Model Railway Innovations in 2021

In 2021, ROCO and FLEISCHMANN are to present a large number of new designs, shape variants and very different highlight models. In addition, avid model railway fans can look forward to a multitude of popular colour and lettering variations. Both brands will also be presenting special highlights or focal themes which will delight collectors in particular.

The ROCO programme for 2021 impresses with many new designs and a wide range of variants from different countries. An absolute highlight of this programme is surely the new designs of two steam locomotives - the BR 95 and the Prussian P8. The electric locomotive BR 230 or 372 series family also fulfils a long-held wish for many. Swiss model railway enthusiasts can look forward to the electric locomotive Ae 3/6 I. In addition, ROCO has again produced particular highlights for its wagon sector in 2021: With the Pwgs 41 freight train accompanying car, the Zacns tank wagon and the T3000e double-pocket wagon, more finely-detailed miniatures are rolling onto H0 tracks.

Fans of TT-gauge railways have good reason to look forward to 2021! After many requests, ROCO has decided to recommence manufacture of several TT range classics. On the occasion of its 60-year anniversary, we will be putting the 18 201 steam locomotive as the 02 0201 (Art. no.: 36035, 36036) onto the small tracks. The range is rounded off with a steam locomotive from the DR Class 44 (Art. no. 36086, 3687) and “Taiga-Trommeln” in the East German (Art. no.: 36295, 36296) and Czechoslovakian designs (Art. no.: 36297, 36298). These are equipped with matching SSy-type heavy-duty wagons for both railway administrations (Art. no.: 37594, 37595).

ROCO H0-gauge highlight themes

The “Edition” model railway slewing crane EDK 750 After its successful market launch last year, the theme of work trains is to continue in 2021. ROCO will be producing the much-requested DR version of the original EDK 750 (Art. no. 73037/79037) in its blue livery. This is the original colour of such cranes used by the Deutsche Reichsbahn, before they were repainted at a later date.

There will also be a locomotive to match - the diesel locomotive BR 111 (Art. no. 70813 ff.), as well as an authentic work train (Art. no. 74053).

Fans of Czech railways can look forward to the ČSD version of the EDK 750 (Art. No. 73038). These cranes are still in operation today on the Tschechische Staatsbahnen. At the time of their arrival, they were widely considered wonders of modern technology, which provided assistance when trains derailed or during track construction. To match the crane, the diesel locomotive T 478 (Art. no. 72946), as well as an authentic work train (Art. no. 76019) are also to be produced.

Steep line sections in Thuringia – with the BR 95 The production of the Class 95 steam locomotives was announced in 2020, and models will be made available this year. With its “Edition” model, ROCO is once again displaying great skill in the creation of its steam locomotives. In keeping with company tradition, the model stands out due to its separately-applied pipes, open grids and delicately-crafted appearance. The finely- recreated spokes on the wheels look highly authentic, and the partially-open bar frame is true to the original. Digital versions of this model are rolling onto H0 tracks with powerful sound and dynamic steam. The driver’s cab and running gear lighting feature a switchable design. This gives the Class 95 the appearance of the full-size original even at a scale of 1:87 when it sets off along the tracks. The range also features a matching 6-part freight train (Art. no. 76030) along with another new design, the Pwgs 41 in the DR version. However, those who prefer to put the Class 95 at the head of passenger trains can take the two 3-part

sets–– with Reko coaches in authentic livery including the repair patches (Art. no. 74070/74071).

In the mountains with ROCO Rack-and-pinion railways are still used today in many countries, usually for tourist traffic. They are used to ascend steep inclines with the aid of a toothed rack. Rack-and-pinion railways are also a particularly charming feature in model railways. They can frequently be used to enhance less appealing parts of a layout. ROCO is to produce a themed package in 2021 featuring a toothed rack steam locomotive (Art. no. 73159) and a toothed rack electric locomotive (Art. no. 70442 ff.) based on the well-known E69.

There will also be a passenger coach to match (Art. no. 74506 ff.), as well as a luggage van (Art. no. 74508). All models will be delivered to customers in the authentic blue-cream coloured livery of the “Alpspitzbahn”. The popular ROCO-LINE track system is to be supplemented appropriately with toothed rack elements (Art. no. 42602) and an assembly aid (Art. no. 42603).

The TEE Roland – from the north of down to sunny Italy The marriage of the Trans-Europ-Express trains connected the most important metropolises together. In addition to their high standard of passenger comfort, they travelled at frequent and well-planned intervals. Most TEE trains were seen as the epitome of exclusive travel. This year, ROCO is to commemorate the well-known TEE “Roland” with its 1:87 scale model. From 1963 onwards, the “Roland” ran from Bremen through to Basel or Zurich in Switzerland, before continuing to Milan in Italy.

