Members Rides. Picture on page 2 I thought it might be interesting to send in some details on my latest acquisition. This is a 1989 Honda RC 30 made famous on the race track, being the superbike world champion in both 1988 and 89. It’s interesting that it does about 130 in first gear which makes it really tough in traffic. This particular bike is original with 17,000 km on the clock, it was destined to be delivered in Germany but ended up in South Africa and stayed unregistered until 1990, it came to Australia in the mid-90s then headed off to Spain and then returned again. This picture was taken at Little Hartley so it ran comfortably for over 350 km on the weekend. We end up staying at Colin’s inn in Hartley Vale a great place by the way if anyone is interested, and some great windy roads around there, if you go down to the dam just outside Lithgow.

------

Comments from Mick Darchy With smart phones having data access virtually everyone should have an email account. If anyone needs assistance setting up an email account I'm more than happy to do it for them, (Hotmail is free) so that we can receive the clatter by email. I certainly would support such a move as it would make publishing the magazine so much easier. This whole email and the one above was done through speech to text, on my phone, I did not have to type any of it so not being able to type shouldn't be a problem for people receiving emails. ED: A number of members do not own a mobile phone.

He also suggested a donation to their charity, a figure of $ 250 donation was decided by club, members vote unanimous. Dennis Quinlan made a suggestion to use the club magazine cover page which is photo paper for photos where the list of committee names etc is printed and move to the non photo paper. Allan Smith had a call from Jack ex editor and it was noted the clatter use to go on the web the Monday before club meeting, Allan proposed we should adopt this procedure 2nd Kim Fleming. Also noted is the duplication again of the Illawarra branch events, this takes valuble space in the magazine. Chris O’Carroll received email from Dennis Quinlan regarding the import and export of vehicles for asbestos, the web address https://www.border.gov.au/Busi/cargo-support-trade-and-goods/importing-goods/importing-motor-vehicles Is a government site which explains what they want to inspect and it can be quite destructive to a bike you may have imported.

He went on to tell us a bit timing a Sunbeam and suggested that having the time ½ inch before Top dead centre was a good way to break your leg. Allan also read a few remarks on motorcycle safety and courtesy from a 1920’s AJS publication. “Obey the law not only the letter but in spirit, and be courteous to all other road users. Never pass by a stranded motor-cyclist without asking whether you cannot assist.” “Should you or somebody else receive a severe abrasion or cut, remember clear petrol is a marvellous antiseptic and will ward off the danger of lock-jaw” Regalia: Name Badges – Order now and receive at next meeting so people know who you are. Contact Marie if you need anything. Past Events: Mid-Week Run. 1st Wednesday of the month. 2nd August. Lunch at the Gerringong with 26 bikes 14 on club plates. A great ride lead by Ron Foye. Tortoise Ride Saturday 15 July. Great turnout of 24 members for the Tortoise ride from Wollongong-Dapto-Marshall Mount- Calderwood-Jamberoo and return. Population of Jamberoo was swelled substantially during the afternoon tea stop! Unfortunately there were some Douglas cable issues during the stop and luckily Ian was able to get a ride back to Wollongong to collect his support vehicle. Majority of the bikes were on historic registration with a roughly equal split of English and Japanese machines and few European marques represented as well. Dam Ride 19 July, 27 people head off to Cataract Dam for BBQ Lunch for a $2.00 contribution. 7 bikes on club plates and 5 people in cars. Coffee ride Monday 24th July Coffee ride meeting point was at the Green Room South Beach Wollongong. Twelve members enjoyed the venue and the great weather for a winter season ride. Again, good to see club members riding some distance to attend. Sunday 30th. Nineteen bikes and two pillion passengers made the run from Key Batteries to Kangaroo Valley via Macquarie Pass and Fitzroy Falls. Good to see Sydney based members ride down to the Illawarra for a day out and bring their visitor friends along. Inevitably given the size of the riding group and the busy nature of the area on a fine Sunday the group became fragmented over the course of the ride and return journey. In future we may have to consider a marshalling system, particularly in areas where people may not have ridden previously. Off Road Day 16 July Two keen riders showed up for this ride but wisely decided not to ride when the heavens open and rain came down. Future Events: Tortoise Ride Saturday 19th August Keys Batteries 1pm. Dam Ride Wednesday 16th August. Heading to Fitzroy Falls for BBQ Lunch. Leaves Key Batteries at 10am. Raffle: Raffle Winners, Ian Richardson, John Morris, Ian Hunt, Uncle Allan Graham and Mick Fry. Programme Officer: Brian Martin brought in two Jawa’s that he has completely restored over a few years, basically he did all the mechanical work including lacing the wheels and making the engine mounting plates after several templates were made from craft wood. He mentioned that there were a few skinned knuckles and some colourful word said during the filing of the steel engine mounts. Brain has a great passion for speedway and its history and left us with these profound words “It is easy to ride fast but very hard to ride quick”

