Rising to the Challenge 2019 Annual Report

PITTSBURGH, PA Dear Friends 2019 was a year brimming with important partnerships that allowed us to accomplish so much. The African Penguin on this year’s cover illustrates the spirit of the National . Our unceasing efforts, made possible by you and all those who support our mission, can lift a species from the threat of extinction to the expectation of a new future.

Our Tropical Rainforest habitat received the prestigious 2019 Exhibit Award for Innovation from the Association of and Aquariums, affirming the massive renovation’s intent to offer an unparalleled educational experience for guests and a healthy, vibrant world for the animals in our care. In the coming year, we will continue this momentum as we construct The Garden Room, a 9,000-square-foot space that will expand our capacity for The Garden Room groundbreaking (L to R: Keyva Clark, educational programming and offer a Tony Pitassi, Tom Wiley, Cheryl Tracy, Mayor Bill Peduto, unique venue for special events. We are indebted to the many donors who answered urgent calls for help, allowing us to rise to challenges. Your generosity enabled us to increase our educational outreach program to local schools; create individualized habitats for residents in our geriatric and special needs Teaching Hospital; conduct complex life-saving surgeries; and participate in emergency rescue efforts.

As you review this 2019 Annual Report, please realize that all support, big and small, makes our work possible. We are truly grateful for your support, and we invite you to join us in looking with excitement and hope into the next decade.

Sincerely,

Cheryl L. Tracy Executive Director

On the Cover Bette the African Penguin has risen above challenges to her health, bringing hope to her entire species, which is endangered. She has made a full recovery from a complex surgery to remove a mass entangled in her reproductive system, and has even passed an egg, affirming the procedure’s success. The Help Care for Bette: An Amazing Story campaign raised $10,000 thanks to your generosity and an anonymous donor’s $5,000 match. Because of donors like you, our expert medical team was able to concentrate on Bette, not the cost of the life-saving medical care she needed. Cover photo: Lindsey Shuey Blue-bellied Roller

Inspiring Transformative Educational Experiences

The National Aviary is a well-known cultural asset to families and schools in the region, introducing thousands of children to our immersive habitats and conservation messages each year. Unfortunately, there are many students who are not able to visit our facility because of cost or distance. That is why our educational outreach programming is essential to ensure these children have access to inspirational learning opportunities. SPOTLIGHT: Since 2017, our educational outreach engagements have increased 50 percent, reaching 152 schools within a 90-mile radius of the National Living Dinosaurs, Aviary in 2019 alone. Sustaining From Extinction to a Promising Tomorrow

This year, after decades of concerted effort by the National Aviary and other organizations participating in the Guam Rail’s ®, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) upgraded the species’ conservation status from Extinct in the Wild to Critically Endangered, marking just the second avian species in history to recover from what seemed an inevitable fate. Caring Groundbreaking Surgeries

In 2019, Dr. Pilar Fish and the highly skilled National Aviary veterinary staff rose to the challenge of three groundbreaking surgeries. A Blue- fronted Amazon Parrot suffered a foot laceration that could have resulted in amputation were it not for Dr. Fish’s prompt decision to perform the Aviary’s first skin graft — on an area smaller than a pencil eraser — with healthy skin from a featherless area on the bird’s chest.
