Among Catholics, the month of May is traditionally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Why? First of all, in ancient Greece and Rome the month of May was dedicated to pagan goddesses connected to fertility and springtime (Artemis and Flora, respectively). This, combined with other European rituals commemorating the new season of spring, led many Western cultures to view May as a month of life and motherhood. This was long before “Mother’s Day” was ever conceived, though the modern celebration is closely related to this innate desire to honor maternity during the spring months. In the early Church there is evidence of a major feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrated on the 15th of May each year, but it wasn’t until the 18th century that May received a particular association with the Virgin Mary. According to theCatholicEncyclopedia,“The May devotion in its present form originated at Rome where Father Latomia of the Roman College of the Society of Jesus, to counteract infidelity and immorality among the students, made a vow at the end of the eighteenth century to devote the month of May to Mary. From Rome the practice spread to the other Jesuit colleges and thence to nearly every Catholic church of the Latin rite.” The month of May is always part of the Easter season, the fifty days we celebrate in the liturgy the Resurrection of Our Lord, a time also of awaiting the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The celebration of May as a Marian month fits well with the liturgical celebrations of Easter and Pentecost as we recall Mary’s great joy in her Son’s victory over death as well as her presence with the apostles in the upper room prayerfully awaiting the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. During this month of May, we pay special honor to our Blessed Mother. In 1965, Pope Paul VI wrote a short encyclical on the month of May. He wrote that May is an occasion for a “moving tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world pay to the Queen of Heaven. During this month Christians, both in church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the benefits of God’s mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance.” Many churches and schools have celebrations of the crowning of images of Our Lady, including our own church and school. This is a beautiful custom that expresses our love for the Mother of God and as our Queen. Other Marian devotions are particularly fitting in the month of May. Of course, the holy rosary is always a wonderful prayer to enter more deeply into the mysteries of Christ’s life with Mary. It is a Gospel prayer. All honor that we give to Mary is ordered to, and leads to, the adoration of God. Devotion to Mary fosters within us a faithful adherence to her Son. When we crown images of Mary, we are honoring her. In honoring Mary, we are ultimately praising God for He bestowed on her. Amidst COVID19, as we honor Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God and Our Mother, let us entrust ourselves, our country and the whole world, that she may obtain for us God’s blessings and protection. Blessed Virgin Mary, pray for us! KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS PRAY THE ROSARY: St. John Paul II Council 8 Knights of Columbus will be praying the Rosary every day during the month of May and all parishioners are invited and welcome to attend. “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s live for one’s friends.” JOHN 15:1213 Do you love Jesus? Do you consider Him your friend? Jesus says that if we love Him we would be willing to offer whatever we have to Him, not because we want praise and glory, but simply because we love Him. Does your given seem mechanical out of obligation or do you share freely out of love?

In light of our sacred obligation to protect all of God’s children, the Most Reverend Frank J. Caggiano, Bishop of Bridgeport, has issued an updated set of guidelines and procedures for the 2020 Safe Environment Handbook. In the Diocese of Bridgeport, we continue our Safe Environment training utilizing VIRTUS Protecting God’s Children for Adults, Think First and Stay Safe Curriculum of the Child Lures Prevention Program, and the Netsmartz program on technology safety. Safe Environment training and criminal background checks continue to be required of all clergy, employees, volunteers, tenants, vendors, and independent contractors in the Diocese of Bridgeport. These safeguards must be renewed every five or ten years based on a person’s ministry. This year the Office of Safe Environment, in full compliance with the U.S.C.C.B. Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, is conducting a full audit of the Diocese of Bridgeport. St. Mark will be audited in the Fall 2021. VIRTUS training, recertification, background checks, and Executive summary sheets are to be on file at the time of the audit. Therefore, we are providing a comprehensive list of those individuals whose VIRTUS training is past due for recertification. Understanding that last year was a “lost year” due to the pandemic and persons not able to meet in person for training, and some not having access to computers, Jared Forcier has graciously agreed to conduct an inperson training session at St. Mark on Sunday, May 23, at 1:15 p.m. in the Parish Center. Please register online at www.virtusonline.org. If you do not have a computer, you may signin at the door. Background check forms will be at the training session for completion, as well as Executive Summary sheets. These can be completed and returned to Jared for submission to the Rectory Office. Approximately 70 seats will be available. We will most likely run a second training session in June. If you have documentation showing an updated VIRTUS session not noted below, please send a copy to the Rectory Office. If you have a computer and wish to login and recertify online, remembering your user name and password, please do so! For those parishioners who can no longer volunteer please notify the Rectory Office so your name is removed from Safe Environment/ VIRTUS. Please note that it may come down to persons having to show their VIRTUS credentials when showing up to volunteer to make sure our safety procedures are being followed. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Let’s work towards making St. Mark 100% compliant at time of audit !!! EXCELLENT PROGRESS TO DATE! Many parishioners have recertified ononline! Others have signed up for class! Let’s keep the momentum going !!!!!