Clyno Motorcycles

Clyno was founded in 1909 by two cousins, Frank and Ailwyn Smith, at Thrapston, Northamptonshire, to produce a variable speed drive for motorcycles, using a pulley with inclined faces. The Clyno name is derived from the word 'inclined'. They rented a small workshop in Thrapston at 5/- per week and first worked at the business part time only. The pulley, adjustable by means of two inclined cam faces, one on the adjustable flange and the other on the adjusting collar, filled a need amongst motor cyclists and sufficient orders were soon received to necessitate the partners devoting their whole time to the business and eventually obtaining extra help. The pulleys sold at 12/6d each, bored to suit any make of Motor Cycle engine. A point was made of invariably dispatching orders the same day as received. 1910 Early in this year the partners thoughts turned to the manufacture of complete Motor Cycles and a prototype was duly built, using Chater Lea frame fittings and Stevens engines, made by the Stevens Motor Manufacturing Company Limited, . It was a belt driven 350c.c. machine of simple construction. A few of these were sold locally. In these early days successful participation in Motor Cycle Trials was felt to be the best method of advertising. Later in 1910 a more powerful machine was built utilising the 5/6h.p. V-twin Stevens Engine, mounted in a long, low (for those days) frame. This machine was run in the quarterly trials, also in the M.C.C. London-Edinburgh and London-Exeter trials. Its low build, light weight (under 200 lbs.) large engine and high gear ratio made it a very pleasant machine to handle. It was the forerunner of the very successful machine of later years, even in its belt driven form it was capable of a good performance with a sidecar. Meantime the orders placed with the Stevens Motor manufacturing Company, resulted in a visit of their representative to Thrapston, this visit being the prelude to negotiations for the purchase of the Stevens concern, which was in Voluntary liquidation. This purchase was eventually completed and on 15th October 1910 the business was transferred from Thrapston to Wolverhampton, and for a time was carried on under the names of The Clyno Engineering Company, and The Stevens Manufacturing Company. 1911 The limitation of a single fixed gear and belt drive were apparent in 1910, and with the increased manufacturing facilities at Wolverhampton, a two speed, chain driven machine was evolved and it is thought to be the first to enclose chains in pressed aluminium cases. The question of a suitable sidecar frame was given careful attention, hitherto sidecar frames were very light flimsy affairs, clipped to the Motor Cycle frame, generally in three places, they were quite unsuited to strenuous trials and other use. A very robust sidecar frame, attached to the Motor Cycle in four places by taper plugs secured into appropriate sockets, solidly brazed to the Motor Cycle frame, was made, this design remained virtually unaltered for many years. It was imitated by all and sundry. 1912 During this year the Clyno Motor Cycle Detachable and Interchangeable wheel was introduced and fitted, this invention first fitted to Clyno Machines, was one of the most important developments in Motor cycling history. In 1912, the company sold a version of its sidecar machine for use as a commercial delivery van. The basic price of the machine was £81.10s.0d, the body was extra and designed according to individual purchaser's requirements. The motorcycle could deliver 5-6hp. and sales of the product were very high. The policy of running in all important trials, not only in Britain, but also abroad, was persisted in, with marked success. 1913 Mr W. Comery joined the firm as Chief Designer and immediately set about redesigning the machine using basically the same 5/6h.p. engine but substituting a 3 speed gear box and an entirely new frame. This machine was very successful and easily held its own against increasing competition. In 1913 a light, simple and cheap solo Motor Cycle, and a 250c.c single cylinder, 2 stroke machine was designed. This machine had a 2 speed gear and belt drive, and was novel, in that the engine and gear box were of unit construction, chains being entirely absent. It was one of the first machines to be sold completely equipped with lamps, horn and number plates, ready for the road at an all in price. This was exhibited at the 1913 Motor Cycle show, being very successful and sold in large numbers. 1915 After an anxious time early in the year, the issuing of War Contracts relieved the situation somewhat, and the manufacture of a Motor Cycle combination with machine gun attached was developed in conjunction with Messrs’ Vickers Ltd. It was known as the Vickers-Clyno machine gun motor cycle outfit, and together with the ancillary motor cycle machine gun ammunition carriers, were manufactured in large numbers. 1916 The product of the factory was still primarily the machine gun outfits, together with a number of the two stroke solo motor cycles for Army use. During the First World War, Clyno signed an agreement with the Russian War Commission at the Savoy Hotel in London for the supply of solo and combination machines for the Imperial Russian Army. During the war large numbers of heavy motorcycle combinations were produced for both the British and Russian armies. They consisted of mobile machine gun units, ammunition carriers and solo machines. During 1918 and 1919 Clyno also built a number of ABC Dragonfly aero engines. A new motorcycle, the highly acclaimed 'Spring 8' with a top speed of 50m.p.h. was launched in 1919 at the Olympia show. Unfortunately it would be two years before the machine went into production. In 1920 the post-war motorcycle market collapsed. At the time, large numbers of cheap ex-W.D. machines were available. To compound the problem, there were also shortages of materials, which didn’t help production, and last but not least, the Russians failed to pay for the military motorcycles they had received during the war. As a result the company's financial backers withdrew, and the Clyno Engineering Company went into liquidation. Rebirth Frank Smith very much wanted to produce cars, and with this in mind he formed the Clyno Engineering Company (1922) Limited with a capital of £100,000. Frank’s father, William Smith was chairman, and Frank became managing director. Initially both cars and motorcycles were produced, but by the autumn of 1923 motorcycle production had ended. The new company stated that no Clyno machines would be displayed at the 1923 Motor Cycle Show.

