jazzweek.com • October 23, 2006 JazzWeek 9 Radio Q&A: Gary Walker, Music Director of WBGO

t’s fun to talk to DJs all over the country, but it really sort of odd to actually chat one on one with your morning drive guy, which Gary Walker is for me. The fa- Imiliar voice actually reacting to the questions you ask – it’s a little different than buzzing around in your car going: “Who is that on piano?” or any of the other ques- tions we direct at our radio as listeners. What follows is the first of a two-part inter- view with Walker. The first focuses quite heavily on the WBGO’s recent fund drive and how the station approaches such a crucial part of its ongoing struggle to keep the lights on and signal static free. – Tad Hendrickson It’s Friday and your shift is over. Are you off for the weekend? I host stuff for the Westchester Jazz Orchestra and the season opener is tomorrow night in Irvington, New York. Sunday we’re doing a broadcast with Jimmy Heath. No rest for the wicked. Do you do a lot of weekend stuff? When it rains it pours. Because you also end up doing those jazz cruises too. We bicycle those around. I did one with James Moody last May for his 80th Birthday.➤ I know that Michael Bourne is going to Ireland next week. Now it’s about to the Pori Jazz Festival this summer. So how did the fund drive go? I’m sure that your numbers are in such a different consumer realm than nearly everyone else, but you still have to do the work. spendable The fund drive, as the all are, was a lot of work, but it went okay – we call them membership appeals. income. A lot Membership appeals? That sounds like clever marketing. of people now It kind of is. It’s basically a fund drive, but the whole premise is to worry less about think that they the money and make more of an appeal to listeners to become members. We find and believe that many of the people who listen to the radio station don’t realize that “ can’t afford they are as important as Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington and Chick Corea and Woody Herman and all the great music that is on WBGO. Jimmy Heath wrote a to belong to tune on the new Dizzy tribute called “Without You, No Me” and that is the whole things like design behind membership appeal. their public Did you make your goals? We did pretty well. It took us a few extra days to hit our targets. radio station Do you just keep going until it’s met? and public Sort of. We’ll go until we stop one portion. There is no fine here for becoming a member of We’re trying to 88.3, whether you’ve listening for two days or 20 years. It’s the satellite televi- necessity. sion, and even to some extent satellite radio. It’s iPods and all that other stuff. We still have a pretty significant cum, which is up around 300,000 [listeners], which is good for us. Now it’s about consumer spendable income. A lot of people now think that they can’t afford to belong to things like their public radio station and pub- lic television. We’re trying to convince them that it’s not a luxury; it’s a necessity. If they listen for six or seven hours a week, those are the people who we are talking to. If you pay your cable bill, and your Sprint bill for your cell phone, we’re trying to convince them that public radio and public television are just as important as those two items. Because it keeps you in the mix culturally. It went well and we reached our goal. Which was? It was $500,000. How often do you do them? We’re tri-annually. We do a September appeal, a February appeal and a May ap- peal. ➤

The important Why pick these times? In large part it’s cash flow. September is the end of our fiscal year, which explains thing isn’t to that one. The February drive is right in the middle, so to speak and it seems like a good time – in our area it’s colder than hell so we have more of a captive audience. listen to Miles In May we do it because in June you have the NBA playoffs, weddings, vacations, Davis doing a graduations – there is just a lot of things on people’s minds. If we moved it to the summer, a lot of our listeners are gone. We might work around Mothers’ Day and 1955 concert, we might have a theme for that, like: “If your mother’s a jazz fan, do a little some- but that you thing for mom.” Same with Fathers’ Day: “Don’t just give dad another tacky tie.” There’s other outreach stuff as well. “are listening to We’ve got outreach stuff like live concerts, that not only sound good on the ra- a classic piece dio and on the Internet, but we’re in those places. Like: “Here’s Dizzy Gillespie at Birdland,” or “Here’s Miles Davis at current. Newport in 1955, which is important because that was when [George] Avakian saw him and eventually signed him to Columbia.” The important thing isn’t to listen to Miles Davis doing a 1955 concert, but that you are listening to a classic piece of music being played in 2006. That keeps it current. How do partnerships with other institutions come together? When Jazz At Lincoln Center wants to get the word out on something they come to us. We partnered with XM Radio for Lincoln Center’s Traveling Cities Se- ries where they paid tribute to different jazz cities – Detroit, Pittsburgh, Los An- geles and Kansas City. We simulcast those live. We do a lot of interviews, but if Dorthaan Kirk agreed to half the interviews we’re offered, we’d be known as Talk 88.3. Back to fundraising. How has the Internet helped? It has become a bigger part of the fund drives. During the on-air portions of the fund drives it now makes up 18 percent of money coming in, comes in online. It might be some guy from Manhattan who just got to work. More surprising to me, and I don’t fully believe it, but I remember one first hour of a pledge drive where I got a pledge from Italy, Japan, Spain and Jerry Stiller. [Laughs] All online. The other day some guy responded to a comment I made on the air and he was respond- ing from Israel. You’re giving satellite radio a run for its money. It’s hard to encompass jazz for the entire world and even think about it. But we get numerous pledges from Texas during the blues hour because there are no blues sta- tions down there. They get their blues from Newark, New Jersey. JW (Part II of our interview with Gary Walker will be in the Oct. 30 issue.)
