Message from Superintendent Pierce:

First comes thought; then organziation of that thought into ideas and plans; then transformation of those plans into reality. The beginning, as you will observe, is in your imagination. ---Napolean Hill

A 21st Century reality is technology has changed the world and continues to change the way we live and work.

Given the rapid development of technology, compounded by the implementation of Common Core State Standards and a rigorous accountability system, education is deep in the midst of a revolutionary transformation.

Our students are depending on us to engage them in the education they need to thrive in an ever-changing world and workforce. With digital learning opportunities, we can provide cutting- edge tools and resources our students and teachers need and deserve. Given the demands of today’s education and the challenges of tomorrow’s world, digital learning is essential for our students’ success.

ISTE Standards + Common Core = Tools for Success The Common Core State Standards are built upon the idea that being college and career ready also means being prepared for our changing technological society. There are over forty references to technology integration within the English Language Arts standards, and the Standards for Mathematical Practice state that “Mathematically proficient students … are able to identify relevant external mathematical resources, such as digital content located on a website, and use them to pose or solve problems.” It goes on to say that students must be able to “use technological tools to explore and deepen their understanding of concepts.” This sends a clear message that technological tools are no longer an add-on to the curriculum, but an integral component of both teaching and learning. According to the International Society for Technology in Education, “technology, used effectively, can help all students meet and exceed the rigorous learning goals embedded in the Common Core State Standards by providing access to tools and resources that personalize instruction and creating rich, engaging and relevant learning environments” (ISTE Position Statement on CCSS).

ISTE has been a strong proponent of technology in the for many years. In 1997, they came out with the first National Standards for Students. These standards focused first on the skills needed to operate technology, and then on the learning that could happen with technology. In 2007, those standards were revised to focus on the need for students to analyze, learn, and communicate that learning with digital resources.

The ISTE Standards for Students include six strands. Creativity and Innovation is demonstrated through the development of innovative products and processing through creative thinking and knowledge construction. Students use digital media to communicate and work collaboratively to meet the Communication and Collaboration strand. For the Research and Information strand, students use their digital tools to gather, evaluate and use the information found. The Critical Thinking strand asks students to use their critical thinking skills and digital tools to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems and make informed decisions. Students demonstrated competency in the Digital Citizenship strand understand and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of both information and technology. And finally, students should demonstrate an understanding of the technological tools by transferring current knowledge to learning new technologies as well as being able to perform basic troubleshooting on the digital tools being used.

To help teachers envision how these standards might look in their classroom, ISTE published the “ISTE Standards Profile” guide. The guide highlights learning activities that incorporate technology in meaningful ways. A sample activity for a primary student is to collaboratively produce a digital presentation or product in a curriculum area. Not only does this activity meet 4 | P a g e Teacher iPad Guide Santee School District three of the ISTE standards, but it also meets Common Core Writing Standard 6, which states that students will “explore a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including collaboration with peers. “

A sample activity from the ISTE Profiles for intermediate students is to recognize bias in digital resources while conducting research. Common Core Reading Information Text Standard 7 states that 5th grade students need to be able to draw upon multiple sources to demonstrate an ability to locate answers, and use that information to contribute to the understanding of text. Finding multiple sources and applying that information to another text requires an understanding of how bias can influence information found in a source.

In middle school, Common Core Standards for Writing for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects Standard 6 requires students to use technology to produce and publish writing and present the relationships between information and ideas clearly and efficiently. The ISTE Profiles provides multiple ways in which students can meet this standard, such as through gathering data, examining patterns, and applying information for decision making using digital tools; describing and illustrating a content-related concept or process using a model or simulation; and participating in a cooperative learning project online.

Technology is changing at a rapid pace, and so are our students. The generation being taught today has never lived in a world without Google, Wikipedia, or cell phones. The ISTE Standards help guide teachers in preparing students for a future in this technology-driven, globally-competitive world.

SAMR: A Model for Technology Integration

The SAMR model was developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura to help educators better understand how technology integration impacts teaching and learning. A primary goal of this model is to show teachers how to incorporate meaningful technology experiences INTO their curriculum, rather than treat technology experiences as stand alone activities. The model helps teachers “design, develop, and integrate digital learning experiences that utilize technology to transform learning experiences to lead to high levels of achievement for students” (Beyond Substitution: The SAMR Model).

