Newtown Football & Netball Club - The Ace of Clubs!

Hello Eagles Auskickers. After a week off it was great to see so many Auskickers at our session on Sunday morning. Our Auskickers are learning lots of skills and displaying these in our grid games at the conclusion of each session.

st On Saturday 21 June our Auskickers have the opportunity to play a half time grid game at the Newtown Chilwell vs North Shore senior GFL game at Elderslie Reserve. Each participating Auskicker will receive a snack and drink after the game. Depending on the numbers that wish to take part, we will either run one or two grid games concurrently during the half time break in the seniors. It is important we know if you wish to take part so we can prepare for the th likely numbers. If you wish to take part, please send Greg an email confirmation by Thursday 19 June. If you can’t st th make it on the 21 , there will be another opportunity to play in a half time game later in the year (16 August).

Keep an eye on the calendar of events over the next few months as there are a lot of activities planned both within Auskick and the club. Auskick highlights include half time grid games, AFL player visit and the Super Clinic at Sim- monds Stadium. We will continue to include reminders in the newsletter, announce events at the end of each ses- sion and update the calendar.

Congratulations to the following Auskickers who have received awards in Weeks 7: NAB AFL Auskick Stars of the Week Week 7 Harry McLean, Oliver Smith, Oscar Williams , Oska Rose, Will Morrison, Jaryd Antonenko

SENIOR NETBALL REVIEW

Hi Sports Fans, it’s time for our second netball review of the season, this time covering Rounds 5-9. Let’s do this crazy thing…

Round 5: Newtown at South Barwon How are the burgers? Oh my lord, this is the best burger in the whole competition, no superfluous salads, a juicy patty and ample bacon, this gets my highest rating, 9 thumbs up! How did Newtown go? A and B grade had wins, C and D grade did not have wins and the under 19’s lost by a goal, gosh darn it! Fun fact about South Barwon: You can put Becky Rau on any street in South Barwon and she will be able to find her way home and also somehow acquire a six-pack of Smirnoff Black. Now that’s a super-power! Who’s playing well? Em Wade is having a great season. I overheard one of the under 15’s say that they “wanted to be Em W when they grew up, or maybe a Ferrari”, so it’s possible they were talking about cars, not netballers.

Round 6: Newtown vs. Colac How did Newtown go? It was a win for the A grade, a completely unnecessary and annoying bye for the under 19’s and losses for the other three grades. Why are there so many tall women in Colac? My guess is selective breeding and a diet high in red meat. Fish is good for hair and nails, but nothing beats lamb and beef for growing up big and strong. Who’s playing well? Speaking of growing up big and strong, we haven’t seen too much of Victoria Woolley rushing on to court during games this year and that can be put down to the babysitting dream team of Alex Rau, Denby Taylor, Emma Bright, Emma Castle and Katie Castle. 5 babysitters to 1 two-year old seems like a good ratio to me.

Round 7: Newtown at Bell Park How are the burgers? I passed on the burgers, but the bacon roll I had for breakfast was delightful, but the potato cake I had for afternoon tea was dreadful. Final rank – 4.75 thumbs up. How did Newtown go? All 5 senior squads were in front at three quarter time, and the A, B, D and under 19 squads all held on for wins! Who’s playing well? Liz Moore always remembers to address envelopes before she mails them, but I hear she has trouble addressing the line before throwing the ball in.

Round 8: Newtown vs. GWSP Something educational for the kids: St Peter was one of the twelve apostles, he was the first pope of the Catholic Church and featured heavi- ly in the Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons the not quite as good sequel. How did Newtown go? It was all good news for the under 19’s who came from behind to win a one-goal thriller, and it was also good news for A and B grade who did not come from behind and won by way more than one-goal. Who’s playing well? She’s from Geelong, West is her favourite direction and back when she was a catholic schoolgirl, St Peter was her fourth favourite saint, so it’s no surprise that Sammy Read always saves her best for this clash. Also not surprising, she still has the school uniform.

Round 9: Newtown at St Albans Something educational for the kids: St Alban was a pagan who became Christian after sheltering a priest in his house during a persecution. The lesson here is, as always, “God Bless those Pagans”. How are the burgers? Nope, too soggy and it came in a very worrisome foam container, 3.5 thumbs up. How did Newtown go? Wins for the A and B grade squads, but losses for the other three teams. Boy that Jason Woolley is a good coach; we need to clone him stat. Who’s playing well? Australia’s most famous chef back in the 80’s was Margaret Fulton and her scone recipe is the absolute favourite of Wayne and Cherie Pilkington. They love her scones so much that they named their daughter, Renee Margaret Fulton Scone Pilkington.
