Closing Session Keynote Speaker: Jackie Stiles

Jacqueline Marie Stiles was born in Kansas City, Kansas on December 21,1978, to parents Pat and Pam Stiles and is the oldest of four children. She grew up in Claflin, Kansas, and attended Claflin High School.

Jackie’s athletic accomplishments are numerous and diverse but she is known best for her endeavors on the basketball court. As a junior in high school, she scored 61 points in 17 minutes of the opening game of the season. By the end of her senior year she becomes the leading scorer for boys and girls in Kansas High School history. Jackie is the state record holder with 71 points in one game. During her four years of high school she won a state record 14 gold medals in track, including the first to win the 400, 800, 1600 and 3200 meters in one day. She placed in the top three in state cross country all four years. This well-rounded athlete also played tennis for the Claflin Wildcats and placed second in state all three seasons.

Jackie continued her basketball career in college at Missouri State University, then Southwest Missouri State, where she returned as an assistant coach for the Lady Bears in 2013. As a player, she scored 3,393 career points, breaking the NCAA all-time scoring record on March 1, 2001, and holding that mark until February 2017. Her competitive spirit helped take the Lady Bears to the 2001 Final Four, a run that included a 41-point scoring effort against top-seeded Duke in the Sweet Sixteen.

As a senior at Missouri State, Jackie was named to the 2001 Kodak All-America First Team, the Associated Press All-America First Team and was named Women’s Basketball News Service Player of the Year. Her 1,062 points that season remained the only 1,000-point season in Division I women’s basketball history until 2014, and stood as the record until 2017. She also holds the No. 6 single game total in NCAA history with 56 points in a March 2000 contest against Evansville.

She was named the Honda Awards program Player of the Year and was the recipient of the coveted Honda Awards Broderick Cup, as well as the as a senior. A four-time Missouri Valley Conference first-team selection, Stiles earned MVC Player of the Year honors as a sophomore, junior and senior, and the award for the league’s most outstanding player now bears her name.

Jackie was the first Missouri State player to be drafted by a WNBA franchise, going fourth overall to the in the 2001 draft. She averaged 14.9 points per game during her first professional season, and received 32 out of 60 possible votes from sportswriters and sportscasters in being named the league’s Rookie of the Year in 2001. Also a WNBA All-Star that season, she played for the in 2002 as well as professionally in Australia before retiring in 2006.

In 2007, Jackie started her own business, J. Stiles Total Training, which includes a variety of ventures including elite basketball training camps and clinics, personal training, motivational speaking appearances and sports broadcasting. She entered college coaching in 2012 as an assistant at Loyola Marymount University.

Never one to back down from a challenge, Jackie added “cancer survivor” to her many accomplishments, undergoing successful ocular melanoma surgery in early 2018.

Jackie was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in June 2016, and also has memberships in the Missouri State, MVC, Springfield Area, Missouri Sports, and National High School halls of fame.

2018 Conference Service Project: The Oasis of Peace Center

The Oasis of Peace Center provides secure, confidential, extended transitional housing and life-skills training for women and their minor children who are victims of human trafficking. They help women renew their self-esteem, develop skills necessary to find employment, and provide a secure environment for women to transition from slavery to freedom. Women can come to the Center through referral from law enforcement and other agencies in the state directly involved with serving trafficked victims. The center is located in Garden City and is the first in western Kansas to offer residential rehabilitation services for trafficked women.

The Center is looking for supplies. Examples include hangers, laundry soap, bathrobes, notebooks, folders and cleaning supplies.
