This book was envisioned as a teacher's/parent's resource first, and a project book second. Special emphasis has been given to the resources to make them as clear and easy for the reader to find as possible. For this reason, the author chose to format the re- sources in a simplified manner, with the title of the book first in each listing. Within the school setting, teachers guide the child's educational de- velopment. Many learning opportunities can also be found in inter- actions between a child and other adults outside of school. Parents, grandparents, relatives, caregivers, scout and church group leaders, librarians, neighbors, and family friends, as well as teachers, may play a significant role in developing the talentsof all children. These adults serve as role models, listeners, and cheerleaders; pro- vide space and materials for activities; allow opportunities for grow- ing independence; and encourage creativity. Our society has become very mobile, and today it is both a rare and fortunate child who is surrounded by an extended family. Often a child's relatives and adult friends are scattered throughout the country and may have contact only by letter, telephone, and occasional visits. Even where contact is infrequent or must bridge considerable distances, there are opportunities to provide support and a positive influence. Adults want to make the most of the time they have to spend with children.

From the Compiler I compiled the first edition of this index 25 years ago after a frustrating search to find an article that I knew existed and that I really needed. It was a long search without even annual indices to help. By the time I found it, I had run across a dozen other articles that I’d forgotten about but was glad to see again. It was clear that there are a lot of good articles buried in back issues, but that without some sort of index they’d stay lost. I had recently bought an Apple II computer and was receptive to projects that would let me become more familiar with its word processing program. A cumulative index seemed a reasonable project that would be instructive while not consuming too much time. Hah! I did learn some useful solutions to word-processing problems I hadn’t previously known exist, but it certainly did consume more time than I’d imagined by a factor of a dozen or so. You too have probably reached the point where you’ve invested so much time in a project that it’s psychologically easier to finish it than admit defeat. That’s how the first index came to be, and that’s why I’ve kept it up to date.

    Horse Racing Tack for the HiveWire (HW3D) Horse by Ken Gilliland Horse Racing, the Sport of Kings Horse racing is a sport that has a long history, dating as far back as ancient Babylon, Syria, and Egypt. Events in the first Greek Olympics included chariot and mounted horse racing and in ancient Rome, both of these forms of horse racing were major industries. As Thoroughbred racing developed as a sport, it became popular with aristocrats and royalty and as a result achieved the title "Sport of Kings." Today's horse racing is enjoyed throughout the world and uses several breeds of horses including Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses in the major race track circuit, and Arabians, Paints, Mustangs and Appaloosas on the County Fair circuit. There are four types of horse racing; Flat Track racing, Jump/Steeplechase racing, Endurance racing and Harness racing. “Racehorse Tack” is designed for the most common and popular type of horse racing, Flat Track. Tracks are typically oval in shape and are level. There are exceptions to this; in Great Britain and Ireland there are considerable variations in shape and levelness, and at Santa Anita (in California), there is the famous hillside turf course. Race track surfaces can vary as well with turf being the most common type in Europe and dirt more common in North America and Asia. Newer synthetic surfaces, such as Polytrack or Tapeta, are also seen at some tracks. Individual flat races are run over distances ranging from 440 yards (400 m) up to two and a half miles, with distances between five and twelve furlongs being most common.

Some 1,800 titles are included in this publication; they were selected from approximately 8,000 children's books published in the United States between 1985 and 1989 and are divided into the following categories: (1) books for babies and toddlers, (2) basic concept books, (3) wordless picture books, (4) language and reading, (5) poetry.
