The Demons return all pitchers of 2012 and 8 position players. The Demon pitching staff features 2 senior lefties, Hunter Anthony and Brandon Sullivan…3 junior right-handers, Drew Fisch, Shane Sullivan, and Ty Andrus…sophomore right-hander, Logan Welch…and freshman right-hander, Laney Orr. The RJR pitching staff has it all: lefties, sub- mariners, multiple-arm angles, and hard-throwers. Coach Welch feels, overall, this is the best complete staff he has had in his 17 years at RJR. The 2013 Demon baseballers possess speed, skill, and good arms at every position…but can they score runs?? Yes, they can! The 2012 RJR offense finished the season with a near .300 team batting average. And the 2013 Demons are bigger, better, and more experienced. 1 through 9, Coach Welch sees no easy outs. With the combo of speed, consistency, and power, the Demons will score and score often. The 2013 RJR Demon varsity baseball team will contend for the CPC title. They have experience, skill, and high baseball IQ’s…and they are extremely hard workers. Coach Welch promises to push them to their limits enabling them to capture the 2013 CPC championship. 6 RJ Reynolds High School Baseball 2013 Varsity Team Coach’s Notes HUNTER ANTHONY SENIOR 4 YEAR LETTERMAN LHP,OF,1B “2012 Demon Cy Young Award winner” — Anthony enters his senior campaign with lofty expecta- tions. He led all Demon pitching categories in 2012 and Coach Welch needs even more from him in 2013…1 more year of growth…1 more year of maturity…and 1 more year full of strike-outs and wins! Anthony is also a superb outfielder and 1st baseman and really battles at the plate. The Demons will rely heavily of the left arm of Anthony to lead he Demons against their CPC foes in 2013. JUAN MONTEAGUDO SENIOR 1ST YEAR ON VARSITY 1B/OF Monteagudo has the attitude every coach wants…YES SIR! And endless energy! Monteagudo is a quick learn and is improving each day. By the end of the year, no doubt, he will find himself in the Demons starting line-up. Coach Welch hope this senior’s energy and passion rubs off on the rest of the Demons, and if it does, the Demons will find themselves holding the 2013 CPC title as CHAMPIONS! BRANDON SULLIVAN SENIOR 2 YEAR LETTERMAN LHP,1B,OF B. Sullivan drives hitters crazy with his “fool you” pitching style. He is a “strike monster” with 3 pitches…his favorite pitch being his change-up and it is superb! He is fearless on the mound and truly believes he should pitch a complete game every time he takes the mound. B. Sullivan is very versatile defensively, has great baseball instincts. B. Sullivan is almost impossible to strike-out with his “Ichiro” hitting style. Brandon will be a huge factor for the Demons in 2013 as they battle for the CPC crown. DEAN VLASIS SENIOR 4 YEAR LETTERMAN 2B,RHP Vlasis comes into 2013 with extra mass and muscle and Coach Welch hopes this will translate into power and run production and arm health. Consistency and staying healthy are the keys for Vlasis, and the Demons need it from their senior second baseman. Vlasis’s offensive and defensive success are major factors in the overall success of the 2013 RJR baseball team as they pursue the CPC title. ANDREW THOMASSON SENIOR 2 YEAR LETTERMAN 3B,LF Thomasson makes his senior debut with the Demons and brings a very competitive attitude with him. He battles at the plate and can play multiple positions in the field. Thomasson is a gritty fielder and is not afraid to throw his body in front of the ball. Coach Welch likes what he sees in Thomasson, especially when Thomasson’s bat is sending balls all over the field! No doubt, Thomasson will play a vital role in

I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

Sponsorship of the game was obtained from Crown Central Petroleum Company. A spokesman for Crown at the time, Brooks Robinson, the Hall of Fame third baseman for the Orioles, became honorary chairman of the game. The first annual Crown High School All-Star game was played in 1982 at Memorial Stadium between teams of high school seniors representing the North and the South. Growing in stature every year, the venue for the game shifted to Oriole Park at Camden Yards when it opened in 1992. In 2004, when the game lost the sponsorship of Crown, Brooks Robinson, as he had done so many times for the Orioles with a sparkling defensive play at third, saved the game. He sought out Joe Geier, a longtime friend, baseball fan, and Mount St. Joseph graduate, and the Geier Financial Group agreed to sponsor the game. Fittingly, the game was renamed the Brooks Robinson Senior High School All-Star Game. The game is usually played on a Sunday after an Orioles’ game following the conclusion of State tournament play in late May.

The purpose of the draft is to assign amateur baseball players to major league teams. The draft order is determined based on the previous season's standings, with the team possessing the worst record receiving the first pick. Eligible amateur players include graduated high school players who have not attended college, any junior or community college players, and players at four-year colleges and universities three years after first enrolling or after their 21st birthdays (whichever occurs first). From 1966-1986, a January draft was held in addition to the June draft targeting high school players who graduated in the winter, junior college players, and players who had dropped out of four-year colleges and universities. To date, there have been 1,170 Maryland players selected in the First-Year Player Drafts either from a Maryland High School (337), Maryland College (458), Non-Maryland College (357), or a Maryland amateur baseball club (18). The most Maryland selections in a year was in 1970 (38) followed by 1984 (37) and 1983 (36). The first Maryland selection was Jim Spencer from Andover High School with the 11th overall selection in the inaugural 1965 June draft.

The time has sped by to quickly as I clearly remember playing on the 1st Avery Point Championship Team in 1973, winning the Connecticut Small College Conference Championship under Coach George Greer. Defeating Stamford UCONN to clinch the championship with teammates like Pat Kelly, Jeff Kirsch, Herb Gardner, Jerry Stergio, Jay Macko and Mike Wilkinson to name a few. Playing a modest 10 game schedule that fall of 1973 started a streak of 15 consecutive CSCC Championships. When George Greer left to coach Davidson College in 1982, I left UCONN as their baseball graduate assistant to replace Coach Greer as the Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach and ultimately joining the NJCAA in 1985. This has led to 14 NJCAA New England Championships, 7 East District Championships and 7 World Series appearances. There has been 37 Professional Baseball signee’s, 3 major Leaguers -John McDonald, Rajai Davis and Pete Walker-, 180 players playing at 4 year programs including 56 to UCONN and 18 NJCAA All-Americans.