ROCO offers the DB classic locomotive to match, the Class 103 (Art. no. 70212 ff.), as well as the SBB Re 4/4 II (Art. no. 71405 ff.) and the Italian E444 (Art. no. 70890). The train of wagons is to be produced as part of three different, highly-interesting carriage sets (Art. no. 74072, 74073, 74074).

The long-distance train – transcending borders then as now In the annual timetables from 1986 to 1988, the train pairs IEx 74/75 “” and D 374/375 “Vindobona” operated between -Lichtenberg and hln. In unified form as the D 374/375 “Vindobona/Hungaria”. Here the carriages from Berlin to represented the regular trainset, and the carriages to a through carriage group.

ROCO has replicated this train true to the timetable year 1987/1988, consisting of type Y/B 70 and Halberstadt carriages, divided into three carriage sets (Art. no. 74188, 74189, 74190). Since 2020, the CD and the DB AG have operated the between Berlin and Prague, and Epoch VI collectors can also enjoy the respective models (Art. no. 70487 ff., 74064 ff.).

ROCO H0-gauge - new designs

The P8 steam locomotive – the jack of all trades For a long time, Class 38 steam locomotives were a common sight on German branch lines. There they mainly hauled passenger trains, and thus proved irreplaceable for a long time in regional transport. Following the two World Wars, the P8 could be found in almost all of Europe, and was used in different areas by the railway administrations. And no wonder, as almost 4000 units of this “jack of all trades” had been built. They were only phased out of service when the increasing modernisation of railway administrations heralded the arrival of diesel and electric locomotives. In its advance notice of product developments for 2022, ROCO is presenting the complete new design of this locomotive as an accurate and finely- detailed model which leaves no wishes to be desired. After many years, this finally provides model railway enthusiasts with a contemporary implementation of this model. In an initial step, the following classic locomotives will roll onto H0 tracks: The DB Class 038 (Art. no. 70379 ff.) and the BR 38 belonging to the DR (Art. no. 71381 ff.). Both of these models are from the popular Epoch IV.

The Ae 3/6ˡ electric locomotives – Swiss clocks on wheels The Ae 3/6ˡ series electric locomotives were procured from 1921 to1929 in several order instalments. Due to their long period of procurement, various technical innovations were also installed in different series. The performance of these locomotives was enhanced from 1,450 kW to 1,600 kW, and, thanks to the good running characteristics, the maximum speed could also be improved. The 10700 locomotive was used from 1927 to 1986 in the Depot Bern. It is still used today as an operational historic locomotive in the Depot Olten, and is owned by the SBB Historic Foundation. The ROCO model of this Swiss classic is already being implemented. As is to be expected from ROCO, the Ae 3/6ˡ has also been produced to the current model construction standards: attached handle rails and free-standing parts as well as ultra-modern technology characterise this locomotive. At the beginning of 2022, not only the Museum locomotive 10700 (Art. no. 70089 ff.) is to be launched, but also a classic Epoch V version (Art. no. 70087).

Electric locomotive serie 230– in operation between Germany and the In the 1980s, the DR decided to procure electric dual-system locomotives in order to simplify the consistently-increasing flow of traffic and operational processes in cross-border transport between the GDR and . The ČSD Classes ES 499.1 and 499.2 served as a basis for the engines. However, the Škoda locomotive factory had never built a locomotive for the AC system before, and for this reason these unit parts were supplied from the GDR. Due to the ČSD’s requirements, this resulted in a two-fold contract for Škoda, with 15 BR 372 locomotives and 20 BR 230 locomotives for the DR. ROCO is fulfilling a long-held wish for both German (Art. no. 71219 ff., 71223 ff.) and Czech model railway enthusiasts (Art. no. 71221 ff., 71225 ff.) through their implementation of this locomotive series. The Class 230/372 locomotives from various epochs are to introduce the series. No wishes have been left unaccounted for during implementation: separately attached parts, optimised driving characteristics and a large functional scope in the digital version will delight model railway fans. In addition to the engine room, the driver’s cab and the control panel can be illuminated. The newly-developed “Dynamic-Sound Paket” has been used in H0 applications for the first time. The mounting of the current collectors in completely new design is also outstandingly realistic. Their attachments are almost invisible. ––

The Pwgs 41 accompanying car The Pwgs 41 luggage van was built in the 1940s by the DRB. Here the construction principles from passenger train luggage vans were used as a basis. Following the Second World War, the remaining cars were used by the Deutsche Bundesbahn in passenger trains and in freight trains. After many years, the ROCO model (Art. no. 74220, 74229, 76030) will for the first time be produced as a correctly-implemented large series model of this car. Initially, variants of the original car with and without the striking raised cabs were implemented. The loading compartment doors can be mounted in three positions and thus permit the representation of different operating situations.

