    2015–16 Annual Report The Australian Sports Commission is the Australian Government agency that develops, supports and invests in sport at all levels. It was established in 1985 and operates under the Australian Sports Commission Act 1989. The Commission’s national leadership role is achieved through three operational divisions: the Australian Institute of Sport, Participation and Sustainable Sports, and Corporate Operations. The Australian Sports Commission forms part of the Health portfolio. This report This report has been prepared in accordance with parliamentary reporting and legislative requirements and provides details of the Australian Sports Commission’s (ASC) performance and operations for the financial year ending 30 June 2016. This report details how effective the ASC has been at achieving its outcomes for the year as outlined in the ASC 2015-19 Corporate Plan and the 2015–16 Portfolio Budget Statements.     Two rising stars unearthed on sizzling opening night in Brisbane Swimming Australia: April 9, 2017: Swimming has unearthed two new rising stars on the opening night of a sizzling Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Championships at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre tonight. The sport’s biggest names Cate and Bronte Campbell, Mack Horton, Cam McEvoy and Mitch Larkin all lived up to expectations and delivered with some of the fastest times in the world. Defending world champion Bronte Campbell powered over the top of sister Cate and Emma McKeon to win the 100m freestyle; Olympic champion Mack Horton finished too strong to take out the 400m; the world’s fastest swimmer Cam McEvoy looked super impressive to win the 50m freestyle and Larkin hung on grimly to win his fourth Australian 200m backstroke title. But the breakthrough performances of Queensland teenagers Ariarne Titmus (St Peters Western) and Shayna Jack (Commercial) will provide two fresh faces on the Dolphins team for this year’s FINA World Championships in Hungary. Titmus, just 16, clocked a 14 second personal best time to win the 800m freestyle and Jack – the latest prodigy out of the Simon Cusack sprint freestyle school, clocked two personal best times in one day to finish fourth in the 100m freestyle with a 53.40 – the sixth fastest time by an Australian Titmus, who moved to Brisbane from Tasmania with her family to further her swimming career two years ago, improved her time of 8:37.50 to clock 8:23.08 (59.83; 2:02.23; 4:08.95) – the fifth fastest time ever by an Australian – swimming past a who’s who of Olympians, Olympic champions and world champions, including Sheridan Burge-Lopez, Michelle Ford, Blair Evans, Tracey Wickham and Janelle Elford.

    Dr. Hahn, Congratulations on your confirmation to serve as the FDA Commissioner. We write to follow-up on your promise to Senators Murkowski and Braun to make real a pathway to provide access to promising therapies to those living with ALS today. The signers of this letter are fighting to save lives. That sentence could be written about any number of terminal illnesses. Today, it is about this generation living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Not because ALS is unique. Instead, like so many others living with terminal illnesses this ALS generations’ fight to save their lives lays bare that we must fundamentally change how we provide access to promising treatments to those who are simply fighting for a chance to live. ALS was discovered over 150 years ago. Lou Gehrig died from it nearly 80 years ago. It afflicts those as young as nine and can occur in every race, gender and ethnicity. Today someone alive is diagnosed with ALS approximately every 5 minutes. It will take their capacity to use their arms, use their legs, to speak, to eat, and ultimately rob them of their ability to breathe. For most, within two to five years. There are no survivors. Ever. This letter, however, is not about the past. It is about the present and the future which for the fight against ALS is finally bright. For the first time in history, the ALS drug development pipeline includes a diverse array of novel treatments from stem cell therapies to gene therapies like those using antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) and adeno-associated viruses (AAVs).
