Teaching Field: Humanities Date: 11/16/2016 Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Faculty Qualifications for Hiring
The Humanities Instructional Council (IC) of the Maricopa Community College District (MCCCD) is firmly committed to maintaining high quality teaching standards and expertise among the Humanities faculty of the MCCCD. In response to the Higher Learning Commission’s “Determining Qualified Faculty: Guidelines for Institutions and Peer Reviewers,” August 2015, to make the primary academic teaching qualifications at the community college include either a master’s degree in the teaching field or a master’s degree in any area teaching field with 18 graduate semester hours distributed among at least 3 different Humanities teaching fields, the Humanities IC supports the following guidelines for determining if degrees and coursework are within the teaching field of Humanities.
A master’s degree (or higher) in any of the following areas is within the Humanities teaching field: Humanities
Graduate level coursework with the following prefixes, titles or keywords is within the Humanities teaching field: Humanities Prefixes: Prefixes the graduate institution identifies using any of the Humanities “Titles or Keywords” are considered within the Humanities teaching field. A course cross listed with a course using any of the Humanities “Titles or Keywords” is considered within the Humanities teaching field. A 400 level course cross listed as a 500+ level course using any of the Humanities “Titles or Keywords” is considered within the Humanities teaching field.

The Instructional Council will evaluate any other coursework as necessary to determine if that course is within the teaching field. Furthermore, the IC recommends that any faculty members who may need additional graduate level coursework to meet the new HLC requirements, has their proposed course of study approved by the IC before beginning the courses to ensure that the course meets the qualifications of being within the teaching field.
Equivalent Experience Criteria for Humanities
Master's in any field plus cumulative experience that equates to 18 graduate hours in the field (tested experience) as indicated on this template.
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the Humanities (HUM) courses, the qualifying Credits/Equivalent Experience must all be within the eighteen listed Humanities fields listed below with at least 3 credits in at least 3 different fields.
