European champions and Swiss medallists confirmed

Just 44 days before the 41st edition of Athletissima, the organisers confirme that several European champions of the European Championships which have just come to an end will be on the line-up in Lausanne. One of them is Piotr Malachowki from Poland, the defending world champion in the discus throw. The big Polish athlete with an impressive career is currently in the world lead with 68.15m. He already won the gold medal at the European Championships in six years ago. He also won in Lausanne in 2014.

The continental champion in the 100m, Churandy Martina, will compete in the 200m, an event which he won in Amsterdam as well before being disqualified for stepping outside his lane. He won the title in this event in 2012. In Lausanne, the sprinter from the Netherlands Antilles won the race in 2013. It has also been confirmed that the American Ameer Webb will be in Lausanne as well. The man who got third at the US trials won the event at the first DL meet of the year in (19.85) and got second in Rome in the 100m (9.94).

In the 110m hurdles, Frenchman Dimitri Bascou, who was also crowned European champion in the Netherlands, will also run on the Pontaise track on 25 August. He will face Hansle Parchment, the 2012 bronze medallist and runner-up at the world championships.

Exciting face-off in the long jump The women’s long jump is set to be a fascinating event. After the current Olympic and world champion Brittney Reese, the new European champion Ivana Spanovic has also confirmed her attendance. The athlete from Serbia won the silver medal at the Portland indoor world championships, just behind the American (7.07m vs. 7.22m).

In the shot put, the two-time Olympic champion and four-time world champion Valerie Adams will be the favourite in an event which she won in 2012 and 2014.

Swiss medallists Mujinga Kambundji, Lea Sprunger and Kariem Hussein, who all won a fantastic bronze medal in the 100m or 400m hurdles, will also be at Athletissima. The local athlete Lea Sprunger will have a chance to take her revenge on Sara Petersen (DEN) who won the European title in Amsterdam and the last Athletissima event.

At the end of the meet, there will once more be a women’s 4x100m relay with several national teams, of which the Swiss team, who got a very good 5th place in Amsterdam. That team also set the Pontaise on fire with its victories in 2013 and 2015.
