Eddy Merckx, Frans Verbeeck, Raymond Impanis: Brabant racers have put an unmistakable stamp on Belgian cycling history.
The Brabantse Pijl is, in a way, an homage to their feats. The cycling pack winds its way along an inimita- ble path through the green belts around Brussels. April is well under way and the sun already has a slightly longer path through the sky, so it’s no coincidence that in past years, southern riders have often chosen the Brabantse Pijl as their first race of the season. Before taking on the Ardennes in earnest, they make a stop in the heart of Belgium - which has often resulted in very exciting finals.
Last year, Mathieu van der Poel was the undisputed king after a thrilling race with the absolute cream of cycle racing: Julian Alaphilippe, Michael Matthews and Tim Wellens. Who will be crowned the winner of the 60th edition of the Brabantse Pijl this year? The race’s start on the Grote Markt in Leuven - a feast of Brabantian Gothic architecture - gives it just the right atmosphere. The final stretch, in the town of Overijse, famous for its grapes, is crushing work - ideal terrain for a strong adventure-seeker.
