On the occasion of HomeFront’s Silver Anniversary, this annual report honors the resilience of an idea: the idea that if a reality denies any bright young life the chance it deserves, that reality can and must be changed. For 25 years, that idea has inspired thousands of people here, where we live, to do great things.

It has inspired our staff to turn a job into a way of life. It has inspired volunteers and donors to share what they have to give year after year. It has inspired corporations to become philanthropic leaders and to hire our clients. And, it has inspired people born into a cycle of hopelessness to believe that they have it in their power, with HomeFront’s help, to end that cycle for their children and grandchildren forever.

In these pages, we’ve visited with clients, donors, volunteers and staff. They reflected on our past and shared with us their wishes for HomeFront’s future. Graduation is one of the most powerful testaments of success, accomplishment and empowerment. Every day over the last 25 years, we have witnessed many We continue to work, with your help, toward our vision for the similar examples of clients taking giant steps as they move forward. future where all children have safe and dignified homes.

The huge amounts of time and energy that went into logistics in for themselves individually and collectively. past years can now be spent in giving clients exactly what they need, when they need it. It is a source of joy for me every day.

However, life is not like the movies and there is no “happily ever after” music playing on our Silver Anniversary. The State of New Jersey is grappling with a dire budget crisis Board of Trustees and has chosen to cut approvals of aid to its most vulnerable citizens by a whopping 47%. Allen Silk, Chair While donations have always provided a margin of excellence for HomeFront, govern - Ruth Scott, Vice Chair ment funding was our foundation and that foundation has cracked. We are now facing providing for people without the necessary funding for services. Many agencies that Pat Hartpence, Secretary serve the homeless are closing their doors and the ugly image of people living on the Anthony Stewart, Treasurer street will become more prevalent. It is ironic (and also miraculous) that our beautiful Susan Bowen new rent-free Family Campus came just in time to save us from that same fate, if barely. Tanuja Dehne Still, the joy in what we do remains like a wildflower popping up in unexpected Brian Kasper places. I dashed into the market recently and ran into the manager of the meat depart - Phyllis Marchand ment, recognizing him as one of our very first clients from the motels when he had been Rose Mazzella laid off and his family became homeless.
