Culturalinformation on religion, traditions, languages, popular foods, sports, andholidays contribute to an understanding of the people and country.Lists of persons who contributed to and are representative ofCzechoslovakia such as former monarchs, presidents, and outstanding andfamous personalities born in and from the country are given. Since 5%of the people in Texas are of Czechoslovakian extraction, anattempt is made to show the relationship between Texas and Central Europewhich began in the early 16th century. Lists of the most famouspersonalities from Czechoslovakia now living in the United States and tengreatest moments in the history of American-Czechoslovakianrelationship comprise the latter half of the volume. Specialfeatures include a short bibliography of Czechoslovakian sources and alisting of collections of available teaching materialspertaining to Czechoslovakia located in the U.S. and Czechoslovakia. EUROPEAN ELITES AND IDEAS OF EMPIRE, 1917–1957 Who thought of Europe as a community before its economic integra- tion in 1957? Dina Gusejnova illustrates how a supranational European mentality was forged from depleted imperial identities. In the revolutions of 1917–1920, the power of the Hohenzollern, Habsburg, and Romanoff dynasties over their subjects expired. Even though Germany lost its credit as a world power twice in that century, in the global cultural memory, the old Germanic families remained associated with the idea of Europe in areas reaching from Mexico to the Baltic region and India. Gusejnova’s book sheds light on a group of German-speaking intellectuals of aristocratic origin who became pioneers of Europe’s future regeneration. In the minds of transnational elites, the continent’s future horizons retained the con- tours of phantom empires. Bouffard, Courtesy of the Library of Congress Map Division, acquisition no. rr000040.jp2. 2 Translator’s Preface What follows contains a translation of the Berichte aus den Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika… [= Reports from the United States of North America] by Franz Anton Ritter von Gerstner, published in Leipzig in August 1839, and posted on the website of “austrian literature online.” It is the companion piece to two other classics of contemporary travel literature, one of them Ritter von Gerstner’s massive description of the transportation system of the United States published by F. A. von Gerstner’s assistant, Ludwig Klein,1 as well as the touching detailed travel narrative of his widow, Clara von Gerstner, Beschreibung einer Reise durch die Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika (Leipzig, 1842) [=Description of a Journey through the United States of North America]. A copy of this book, almost loved to pieces, is part of the rare book collection of the Saint Louis Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and is available online from Hathitrust. The two texts presented here will enable the proper telling of a remarkable if ultimately sad story, preserving and completing an account that is worth preserving for both a European and an American audience. -

Kapitel Geschichtsschreiber der Nation 1823–1836 Ankunft in Prag Im Alter von fünfundzwanzig Jahren war František Palacký ein reifer Mann, den der Vorsatz nach Prag führte, die böhmische Geschichte, hauptsächlich die Hussiten- zeit, zu erforschen und damit zur Festigung des Selbstbewusstseins der tschechischen Gesellschaft beizutragen. Es war für ihn ein Vorteil, dass er sich von der Mehrheit der damaligen tschechischen Patrioten in drei wesentlichen Punkten unterschied. Konfes- sionell betrachtet war er ein liberal und rational denkender Protestant, während die tschechische Bevölkerung überwiegend katholisch war. Die breite Grundbildung, die er in Oberungarn erworben hatte, war im Vergleich zum damaligen österreichischen Schulsystem weitaus stärker von neuen Gedanken aus den protestantischen Ländern Deutschlands und Westeuropas beeinfl usst. Im Unterschied von der sehr beschei- denen Lebensweise der meisten tschechischen Patrioten hatte sich Palacký einige Jahre lang im Umkreis des ungarischen Mittel- und Kleinadels bewegt, was ihm mit Unter- stützung durch Josef Dobrovský den Zutritt zu aristokratischen Kreisen in Böhmen erleichterte. Das waren allerdings nur Vorbedingungen für den ungewöhnlich schnel- len Erfolg Palackýs in Prag. Entscheidend waren sein Aktivismus, sein Fleiß und das zielbewusste Festhalten an seiner Lebensaufgabe. In seinem vom 1. Januar bis zum 21. April 1823 wieder sorgfältiger geführten Ta- gebuch vermerkte Palacký, dass er am Freitag, dem 11. April 1823, um halb elf Uhr vormittags in Prag eintraf1). Er war sich dessen noch nicht bewusst, dass er sich in Prag auf Dauer niederlassen würde, noch kurz vorher hatte er an einen bloß zweijährigen Aufenthalt in der böhmischen Landeshauptstadt gedacht2). Der 11. April 1823 wurde jedoch zu einem Markstein und zum tatsächlichen Wendepunkt in seinem Leben, so dass er es später für passend hielt, den 25. -

Printed in Germany. Preface I first became interested in the history of the Theresian school reform in 2012. As I delved deeper into the statistical sources that the schooling authorities of the Austrian Empire generated over the decades and centuries, my fascination with the topic grew and so did the scale of the task before my eyes.
