President’s Message Dear Classified Professionals, I can’t believe we are over half way through 2020! Who knew seven months ago, as we rang in 2020, the changes that were awaiting us? Yet, we showed up, put on our masks and helped make the impossi- ble possible for campuses! And, as social, health, and budget issues continue to impact our lives, we persist by working together to assist our students and colleagues adjust to these ever-changing circum- stances. As our world continues to shift and evolve, 4CS is here to encourage your leadership roles and voices which are needed now more than ever. We will try our best to stay connected with you S and keep you informed. One way we will do this is to continue with regular updates via our listserv to provide information on issues and webinars from around the state. To receive these updates, please visit our website to learn how to subscribe to the listserv: http://www.ccccs.org/helpful_links/listserve.html. We also converted our annual Classified Leadership Institute to our virtual 4CS Summer Leader- ship Institute! Our board members were enthusiastic about offering an alternative format and we learned quite a bit from the experience which we hope to incorporate into future events. We hope to continue to provide a variety of opportunities for us to come together and share our ideas. And, we aren’t giving up on in-person events! Please don’t forget to mark your calen- dars for CLI 2021 from June 9-11 at the Visalia Convention Center. Thank you for all that you are doing to keep things moving forward! I know it’s not easy espe- cially as we continue to work from home. In my welcome for the 4CS Summer Leadership Insti- tute, I quoted the Ghanaian proverb: “If everyone helps to hold up the sky, then one person August, 2020 August, does not become tired.” 4CS is here to help you and your senates hold up the sky for you and your communities during these trying times and beyond. Here's to a peaceful and healthy remaining 2020! We hope to see you again very soon! Volume 22,Number ? This is how the 4CS 2020 Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) was formed. SLI started with a general session with California Community Colleges Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley who spoke about the state of the community colleges in light of the pandemic, budget reductions, and governance up-dates. Over 4 days, the Institute topics ranged from governance to fundraising, self-care, communica-tion, and technology. In all, over 300 classified professionals from all over the State attended SLI in a 100% virtual format. From the feedback received, attendees were overwhelmingly grateful for the opportunity to en-gage in quality professional development topics that were readily available to them, were FREE to at-tend, and which were spread over 4 days so they did not have to leave their primary work duties for long periods at a time. One of the obstacles projected by moving professional development into a virtual environment was not being able to truly connect with fellow classified professionals. However, through zoom discus-sion groups, question and answer sections of each workshop, and post-session informal networking, attendees were able to still connect and share their experiences, feedback and ideas. What has 4CS learned from moving into an online conference format? One thing is for sure; our conferences will not be the same in the future. There is a great desire for classified profes-sionals to have professional development opportunities available virtually. If and when the Classified Leadership Institute is back on-ground, there will be components that we look forward to continuing to provide virtually. Lastly, 4CS would like to especially thank all presenters and attendees for making the Summer Leadership Institute a precedent for professional development in the future. WWelcome Aboard! San Jacinto College Classified Senate President/4CS President-elect The classified professionals of Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) aren’t letting a pandemic keep them from staying engaged. After the college closure on March 16th, 2020, the MSJC Classified Senate decided to get creative and implement a weekly Classified Coffee Clutch. What seemed like a simple way to zoom in with your peers and talk about the challenges and opportunities of working from home, turned into something much bigger and more meaningful. MSJC college leadership embraced the idea and allowed classified professionals this opportunity to provide and receive information, share best practices, and provide support for individuals struggling with the home working environment. Each week the numbers increased and when the district decided to suspend the meetings, the senate board took the next step and offered to host on Fridays outside of work hours. The masses were happy and the first Friday session drew a large crowd. Although discussions have changed and these get-togethers are focused on current events and how we can better serve our students, the engagement is what stands out. This small gesture intersected with another activity that began shortly after titled WFH Chronicles. This is a weekly newsletter that showcases a specific subject about working from home and/or best practices. The weekly chronicle inspired the development of the WFH professional development series which provides a panel presentation in correlation with the weekly chronicle. This too has proven to be very beneficial for our district classi-fied professionals and allowed for open and robust dialogue and problem-solving. We have learned that anything is possible with a little ingenuity and that even though we are not together in-person, we are still together virtually, in solidarity and institutional pride. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can change the world.” ~Nelson Mandela~ 4CS Connections August 2020 4 Mt. San Jacinto College Hosts - Gathering of the South Gathering of the Senates - South On February 27, 2020, the classified senate of Mt. San Jacinto College, Menifee campus, hosted the annual 4CS South Gathering of the Senates. Several south region senates were in attendance for a day fostering open dialogue and idea-sharing. The focus of the event was the classified professional role in governance structures, senate/union
