Sharing the warm heart of Sedgefield

Winter is upon us and along with it comes the need for blankets for some members of our community who simply can’t afford to buy them. Be they pensioners, those who are ill, unemployed parents of young children, or people whose homes have been damaged or destroyed - a warm blanket means so much! If you would like to make a difference this winter, please consider bringing a new or (clean) second hand blanket to The EDGE Offices @ 63 Main Road (next to the ‘horsey wall’) and we will pass them on to Masithandane for distribution amongst those in need.

Page 2 THE EDGE ISSUE 488 18 May 2016 SNATCH UP YOUR TICKETS! Belinda Bam gives us a sneak preview of ‘Unnecessary Farce’ Last night (Tuesday 17 May) saw the opening of this play performed by members of The Farce Side theatre group at Laerskool Sedgefield Primary. Belinda Bam watched the preview night, and sent this review.

(Above) Romey Bobek (Officer Billie Dwyer), Cornel Delafield (Officer Eric Sheridan), Mike Young (Mayor Meekly) and Emma Rorke (Karen Brown CPA) , seem to find themselves in bit of a pickle. So many doors - so much laughter! (Right) Tamsyn Godfrey (Agent Frank) doesn’t seem to be quite sure what Bomber Webb (Todd) is trying to say to her, but she seldom is.

I had the opportunity, och nay, the privilege, of watching Melanie Baumeister's latest theatrical delight in a special preview on Saturday, the 14 May. “The Farce Side” presents a very necessary must-see production of “Unnecessary Farce” by Paul Slade. The pace is relentless and the actors and actresses superbly cast. Not for the faint hearted, the witticisms, innuendo and adult humour make for an unforgettable two hours of mirth, merriment and hilarity. The comic timing is en-point – and the juxtaposition of Officer Eric Sheridan (Cornel Delafield) and Mrs. Brown (Emma Rourke) is a stroke of genius. Polar opposites on the social spectrum, their characters percolate to provide just the right mix of comedic and stereotypical persona. Combine Officer Billie Dwyer (Romey Bobeck) and Agent Frank (Tamsyn Godfrey), and the jests, jibes and japes begin from the moment the curtain opens.

The Mayor (Mike Young), is not what he appears to be, and as the plot unfolds, is clearly an enlightened man, being both socially and politically tolerant. His random appearances are perfectly timed, and his gentle and apparent ignorance regarding the reality of the plot keeps the laughs coming and coming. The Mayoress (Elaine Hannah) is an endearing and gentle Mayor's wife (it seems), and delivers her character with aplomb. Enter Todd, the Scottish hitman (Bomber Webb). His exceptional ability to carry off a kilt (without looking like an extra from the Edinburgh Festival), as well as an authentic Scottish accent is astounding. Some words get lost in translation, but this is hilariously remedied by Officer Billie Dwyer. The Highland Hitman is most certainly a force not to be reckoned with. My partner and I (both of Scottish descent) had our laughter muscles aching after the performance, and many moments later of recounting and recalling the production which sent us off again into peals of laughter. Whether you are a MacDonald, or a McKay, Anderson, Drewett, McMillan, Van der Merwe, Tshabalala or Hartnick, this production will have your sides aching and deliver your “happy-pill” for the month of May. Tickets for the remaining five nights are going fast, so don’t miss out. Pop into Lemon and Lime (in the Sedgefield Pick n Pay centre) or contact the director on [email protected] or 084 567 9809 for more information. Performances take place on the 19th, 20th May and the 24th,

On Sunday 15 May, Jaco Londt, constituency head and member of parliament for the DA, announced that Bouw- Spies will stay on as the Ward 5 DA candidate for Knysna, but as mayoral candidate she will also top the PR candidate list, with the outgoing mayor Georlene Wolmarans as number 2 on the DA's PR list for Knysna. A much respected politician, this will not be the first time that Bouw-Spies (currently the council Speaker) has taken the Mayor’s seat, as she held the same position from May 2007 to May 2011 for the ANC.
