Prologue

An ominous mood blankets a desolate landscape. In the distance an approaching storm threatens to disturb the calm. The full moon rises slowly, gradually silhouetting an imposing winged figure who, wielding a terrible sword, stands like a harbinger of ruin above the stricken land. In an emphatic, menacing gesture, the figure plunges the sword into the earth. Then, as though having announced his arrival, he descends from his post to assume his new place amid a broken and unsuspecting world.

Act I: The Royal Hunting Ground

It is Siegfried’s birthday. A buoyant, carefree air prevails, as the Prince’s knights return from a successful hunt and are greeted by the Court Fool, accompanied by a serving Wench. With Siegfried’s arrival, the knights perform a swaggering, boisterous dance intended to honour their Prince. Siegfried’s mood, however, is less than receptive to their antics and, although he tries to conceal his indifference, it is clear the Prince does not feel wholly at ease in this world.

The Queen enters in a ceremonial procession and expresses to Siegfried her wish that he marry. Her insistence, however, only serves to deepen the Prince’s melancholy and reinforce the sense of estrangement he feels from court society. His friend, Benno, attempts to raise his spirits in a series of lighthearted dances with the Fool and the Wench, but they have little effect. Benno’s efforts are followed by more dances involving the knights and the Wench, which begin as mere diversions, but grow increasingly unsettling and violent.

When Benno sees a flight of swans, he urges Siegfried to follow him so that they might hunt the birds. Eager to escape the brutality and unpleasantness of the court, the Prince leaves with Benno.

Act II: The Marsh

Pursuing the swans, Siegfried is separated from Benno and finds himself alone in a mist-laden marsh. He encounters Rothbart, the menacing figure

10 from the Prologue, now in an earthly guise. Rothbart initially threatens Siegfried, but suddenly changes his demeanour by tempting him with a beautiful swan, Odette. Siegfried is captivated by the swan’s radiant and unearthly beauty and, as other swans join them in a series of dances amid the marsh’s twilit landscape, he and Odette fall in love. As they profess their love, however, Rothbart intervenes and they must part.

Intermission

Act III: The Ballroom

Amid the regal opulence of the court, Siegfried awaits the presentation of four foreign princesses, one of whom he must choose as his bride. One after another, the princesses are brought forward and unveiled by their respective ambassadors before Siegfried. The princesses, Hungarian, Russian, Spanish and Italian, all dance for Siegfried, hoping to win his approval and love, but none is successful.

Suddenly Rothbart appears. With him is another princess, a mysterious figure in black named Odile. Siegfried believes Odile to be none other than his beloved Odette and after she dances for him, he chooses her to be his wife. This unwitting betrayal of Odette brings catastrophe upon the court, which is engulfed in a flood. Siegfried is the only one to survive.

Act IV: The Lakeside

Having fled the destruction of the court, Siegfried seeks refuge by the lakeside. There, Odette appears to him, in the company of other swans. Odette forgives Siegfried for his betrayal and the promise of reconciliation shines momentarily, but Rothbart appears once again to separate the lovers. He summons forth a violent storm that scatters all in its path. Rothbart and Siegfried struggle. When the storm subsides, Odette is left alone to mourn the dead Siegfried.

national.ballet.ca 11 Musicians Say Farewell by Simone Olivero

Perhaps one of the most exciting moments of any ballet is that pause right before the curtain draws. A hush falls over the theatre as the chatter of the audience dies down and the disjointed sounds of musicians warming up in the pit go silent. In a moment, the lights will come up and the first chord will ring out to signal the start of the performance. While all eyes tend to focus on the dancers moving across the stage, a ballet would be nothing without music. Deep within the pit, the orchestra fills the theatre with rich melodies that guide the choreography and help carry out the narrative. For the orchestra at The National Ballet of Canada, this can range from classical to contemporary music with works from composers like Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky to Talbot and Glass. Guiding the dancers, the orchestra plays a vital role in bringing to life each performance. This year, The National Ballet of Canada bids farewell to three members of its illustrious orchestra.

