The South African who wrote the English lyrics for ‘Les Miserables’ talks to Marianne Gray in London HERBERT Kretzmer has very little to be miserable about. Apart from living a fascinating life, which started in Kroonstad then went via Paris and New York to London, he also wrote the English lyrics for Les Miserables, the world’s longest-running musical, which is now coming out as an all-star film. For the film, he has written the lyrics for an additional song, Suddenly, which has been nominated for an Oscar as Best Original Song. We meet in his elegant townhouse in Kensington, London, to talk about the film of the musical which is based on Victor Hugo’s novel set in 19th-century France. The musical has been running worldwide for 27 years, has been seen by 60 million people and shows no signs of flagging. The film stars two Australian leading men —Russell Crowe as the relentless Inspector Javert and Hugh Jackman as the hunted ex convict Jean Valjean — and the gorgeous Anne Hathaway as the hapless Fantine, mother of Cosette, who sells her hair to raise money. Hathaway actually had her beautiful long hair shorn to the scalp during one of the movie’s possibly most emotional sequences. Kretzmer only went on set twice during the shoot. He says he is now a “spare wheel”. “Nobody wants a writer round once his work is done,” he laughs. “He’s just being a tourist.” At 87, and with an OBE (Order of the British Empire), a chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and an honorary doctorate from Rhodes University (which he dropped out of when a student), he still is totally on the ball as he chats, in a soft South African accent, about his extraordinary life. -

A Few Words About the Rest of the Program: Tonight/Somewhere from West Side Story Words by Stephen Sondheim/ Music by Leonard Bernstein/arr. Terry Winch & Bob Krogstad Set as a mid-century, urban Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story explores the rivalry between two New York street gangs and the forbidden romance that blossoms in spite of it. Bernstein wrote the work in 1957 and it was nominated for 6 Tony Awards that year. If not for The Music Man, it might have won them all. This is the Moment from Jekyll & Hyde Words by Leslie Bricusse/Music by Frank Wildhorn/arr. Bob Krogstad The musical version of the legend of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was premiered in 1997. Frank Wildhorn composed the score and the book was taken from the original Robert Louis Stevenson by Leslie Bricusse. “This is the Moment” comes at the crucial point in the story when Dr. Jekyll is about to test the fateful formula on himself. JAC Redford Also from the pen of Frank Wildhorn and also from the year 1997, The Scarlet Pimpernel depicts the Reign of Terror and the French Revolution. “Into the Fire” comes early in Act I when Percy, Armand and others make plans to rescue some of the doomed aristocrats from the guillotine. By foregrounding the role of the audience in creating meaning and by minimizing the “show” as a coherent work, I reconnect musicals to their roots in comedy by way of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of carnival and reduced laughter. The audiences I study are kids, queers, and collectors, an alliterative set of people whose gender identities and expressions all depart from or fall outside of the normative binary. Focusing on these audiences, whose musical comedy fandom is widely acknowledged but little studied, I follow Raymond Knapp and Stacy Wolf to demonstrate that musical comedy provides a forum for identity formation especially for these problematically gendered audiences. ii The dissertation of Samuel Dworkin Baltimore is approved. -

Rusty Air in Carolina (2006) PREMIERE OF WORK: Winston-Salem, North Carolina, 20 May 2006; Stevens Center; Winston-Salem Symphony; Robert Moody, conductor THESE PERFORMANCES MARK THE PSO PREMIERE APPROXIMATE DURATION: 14 minutes INSTRUMENTATION: piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, English horn, two clarinets, bass clarinet, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, harp, piano and strings. Mason Bates brings not only his own fresh talent to the concert hall but also the musical sensibilities of a new generation — he is equally at home composing “for Lincoln Center,” according to his web site (www.masonbates.com), as being the “electronica artist Masonic® who moved to the San Francisco Bay Area from New York City, where he was a lounge DJ at such venues as The Frying Pan — the floating rave ship docked off the pier near West 22nd Street.” Bates was born in Philadelphia in 1977 and started studying piano with Hope Armstrong Erb at his childhood home in Richmond, Virginia. He earned degrees in both English literature and music composition in the joint program of Columbia University and the Juilliard School, where his composition teachers included John Corigliano, David Del Tredici and Samuel Adler, and received his doctorate in composition from the University of California, Berkeley in 2008 as a student of Edmund Campion and Jorge Lidermann. Bates was Resident Composer with the California Symphony from 2008 to 2011, Project San Francisco Artist-in-Residence with the San Francisco Symphony in 2011-2012, and Composer of the Year with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in 2012-2013; he began a continuing residency with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in September 2010. -

CITATION FOR HERBERT KRETZMER Honorary graduand, Rhodes University, 7 April 2011 By Professor Paul Maylam When the English version of the classic French musical, Les Miserables, opened in London in 1985, one or two critics wrote it off, expecting it to be dropped in no time. Over 25 years later it is still showing in London’s West End – the longest-running musical in history. The songs for this English production were written by Herbert Kretzmer – songs which firmly established his reputation as a lyricist – so much so that his songs have become stage staples in the UK. Where were the foundations laid for this illustrious song-writing career? Perhaps as a small child growing up in Kroonstad, where he was born, the son of Lithuanian immigrant parents – hearing the family’s domestic worker singing as she laboured – he has a powerful memory of her “sweet African song” ringing in his ears; and remembers, too, the songs of black convict workers digging up part of a street with pick-axes. Or perhaps the foundations were laid here at Rhodes where he studied for a while in the mid-1940s. A little research has revealed that here was a budding talent. Early in May 1945 Herbert produced songs for a campus production – a composition called “Moonlight in Hindustan” earned good reviews, while another song, “James James”, rapidly became a Rhodes classic. This was just a few days before World War Two finally ended. Rhodes had its own V-E Day celebrations, which did indeed go on through the night and next day – Herbert one of the main providers of music for the occasion. -
