I wish to congratulate the Director, Mr. Koay Soo Kau for his great passion in promoting art and in building up this art gallery into one of the best in this country. The art scene in Penang has been very vibrant in the past 10 years. Galeri Seni Mutiara has contributed greatly by providing an excellent venue for many young as well as established artists, both local and international, to exhibit their works. It also provides the important place for art lovers and collectors to view and purchase art works, as well as to socialize in a very conducive environment right in the heart of George Town. It is my sincere hope that the gallery under Mr. Koay will continue to blossom and bring the Penang art scene to a greater height in the future. Dr. Tan Chong Guan PKT, PJK 3 Ten Years’ Journey Ten years have passed quickly like the twinkle of an eye since the gallery first opened its doors in November 2005. The first exhibition on 6th November was by the late Tan Lye Hoe, whereby the whole proceeds from the sale of the artworks were donated to the Heart Patients’ Fund of the Adventist Hospital, Penang. He was indeed a very generous man. The inaugural exhibition of the gallery was on 17th December 2005 and was officially declared open by Y.B. Dato’ Haji Yahaya Bin Abdul Hamid. The man responsible for the setting up of the gallery is Dr. Tan Chong Guan who motivated me. My first collector is Dato’ Dr. Tan Chong Siang. Both the brothers are responsible in the making of Koay Soo Kau as an artist in 1969 and the establishment of the gallery in 2005. For ten years it is the gallery’s vision to promote art in Penang. Its mission is to encourage, develop and foster interest in art and inculcate an appreciation and understanding between the artist and the public. One hundred and fifty nine exhibitions were held in this gallery over the past ten years by local and overseas artists. Based on the passion of art, galleries are able to survive because collectors still acquire art for art’s sake. The passion and willpower to create art is still being practised by many artists despite the lure of producing mediocre or stereotypical works for instant gain. The gallery showcases not only works of the young contemporary artists but also the first generation artists of Penang. The prominent artists like Yong Mun Sen, Kuo Ju Ping, Tay Hooi Keat, Dato’ Chuah Thean Teng, Dato’ Khaw Sia, Lee Cheng Yong, Tan Choon Ghee, Ho Khay Beng, John Lee Ju For, Chia Yu Chian and Zakaria Nor are featured in the Collector’s Gallery. The maintenance and running of the gallery is not an easy task. It needs hard work, patience and endurance. The essence of trust, integrity, love and passion for art between the artist and the gallery for the collectors are vital in order to achieve success. My sincere thanks to Dato’ Dr. Tan Chong Siang for being the distinguished Guest of Honour for this exhibition. My utmost thanks to Dr. Tan Chong Guan for being the Patron of the gallery and his continuous support for the development of art. Thank you to Dato’ Khoo Kay Huat and Seaswift Freight System (PG) Sdn. Bhd. for sponsoring the publication of the exhibition catalogue. I am very happy to see so many artists participating in this 10th Anniversary Exhibition which attribute to the success of the gallery. It will definitely help to put the spirit and life of art into Penang.
