2 Dr. Javeed Nayeem's Everyday Miracles regales Rotary Mysore

Some have the gift of the gab. Some can be very humorous. Dr. K. Javeed Nayeem, M.D., well- known cardiologist and columnist, has both the qualities. No wonder he left us in splits and with a bad case of belly-ache, even with some poignant moments in between, at the end of our weekly meeting earlier this December at Rotary Center, where he addressed Rotarians on Everyday Miracles! In one instance, a 24-year-old denied a motorbike by his dad consumed pesticides and was brought to him. The good doctor cured him and was profusely thanked by the father, particularly because he survived his horoscope prediction that the boy will have a near-death incident before he turned 25. A few months later, he received the bad news that the young man had died in a bike accident, his father having procured him the new bike recently. He recalled another instance where a drunkard with no hope consumed country liquor and had an unexpected recovery. The doctor-patient relationship is a very special one. He recalled how, during the 1992 Cauvery trouble between and Tamil Nadu, when Dr. Nayeem was posted at , he tended to a Tamil youth who then crossed the border to Tamil Nadu. Many years later, the young man returned to Dr. Nayeem and paid his fees. There was no shortage of embarrassing incidents either. As a PG student at MMC, on night duty, he was in his duty room when his father visited him and spent time with him. As soon as he left, a nurse knocked the door and wanted to take her saree which she had left behind in the earlier shift. The good doctor escaped embarrassment by a few seconds and was left pondering as to what could have been. But he was not so lucky another time when he got down from a bus near Kollegal in a hurry to make a phone call at what he thought was a telephone booth - only to find out that it was a bar. Things became worse when a few recognized him and offered him drinks for free. It took a lot of effort for the doctor to convince them that he was a teetotaler. When asked as to what was the secret to his humorous attitude to life, Dr. Nayeem mentioned that as a fat person, he could neither fight nor run and hence humor alone was his savior. Rtn. Roopa Venkatesh proposed the vote of thanks, in her inimitable style. Thank you Dr. Javeed Nayeem, we could have more such good doctors, nay, good human beings, address us at Rotary!

Governor Rohinath was satisfied at the end of his official visit on the 29th of November. He felt that Rotary Mysore had covered all aspects of Service, to a great extent. Not only was Rotary Mysore the seniormost club in the district, it had so far contributed $2,85,000, 8 Major Donors, and over 200 PHFs. All its major projects were exemplary. Rotary Day Inspires Mysuru (write-up by Rtn. Arun B.R.)

Grand Welcome RID Basker speaks Artificial Limb Center

Blood Donation Camp Our Rotarians @ Rotary Day

When RI President Barry Rassin called upon Rotarians to Be the Inspiration, the call went beyond the wordings of the theme. We the Rotarians of RI District 3181 zones 7,8,9 from the revenue districts of Mysuru and took it as a call for each one of us to inspire ourselves and those around us. What better way than to follow the then RIP Gary Huang's lead to celebrate Rotary by highlighting a Rotary Day!It was a call to all Rotary families to showcase Rotary to the general public on and to enhance the image of Rotary to the outside world. For our Rotary Day on 27th Nov 2018 it was PDG R. Krishna who was at the helm of affairs. He was instrumental in bringing in RI Director Rtn. Basker Chockalingam to chair the occasion, who obliged inspite of his hectic schedule. His motivation and support resulted in the program being well conducted by the Asst Governors and 25 Presidents and Secretaries of Rotary Clubs of Zones 7,8,9. True to the spirit of Rotary Day, the program had two sessions: the morning session where we had a multi- disciplinary health camp for the general public conducted by 3 premier hospitals of Mysuru along with a Rotary window showcasing the highlights of our various health projects; and the evening session, where the Rotarians and their families renewed their commitment to Rotary, with camaraderie and fellowship. The arrangements had begun weeks before in right earnest. Rotary Day committees were formed, press meets were addressed, and newspapers covered the publicity for the program. All roads led to Nanjaraja Bahadur Choultry in Mysuru on the morning of the 27th. About 15 stalls were set up for an exhibition of signature projects of various rotary clubs. Free medical camps were organized. Nearly 400 members of the public availed of the health camp. The guests and public were warmly welcomed with the local folksy kamsale' beats. RI Director Basker, who presided, suggested that such

8 ROTARY NEWS health camps are a must to bring about awareness of basic health among the public. This would bring about awareness of Rotary as well. The general public in their hundreds, all under one roof, had their eyes checked up by MRC Eye Hospital, dental checkups by JSS Dental college, heart checkups through ECG&Echo, blood grouping and matching by Narayana Multi-Speciality Hospital. Rotary clubs had organized awareness and enrolment for organ donation, body donation and eye pledging, blood donation camp, and artificial limb fixing. A mega medical camp on a massive scale indeed! In the evening, it was a homecoming of sorts for all Rotarians of zones 7,8,9 even as over 400 descended with their families onto the lawns of the Mysore Race Club House. Starting off with an invocation to goddess Saraswathi and welcome by AG Sunil Baliga, the program gained color with the video introduction of RI Director Basker and took off with the symbolic lighting of the lamp. PDG Krishna set the context with a talk on Rotary Day. He announced an inter-district yoga project with RID 7870 on the occasion. RID Rtn. Basker was felicitated on the occasion. RI Director Basker's talk was the highlight of the evening. He has been an ace motivator throughout, and this occasion was no different. Talking to an audience that included PDGs and other luminaries, he started with a brief on his origins - the small town Karur. He was introduced to Rotary by his father Rtn. Chockalingam and he single-handedly transformed the numbers of his club from 4 to 42 in his presidential year. Today Rotary Karur has along with Karur Vysya Bank, set up a dialysis facility at a cost of Rs. 1.5 crores. Rotary has given us 1.2m friends each, he stated. It has given us opportunities to lead, opportunity to serve the society, to improve ourselves. He said Rotarians in India have a number of reasons to celebrate: India is no: 1 in membership development, no: 2 in contribution to TRF and India is polio-free thanks to Rotary. He brought up the donation of Rtn. D. Ravishankar of RC Orchards to TRF to the tune of Rs 100 crores. He has literally Been the Inspiration for millions around the world and has single-handedly enhanced the image of Rotary. He recalled how he and RIP Barry Rassin were together when this news first broke out; it gave them both an unbelievable yet pleasant, shock. This will transform Rotary in India. Rotarians will think Big from now on. On membership development, he said we need to do more. If we have 1 in every thousand Indians as a Rotarian, we will have doubled the membership of Rotary, he said. Accept it as a challenge. Attitude is everything, he said. We need quality as much as quantity in Rotary. Infuse new blood into Rotary. He concluded by asking us to: “Fly; if you can't fly, run; if you can't run, walk; if you can't walk, crawl; but always keep moving…” RID Basker sir, your words will surely motivate Rotarians to serve with renewed vigor and increased collaboration. In his concluding remarks DG Rohinath affirmed that the district was poised for a 15% growth this year. He was proud that the district project Asha Spoorthi on Anganwadi had taken off well with the theme “Each One Sponsor One”. Vote of thanks was proposed by AG B N Suresh. The program was well compered by Rtn. Rakesh Babu. This was followed by cultural fireworks with a folk dance by the Mysuru kamsale group. The entertainment program was compered by Rtn. Anand. The evening concluded with fellowship and good food, fun and frolic, even as the Rotarians and families let their collective hair down.
