Biographical note Aladár Szegedy-Maszák was born on November 19, 1903, in , Hungary. His father was a legal authority, head of the Imperial Hungarian Court. The family was ennobled in 1887. Aladár studied history and politics at the University of Economy in Budapest and graduated from the École des Sciences Politiques in Paris. He also studied at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. He joined the Hungarian Foreign Service in 1928. In 1932, he was assigned to the Hungarian Legation in Berlin, where he served until 1937. During the following years, he worked at the Foreign Ministry’s Political Division. In 1943, he became head of the Division. In that capacity he tried to establish contacts with the Anglo-Saxon powers with the purpose of finding a way out of the war for Hungary. In March 1944, after the German invasion of Hungary, he was dismissed from his post, and in April he was arrested by the on charges of pro-Allied activity, cooperation with the war time Polish underground, and relations with American and British agencies. After seven months of solitary confinement, he was deported to Dachau. His registration number was 125,739. After the liberation, the American forces put him in charge of Hungarian prisoners of war awaiting repatriation. He was also elected president of the Hungarian Prisoners Committee.

After returning to Hungary, he was involved in the activities of the Hungarian committee preparing the Peace Agreements. In October 1945 he was appointed Ambassador of Hungary to the United States. In December 1945 Aladár married Hanna Kornfeld, daughter of financier Baron Móric Kornfeld, and granddaughter of industrialist Baron Manfréd Weiss, and as such, a member of the Weiss-Kornfeld-Chorin-Mauthner families, which prior to and during the war constituted Hungary’s most influential group of industrialists and financiers. (This was the family which was forced to give up its assets in the so called “Manfred Weiss-SS deal,” buying their way into the safety of Portugal instead of being deported.)

In January 1946 Aladár presented his credentials to President Truman. Later he became a member of the Hungarian delegation at the Peace Conference in Paris. Through his marriage and ambassadorship, he soon became connected to the most substantial fraction of Hungarian émigré groups in the West. In May 1947, when the Hungarian Communists forced Prime Minister Ferenc Nagy (Smallholders Party) to resign, Aladár, along with other high ranking Hungarian diplomats, refused allegiance to the Soviet imposed new Hungarian Government, and decided not to return to Hungary.

In 1949, he worked as consulting editor in the International Broadcasting Division of the Department of State. Following that he joined the Hungarian Unit of the Research and

Information Center at the National Committee for a Free Europe, Inc. Simultaneously, he was the Washington, DC, representative of the Hungarian National Council, the central organization of anti-Communist democratic political exiles. In 1953, he joined the staff of Voice of America, working as commentator and assistant head of the Hungarian Desk. He retired in 1968. During the last decades of his life Aladár lived in Washington, DC, and worked on his memoirs. He died on March 25, 1988. Parts of his memoirs were published in Budapest in 1996.
