Analysis of Talk Shows Between Obama and Trump Administrations by Jack Norcross — 69 An Analysis of the Political Affiliations and Professions of Sunday Talk Show Guests Between the Obama and Trump Administrations Jack Norcross Journalism Elon University Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements in an undergraduate senior capstone course in communications Abstract The Sunday morning talk shows have long been a platform for high-quality journalism and analysis of the week’s top political headlines. This research will compare guests between the first two years of Barack Obama’s presidency and the first two years of Donald Trump’s presidency. A quantitative content analysis of television transcripts was used to identify changes in both the political affiliations and profession of the guests who appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” CBS’s “Face the Nation,” ABC’s “This Week” and “Fox News Sunday” between the two administrations. Findings indicated that the dominant political viewpoint of guests differed by show during the Obama administration, while all shows hosted more Republicans than Democrats during the Trump administration. Furthermore, U.S. Senators and TV/Radio journalists were cumulatively the most frequent guests on the programs. I. Introduction Sunday morning political talk shows have been around since 1947, when NBC’s “Meet the Press” brought on politicians and newsmakers to be questioned by members of the press. The show’s format would evolve over the next 70 years, and give rise to fellow Sunday morning competitors including ABC’s “This Week,” CBS’s “Face the Nation” and “Fox News Sunday.” Since the mid-twentieth century, the overall media landscape significantly changed with the rise of cable news, social media and the consumption of online content.

BIOGRAPHY BOB WOODRUFF ABC News Correspondent Bob Woodruff joined ABC News in 1996 and has covered major stories throughout the country and around the world for the network. He was named co-anchor of “ABC World News Tonight” in December 2005. On Jan. 29, 2006, while reporting on U.S. and Iraqi security forces, Woodruff was seriously injured by a roadside bomb that struck his vehicle near Taji, Iraq. In February 2007, just 13 months after being wounded, Woodruff returned to ABC News with his first on-air report, “To Iraq and Back: Bob Woodruff Reports.” The hour-long, prime-time documentary chronicled his traumatic brain injury (TBI), his painstaking recovery and the plight of thousands of service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with similar injuries. Since returning to the air, Woodruff has reported from around the globe. He has traveled to North Korea eight times, investigating the growing nuclear threats in the hands of Kim Jong Un. Since 2015, Woodruff has been ABC’s primary correspondent throughout Asia, especially China, reporting on topics ranging from the controversial treatment of Muslims in the Xinjiang province to the United States’ presence in the South China Sea. In 2008, ABC News aired his critically acclaimed documentary “China Inside Out,” which examined how China’s global rise impacts what’s being called the “Chinese Century.” On the streets of Manila, he has seen the rising violence and murders following President Rodrigo Duterte’s drug policies. He traveled to Japan in the wake of the devastating natural disasters to report on the stabilization of nuclear reactors in the country.

  • 1 Application Part 2 Jim Battle 1 What Makes You the Best Candidate for Greater Manchester? the Deputy Police and Crime Commi
Application Part 2 Jim Battle 1 What makes you the best candidate for Greater Manchester? The Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner needs to lead, challenge, develop, coordinate, and monitor to a high standard. Throughout my career and most recently as Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council I gained significant, direct experience of leading, challenging, directing, coordinating and monitoring activities. This experience spans local government, working with the police, partner organisations; the business, voluntary, community, faith, trade union and independent sectors. I have responsibility for leading, challenging, innovating and directing change within organisations and communities, developing and initiating strategic ideas and policies, researching and analysing complex information, supporting and motivating teams. I developed effective monitoring and reporting systems to me from chief officers and established processes to challenge and scrutinise all aspects of policy and performance in local government. As the Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council I identified and developed crime and anti social behaviour reduction strategies through the Manchester Crime Reduction Partnership. By considering the changing, social and political context in which the police, council and community operate in Manchester I set the aims and objectives for the Crime Reduction Partnership and the focus upon key policy outcomes, crime reduction targets and community engagement. Examples of this approach are contained in the three Crime Reduction Strategies 2011 – 2014 ( background attachment A), 2008- 2011 ( background attachment B), and 2005 -2008 ( background attachment C part 1 and 2). The three Crime Reduction Strategy Statements and their implementation have been recognised by the Government and the City Council as milestones in the development of neighbourhood policing, improving public confidence and reducing crime and anti social behaviour in Manchester.

  • Professionalism in War Reporting: a Correspondent's View by Tom Gjelten
Professionalism in War Reporting: A Correspondent's View By Tom Gjelten Carnegie Corporation of New York established the Carnegie Commission on Preventing Deadly Conflict in May 1994 to address the looming threats to world peace of intergroup violence and to advance new ideas for the prevention and resolution of deadly conflict. The Commission is examining the principal causes of deadly ethnic, nationalist, and religious conflicts within and between states and the circumstances that foster or deter their outbreak. Taking a long-term, worldwide view of violent conflicts that are likely to emerge, the Commission seeks to determine the functional requirements of an effective system for preventing mass violence and to identify the ways in which such a system could be implemented. The Commission is also looking at the strengths and weaknesses of various international entities in conflict prevention and considering ways in which international organizations might contribute toward developing an effective international system of nonviolent problem solving. Commission publications fall into three categories: Reports of the Commission, Reports to the Commission, and Discussion Papers. Reports of the Commission have been endorsed by all Commissioners. Reports to the Commission are published as a service to scholars, practitioners, and the interested public. They have undergone peer review, but the views that they express are those of the author or authors, and Commission publication does not imply that those views are shared by the Commission as
