Our weekly series on Children’s Liturgy has lesson plans and activity suggestions for use with young people who are on the path to Christ Each week, Catechists will find readings and Psalm responses, complemented by prayer, reflection, FAITH discussion questions, and activities. Please feel free to use them as you wish The lessons are created by Adorer-theologians using the lens of the spirituality of St Maria de Mattias, which also embraces precious blood spirituality FIRST While this is the starting point for the lessons, readers are invited to approach them however the spirit moves you The Church is concerned with the availability and understanding of scripture for children who have their rightful place in the Church. FTER eight months we are finally there: we have reached the 21st Ecumenical Council of the Church. If I tell you that the 21st council is the latest one, you’ll know we are talking about the Second Vatican Council, better known as Vatican II. Eight months of weekly articles coveringA previous Church councils; 20 councils, these facts of themselves give some sort of context to the council. It tells us that, in fact, Vatican II was not the council, but a council of the Church, part of a long tradition. Let us recall some of the facts from the other 20 councils. They were always called during periods of prolonged change, both inside and outside the Church. They caused divisions, and often schisms, some of which are still with us today. They could degenerate into power struggles and were often subject to secular influences. Usually, it took very long periods to implement their decisions, and some were still-born. Little wonder, then, that the Church grew reluctant to call a council. Whereas—with very few exceptions—councils in the long-term managed to revitalise the Church, to rectify abuses and to adopt new forms and languages to convey the eternal Truth to a contemporary audience, they never came without significant fall out. The memory of the councils of the 13th century, which embroiled the Church in affairs of the world, and those of the 14th century, which caused the most grievous divisions, lingered on most powerfully. These bad memories were amplified by the fact that the First Vatican Council had also caused divisions—the birth of the Old Catholic Church— and that the Council of Trent had gained a mythical status as the litmus test of Catholicism. For any Pope to even contemplate a council was to ponder the potential for disaster. Yet, on the other side of the argument was the undeniable fact that councils could and did provide long-term solutions, that after the dust and pain had settled after a long period—sometimes as much as a century—peace and a new élan would revitalise the Church. We can but imagine what angsts Pope St John XXIII (right) went through as he launched the Church into the most extensive gathering of prelates seen since the days of Trent. However, like the post-Vatican II Popes were, and are, fundamental was on the cards well before the council.