Combined transport – the T3000e Within a space of only a few years, ROCO is now launching its third completely new design in the “combined transport” sector. With the type T3000e articulated double-pocket wagon, ROCO is fulfilling a frequent request made by railway enthusiasts. In line with the prototypes, the programme includes versions with 4 or 8 folding bars as well as those with or without transition plates, and different steps and handle rails depending on the respective variant. The bogies, which guarantee narrow distances between wagons in a train have also been reproduced true to the original. Many versions are to be produced featuring different loads such as truck trailers, containers and tank containers (Art. no. 77386 ff.).

The Zacns tank wagon – in operation throughout Europe The four-axle tank wagon, with its load capacity of 95 m³, is used on this model for the transportation of light crude oil products (kerosene, gasoline, diesel, heating oil) and liquid chemicals. Typical of this tank type is the lowered walkway grid at the transition for loading hatch inspection. This model (Art. no. 77460 ff.) is a completely new tank wagon design. It features various prototypical sign boards, open walkway grids or shunting treads, and a delicately-detailed shunter’s platform and wagon floor. Various paintwork variants are offered in this range. ––

The N-gauge programme by FLEISCHMANN is once again to present many new designs and technical updates in the year 2021. The highlight of this programme must surely be the imposing, diesel-electric double locomotive V188, the full-size prototype of which attained true cult status and remained in operation right into Epoch IV. And yet French and Dutch variants are also to appear in the electric locomotive sector with the “Nez Cassé”. And the FLEISCHMANN brand has again shown great ambition in the wagon sector: In addition to the UIC-X carriages, there are revised versions of the EW IV coaches belonging to the SBB as well as a four-axle tank wagon, the covered freight wagon Gbs 1500 and the Hbbillns sliding-wall wagon as completely new designs.

The Alpen-See-Express With the introduction of the DB Class schedule as of 1st January, 1968, the numeration of the end cars on the VT 11.5 was changed to BR 601, and that of the intermediate cars was changed to BR 901. In 1971, the Deutsche Bundesbahn set up the Intercity system as a city express transport system, with first class rolling stock running at two-hourly intervals.

On average, six units were deployed per day. After conversions were carried out, the train was used as special tourist transport (“Alpen-See-Express”) from 1980. Starting from and Dortmund, these tourist trains travelled through the popular holiday regions of Southern Germany and Austria. With the FLEISCHMANN model (Art. no. 741005 ff, 741006), it is possible to reproduce such transport constellations to a scale of 1:160.

Train of the year 2021 For many years, the FLEISCHMANN train of the year (Art. no.: 781210, 781290) has been a fixed part of the N-gauge programme. This tradition is also to be continued in 2021. The KPEV freight train represents a model hitherto missing from the programme, which supplements type G 8.2 steam locomotives with an authentic freight train featuring a freight train accompanying car.

“Combined transport” As expected, FLEISCHMANN is again to produce countless “combined transport” models in the year 2021. This includes classic locomotives such as the Siemens in attractive liveries. For example, we have the electric locomotive BR 193 belonging to SBB Cargo International, as the so-called “Hollandpiercer” (Art. no. 739283 ff.), or in the red “Zebra look” of the Lokomotion (Art. no. 739284 ff.) as well as the Swiss Re 465 belonging to the BLS in its updated refit livery (Art. no. 731321 ff.). ––

FLEISCHMANN N-gauge new designs

The double diesel locomotive V188 – a true powerhouse In 1941 and 1942, a total of four Type D 311 double locomotives (Art. no. 725101) were put into service by the Deutsche Wehrmacht. They were constructed to haul heavy railroad guns. Two locomotives, the V 188 001 a/b and the V 188 002 a/b, were retained by the Deutsche Bundesbahn following the war. A third locomotive was used to provide spare parts. These locomotives proved their worth in heavy freight train and shunting services, mainly on the Spessart-Rampe. After damage to the generator, the V 188 001 was phased out in 1968. The V 188 002, later the 288 002 (Art. no. 725100 ff.), remained in operation in the Franconian region until 1972. Both machines were scrapped in 1973. With the V188, this historic locomotive is now being produced as a contemporary N-gauge model in a completely new design. This includes a Next18 interface and driver’s cab lighting, in addition to a powerful sound and a buffer capacitor in the digital designs. To match the DRB version, we offer a 3-part set consisting of a heavy-duty wagon loaded with Panther V tanks (Art. no. 845606)and a 4-part freight train (Art. no. 880907). A 6-part freight train (Art. no. 880906) is to be made available for the Epoch IV version. Using these freight train sets, prototypical trains can be reproduced for both epochs.

