Appleby Magna Church Flower Festival SEPTEMBER 2013 Over the recent Bank Holiday weekend St Michael & All Angel’s Church at hosted a Flower Festival entitled ‘A Year In The Church’. Inside this issue: Beautiful flower displays illustrated celebrations such as Christmas, Easter and Harvest. The event drew many local villagers from Appleby itself but also the surrounding villages. Valuation Day – Methodist Church The above venue will host a Valuation Day running from 12.00pm – 4.00pm on Saturday October 5 th . If you have ever wondered how much a household relic (no humans valued) is worth then pop along and let Vanessa Savage of Hanson’s give you an estimate. Estimates are free but donations for the Church are appreciated.

Light lunches and teas available.

Please also note that on Sunday October 20th at 6:00pm , there will be a Songs Of Praise led by Paul Leddington Wright ( Conductor BBC Songs Of Praise ) , at Oakthorpe Methodist Church .

Measham Leisure Centre: -

Bums & Tums Class The above class led by Kelly Alldread runs every Tuesday between 10.30am – 11.30am . Just turn up, no booking required.

Tai Chi Class Tai Chi runs on Tuesday evenings between 6.30pm – 7.30pm with Yip. No booking required – just turn up.

Table Tennis Drop In Club Run on Wednesday between 7.00pm – 8.00pm for adults . Cost is £2.00 each. The Junior Drop In Club is on Friday evenings between 7.00 -pm – 9.00pm and cost is £1.50. No booking required, just turn up and have a game.

50 Plus Health Pilates Class Run every Thursday between 11.30am – 12.30pm . Cost is £3.80 each or £2.70 for Leisure Link Members. Just turn up!

NB: On Saturday evenings the Leisure Centre operates FREE bar hire for parties/occasions. For further details call 01530 274061.

Appleby Magna Film Society The above is a not for profit members’ club run by volunteers. It is based at Appleby Magna Church Hall on Church Street and the October film showing is scheduled for the 11 th October matinee 2,30pm and evening 8.00pm . The film is a psychological thriller called ‘ Side Effects’ starring Channing Taturm and Jude Law. Please look in next month’s ‘Messenger’ for details of November’s showing.

Autumn Bazaar – St Laurence A date in your diary is Saturday 9 th November between 12.00pm – 3.00pm when the above event takes place. Monies raised will go to the Redgate Animal Sanctuary and to Measham Guides.

There will be refreshments, raffle, have a go crafts, face painting, children’s pocket money stall, biscuit decorating and much more. A number of trade stalls will be in attendance including Pampered Chef and The Body Shop. Jewellery and cake stalls will also be available to peruse.

It is an opportunity for just 50p entry adults and 20p children to go along and support the two charities whilst picking up some Christmas gifts.

UK Coal Minorca Community Fund Update The Minorca Community Fund Sub Committee reports the initial £20,000 allocation of funds for community projects as been allocated.

Projects completed are as follows:_

Projects that are imminent: - village road sign, Snarestone Pavilion mains water, Measham Bowls club new doors and Friends of St Charles School, Measham outdoor project.

Projects with longer term completion :- St Peter’s Church main water and Swepstone and Newton Burgoland broadband survey.

Additional funds are promised over the next 3 years and community groups from Measham, Snarestone, Swepstone and Newton Burgoland are encouraged to apply with suitable project applications. St Laurence – Church Bells 100 th Birthday It is a 100 years since 8 bells were hung in Measham Church Tower; prior to this there had only been four bells. The hanging of the bells in 1913 was a cause for great celebration and had 200 people in attendance at the dedication presided over by the suffragen Bishop Of Derby. On Friday evening the 11 th October a peal will be rung and Saturday 12 th October the Church will be open from 9.30am with an exhibition of the history of the church bells looking at their story past and present. The Loughborough hand bell ringers will give a demonstration and ringers will visit from other towers.

Other celebration activities include a ‘Guess The Weight Of The Bell, tea, coffee and cakes and then from 11.45am – 12.45pm on the Saturday 12 th there is a special service.

Organisers invite you to come along to all or part of the celebrations.

MeashamTownswomen’s Guild The Guild meet every second Monday of the month at Measham Village Hall on Queen Street. Meetings commence at 7.00pm . The Guild invite you to come along as a guest to join in the friendship and fun of the organisation for just 20p.

The next scheduled meeting is Monday 14 th October when speakers Ros and Maureen Barber talk about ‘ Feathers and Fascinations’.

Volunteer Befriending – Alzheimer’s Society If you have time to befriend someone with dementia (Volunteers required in the Measham locality) and make a difference to someone’s life then please contact Suna Tilley(Befriending Manager) at the Alzheimer’s Society on 0116 2311113.

Harvest Festival Time – St Laurence October 20 th is Harvest Festival time at St Laurence Church. There will be an all age service at 9.30am and then a special harvest Songs Of Praise at 6.00pm . Parishioners are invited to attend and join in the singing of traditional harvest hymns. Gifts of non -perishable food are welcome for the Marlene Reid Centre to be distributed to those in need. Tea and coffee will be available after the service.

Council Tax Support Scheme 2014 -15 In April of this year the Government abolished Council Tax Benefit and replaced it with a local Council Tax support scheme. Due to reduced Government Funding almost everyone who received Council Tax Benefit(excluding the elderly) now as to pay something towards their Council Tax. In the transition year of 2013 – 14 North West District Council were able to keep payments down due to ‘transition’ funding but that funding for the forthcoming financial year is not available. This means that the Council needs to look again and redress their support scheme. Before making any decisions they want to hear your views and invite you to complete an online questionnaire atwww.nwleics.gov.uk/pages/council tax support consultation. Grant Funding – Community Groups & Organisations NWLDC ‘One Off ‘ grant fund is open to community organisations/groups within the district to apply for £450 maximum to fund a project or initiative.

Deadlines are September 30 th and 31 st December 2013.

Royal Baby Competition Results The answer to where King George 1 st was born and indeed what date he arrived was Osnabruck in Germany on 28 th May 1660.

Sylvia Davis of North Walk was our winner. Congratulations to Sylvia who won a commemorative tin of shortbread to mark the occasion of The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge’s son, Prince George.