Robert Ferguson Joining the company during the fall tour of 1976, trombone player Robert Ferguson earned a Bachelor of Music from Mount Allison University before moving to Toronto and auditioning for The National Ballet of Canada. Only 22 years old when he joined the company, he’s spent the last four decades working through the ballet’s full catalogue of music. Ferguson feels privileged to have spent his career pursuing his passion and describes the orchestra pit as a place of great camaraderie. One highlight was a magical night during the New York City tour of 1977 when the lights suddenly went out at the Metropolitan Opera during the second act of La Fille mal gardée. Wandering out into the darkness of Lincoln Square with the rest of the orchestra he realized that this was going to be so much more than an ordinary job.

Larry Toman Violist Larry Toman joined the company in 1978. Earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical performance from Purchase College in New York City (formerly the SUNY School of Performing Arts), he studied for four years under Harold Coletta, a renowned violist from the Bronx. Toman later moved to Toronto where he joined The National Ballet of Canada. He considers his time with the company a career highlight, touring through Europe in the late 1980s as well as through eastern and western Canada. In 1982, Toman recorded with Glenn Gould as solo viola on his last album, Glenn Gould Conducts. If he had to name one ballet score as his favourite, it would be Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet for the sheer beauty of the music.

Filip Tomov Before immigrating to Canada, violinist Filip Tomov earned a Master’s of Arts in violin performance from Sofia University in Bulgaria. In the years following his studies, he played with the Sofia State Philharmonic, Magdeburg and Leipzig Symphony Orchestra in Germany and the Orchestra Nacional de Cuba in Havana. In 1981, Tomov joined The National Ballet of Canada during a tour of western Canada under the late music director, George Crum. While he has enjoyed the full range of music the ballet has exposed him to, it’s the classical ballets — particularly the work of composers Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky — that he’ll hold dear in his memory. Next up, Tomov plans to trade his violin in for a pair of sunglasses as he hits the beaches of the Caribbean.

Throughout her career she developed a close creative partnership with Rudolf Nureyev and often performed with him. His creative range as a choreographer reflects his eclectic musical interests, command of diverse movement idioms and commitment to working collaboratively with artists from other disciplines. Mr. Kudelka is renowned for distinctive versions of such classics as The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and Cinderella, all signature works of The National Ballet of Canada where he served as Artistic Director (1996-2005). Equally, Mr. Kudelka excels in making smaller-scaled dances that while outwardly abstract are rich in psychological implication and human drama. Mr. Kudelka was born in Newmarket, Ontario and trained at Canada’s James Kudelka, O.C. National Ballet School. He began choreographing as a student and continued Choreographer throughout his dancing years with the National Ballet (1972-1981) and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens (1981-1990). The $100 million Soaring Campaign continues to fuel momentum for The National Ballet of Canada, with investments creating new opportunities for production-building, touring, community engagement and artistic development. Together, donations to Soaring will elevate the company’s stature internationally and bring the best of ballet to Canada.

To date, Soaring has raised $81.5 million, an incredible testament to the generosity of our donors and their commitment to the National Ballet. These investments are helping position the National Ballet at the forefront of dance, and our artists and productions are inspiring more people than ever before.

One important pillar of Karen Kain’s vision has been to increase international touring opportunities. In 2012, the National Ballet began a new era of international touring, spurred by Karen’s focus on nurturing and building one of the best rosters of dancers in the world and by commissioning productions that the world wants to see. These tours would not have been possible without the support of donors and friends in Canada, the U.S. and England.

Already announced for the 2017/18 season are performances in Paris, London, San Francisco and Hamburg. The experiences such engagements provide – international exposure, working with new artists, access to new audiences – are invaluable for the artists of the National Ballet and for the organization as a whole, particularly at a time of such significant creative growth.

To our generous partners who are enabling these exciting opportunities, thank you for helping the National Ballet to soar.