The electric locomotive BB 7200 From 1976 onwards, the Französische Staatsbahnen (SNCF) procured a total of 237 units of the BB 7200 multi-purpose locomotives for use in the French direct-current network. The design of these locomotives, with their so-called “Nez Cassé” (broken nose), was created by the Frenchman Paul Arzens, who was responsible for designing several SNCF locomotives around that time. From 1999, these locomotives were distributed to serve different business sectors, and since then have been used for very different types of train. With the new FLEISCHMANN model, a strikingly successful reproduction of the prototype is now available to a scale of 1:160. Amongst other things, the completely reconstructed current collectors look exceptionally convincing. One of the versions available is the BB 7200 in Epoch IV (Art. no. 732135 ff.), and the other is the BB 22200 in Epoch VI (Art. no. 732136).

A Frenchwoman in the Netherlands – the 1600 The NS received these four-axle electric locomotives of the 1600 series based on the French electric locomotive BB 7200. In the year 1981, when they were introduced, they were the strongest NS locomotives in the fleet. With an operating weight of 83 t, their output was 4,540 kW, and their maximum speed was 140 km/h. In the N-gauge programme, this locomotive is now being produced in a completely new design according to the Dutch prototype. Suitable ICK carriages (Art. no. 863997) are to be produced for the yellow Epoch IV variant (Art. no. 732100 ff.). For operation in current freight transport, the series 1800 is to be produced in the DB AG livery (Art. no. 732101 ff.).

Express train transport with the UIC-X carriage More than 6,145 DB express train carriages were designated UIC-X carriages. These were put into operation from 1952 onwards, and used in part for half a century in express trains and in Intercity transport. These carriages featured a level of comfort hitherto unknown in Europe. The development of express train carriages in the new standard length of 26.4 m was initiated in 1950. The Waggonfabrik Westwaggon in Köln-Deutz was responsible for these developments, working in accordance with the specifications provided by the Wagon construction and Purchasing Department of the Bundesbahn-Zentralamt in Minden. All wagons were equipped with Minden-Deutz design bogies. In the year 2021, a completely new wagon design (Art. no. 881908, 863920 ff.) is now finally to roll onto model railway tracks. This model features an impressive, prototypical buffer height and contemporary implementation.

The Swiss passenger carriage – the EW IV coach The standard type EW IV coaches were supplied to the SBB from 1981 onwards as one of the largest Swiss coach fleets, numbering over 500 units. The car body is produced as a welded steel lightweight construction. Travellers loved these coaches due to their generously-sized interiors with face to face seating, and the fact that they ran smoothly even at high speeds. The EW IV coaches have been subjected to diverse modernisations, but still run today across almost all of Switzerland. The N-gauge models (Art. no. 890320 ff.) have undergone revision in terms of the close coupling kinematics, the finer details on the bogies and the delicate implementation of the window frames. The EW IV dining car in its completely new design is an intricately constructed model. ––

The Uahs tank wagon – in use for many decades The four-axle tank wagon of the type Uahs (known as the Zas from 1980), was built from the year 1972, featured a load capacity of 880 hl or 88 m³, and was offered by wagon hire companies in many railway administrations as a private wagon [P]. The wagon was used for the transportation of heavy fuel oil and mineral oil products. For a long time, there was no N-gauge contemporary model of a four-axle tank wagon available. The FLEISCHMANN model (Art. no. 825810 ff.) can be used from Epoch IV right into Epoch VI. The models have been produced with different bogies for wide variant diversity, depending on their archetypes. Finely-reproduced access ladders and many other details successfully round off this model.

The covered freight wagon Gbs 1500 Until the year 1983, over 17,000 covered freight wagons Gbs 1500 were produced. Amongst these were various versions as insulated box cars and express freight wagons. Several undercarriages were equipped with brakeman’s platforms and heating pipes. Due to a lack of production capacities in their own factories, the wagons were also built in Serbia, Romania and even in Spain. Due to their suitability for operation in RIV, MC or OPW traffic, the wagons were also used for transport outside GDR borders, and could therefore frequently be seen in freight trains belonging to other railway administrations prior to the reunification. These cars were still being used after the reunification as part of the DB AG inventory until the late 1990s, and were not phased out until the 2000s. The new N-gauge model (Art. no. 826210 ff.) is equally versatile in use and also looks most attractive: fine engravings, a detailed wagon floor and prototypical design differences characterise the models.

Hbbillns sliding-wall wagons - used across Europe In practically all European railway administrations, the twin-axle sliding-wall wagons of the type Hbbi(ll)ns(s) are currently the standard wagons. This wagon is ideal for the transport of weather-sensitive, large-volume and palletised cargo. This means that the wagon is also perfect for matching with any FLEISCHMANN range locomotives and freight wagons from the current Epoch. These models (Art. no. 826250) will impress customers in the establishments of specialist dealers with their fine details and flawless prints.