The SAMR model is comprised of four levels. The bottom two levels use technology as a tool to enhance a lesson, whereas technology transforms the lesson in the top two levels by providing opportunities unavailable without access to technological tools.

SAMR In Action Consider a writing assignment students were given this school year. In a traditional classroom, students sit with pen and paper and handwrite their assignment. With technology as a substitution tool, students type out the work using a word processing tool such as MS Word, Pages or Google Docs. Nothing has changed except the use of a keyboard instead of a pen. When students use the thesaurus or spell check feature of that word processing tool they are using technology as an augmentation tool. It provides some assistance to the student, but that assistance could have been obtained in other ways. 6 | P a g e Teacher iPad Guide Santee School District

Once the student starts moving to the modification level, the assignment includes elements that could not easily be done without the technology. For example, students could share their writing with other students via Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive for online collaboration. They may choose to use Skype or Facetime to discuss their writing with an expert in the field. Or they could post their writing to a website such as TeenInk.com for feedback from their peers.

At the Redefinition level, the writing is transformed in ways unimaginable a few years ago. Perhaps students use Aurasma, a photo recognition app to link to other content like a video documentary created by the student. Or students may construct an eBook that incorporates multimedia to bring the writing to life and publish it to iBooks. Applications of SAMR As you reflect on the application of the SAMR model, consider the following questions:

iPad Integration Tips and Tricks

The tips and tricks shared here have been curated from conferences, articles, and teachers.

1. Start gradually.

Technology integration is a process. Start with your comfort level, and then seek out opportunities to grow from there. Opportunities can be found in many places – professional learning workshops, colleagues, forums, and even the students in your classroom. As your comfort level increases in the use of iPads as a learning tool, its integration into your curriculum will increase as well.

2. Be selective of the apps you choose to keep.

There are thousands of apps out there, and many of them are free. What makes them worth including on the homescreen? Is there a need to have 25 different apps that teach fraction skills? Seek out "open-ended tools"--apps that utilize different media, encourage students to be creative, and can be used for a wide variety of purposes.

3. Stay organized.

Just like documents on a computer, apps on an iPad can become hard to find if they aren’t kept organized. Consider creating folders by app type so they can be grouped together. Example folders include: video tools, writing apps, iProducts, or consider grouping them by the 4C’s. Organized and still can’t find the downloaded app? Use the Search Bar option.

4. Learn the shortcuts.

As a touchscreen device, the iPad includes many multitasking hand gestures to make navigating the iPad a breeze. Become familiar with swiping, tapping, and pinching commands. Here are a list of videos and websites to show you how.

5. Siri is your friend.

Siri can do a lot more than provide weather forecasts. She can read and send emails, create reminders, open and close apps, and dictate text. She is pretty adept at researching information as well. Students with disabilities may also benefit from Siri’s list of commands. iDownloadBlog has a comprehensive list of Siri commands.

Managing Apps on Student iPads

One of the most commonly asked questions about the student iPad 1:1 program is, “Will I be able to add apps I find to my students’ devices?” The answer is yes. Santee School District’s Digital Learning Initiative included the purchase of a Mobile Device Manager, commonly referred to as an MDM. An MDM allows a teacher to distribute free apps and iBooks to student devices without having to submit a work order. This means that teachers will have the ability to locate a free app, download it, and then push it to all student devices quickly. Teachers wishing to purchase a class set of apps will need to go through the volume purchasing steps. After which, the app will be available for download on student devices.

More information on Santee’s MDM solution will be provided during professional development sessions.

Mirroring Your iPad to the Projector with Reflector

Reflector is software loaded on to a teacher laptop that allows a user to wirelessly display an iPad on a big screen without the need for wires or external hardware. With Reflector, everything that is done on the iPad is wirelessly streamed to the computer using the iPads AirPlay feature. Because the computer is connected to the classroom LCD projector, the image is shared with the class.

Using this software in tandem with an LCD projector, students can present products created on their iPad without having to email or download the file to another computer. Teachers can use the iPad as a presentation station, which frees them from having to stand in the front of the classroom. Reflector also allows for multiple devices to be mirrored at the same time so students can compare work.

To Enable AirPlay

1. On your iPad, swipe up from the bottom of your screen to access Control Center.

2. Tap AirPlay.

3. Select your PC and toggle the “Mirror” switch to on.

More information and help can be found on the Reflector website.
