action where necessary. • Leadership experience (minimum 5 years), including developing, coaching and mentoring teams and overseeing the work of contractors. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite software and general comfort with operating & mastering electronic tools & devices. • Proven experience working in a public setting. • Familiarity with public services practices. • Experience working for or providing Security Services to a museum, cultural institution, or similar entity. • Certified Protection Professional (CPP) designation from the American Society for Industrial Security or equivalent certification will be advantageous. • Ability to communicate with proficiency in both official languages, oral and written. • Sound judgement and decision-making skills, with a “hands on”, problem solving approach, ability to remain calm under pressure and take control of incidents. • Ability to conduct and/or support sensitive investigations involving staff, assets and/or proprietary information. • Excellent group and one-on-one communication, negotiation and presentation skills. • Excellent organization and time management skills; ability to multi-task. • Ability to work independently or collaboratively in a cross-functional and team-oriented environment. • Demonstrated leadership skills; the ability to coach and motivate others to results. • Strong analytical skills; ability to present a solid and well-rounded business case. • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to anticipate needs. • Flexible; ability to work under changing priorities and deadlines. • Superior interpersonal skills. • Ability to be confidential, use discretion, tact, initiative and sound judgment. • Strong commitment to institutional values and policies. • Expressed interest in the mandate of the Wynford Drive Campus.
