One of the great mysteries of our contemporary culture is the intrigue of that all-American, much-maligned phenomenon, country mugic. While this mu- sical variety has been widely misunderstood, stigmatized and ridiculed by the so-called "hip" faction of the American population, the fact remains that country is one of the most popular and best-selling genres of music m the nation. This was proven most recently by the Dixie Chicks' amassing of five Grammies two weeks ago. But why is the phrase "everything but country" such a common response to the inquiry of one's taste in music? I find it hard to believe that those who give this response enjoy "everything" besides country; surely they're not grooving on free jazz, doom metal or Inuit throat singing. So why is the entire genre singled out with such distaste, as op- posed to jazz, blues, glam-rock or any other type of music? Perhaps we should make it clear what exactly we mean by "country music." Maybe the problem is that people don't actually know what country Alex Palomino/The Observer means.