The DUNGOG DOODLE

Over twenty years ago Jack Martin organized the original Dungog ride and it has continued ever since except one year it went to Gloucester.

This year we set off from the BP service station at Asquith in perfect weather, not cold but very crisp.

There were nine of us all told and a very quiet run up the Old Pacific Highway to Kulnura for a pit stop and a cup of coffee at the service station.

From there we continued on to Wollombi for a catch up stop and then on through to Cessnock and Branxton for lunch.

Off over the Hunter River and through the open countryside to Patterson where we visited one of our advertisers, here we were provided with tea and cakes and shown through their establishment. They have a good stock of Norton and Triumph parts and at reasonable prices, so if you need parts give them a ring (Their add is in the Clatter)

We arrived at Dungog about 4.00pm where we met up with Dave Smith and his son in law from Tamworth.

Saturday night dinner at the Royal Hotel was excellent; most of us had an early night.

Sunday after a breakfast in a little café down the street we packed up and set off for Singleton, on the way one of our riders had an altercation with a wild duck, no one was hurt but both had a bad scare.

Singleton Main Street was closed for a fair or markets so we had a bit of trouble finding our way through.

The ride back up the Putty road was quite pleasant, to the Blue Gum Café where we stopped for lunch and then home.

This was a very nice week-end with good weather and good friends, I am glad that I went and wish to thank the few participants who went, why don’t more of you members avail yourselves of the opportunity to attend these events.

Occasional Comments

In the shed this month, I am trying the old Triumph racer on E85 fuel to see how it runs, I have it on my old settings for Methanol, but seems a bit rich and will take a bit of fiddling to get a reasonable mixture, I am hoping for cooler running if I get to Broadford next year. The Kawasaki is back together after Broadford and we will have to see how it behaves with the work done on it.

Went on a Velocette club ride 22/7/17, it was a bit frosty start to the day, but warmed up to a nice day and with a gentlemanly start time of 10:30am a good ride though the hills up to Colo for a coffee and then back via Kurrajong and the quiet roads in the lowlands of Cornwallis to McGraths Hill pub for lunch. It’s great to be able to ride in the depths of winter and with 6 Velo’s and a Honda it was a very pleasant ride covering a bit over 100km at a slower pace as we had a rigid MAC and one rider with problems with bumps and a P plate rider, nonetheless when I got home I was really happy with the run, all the bikes had behaved and it was one of those rides that just makes you glad you have made the effort. The Velocette club has a reciprocal ride arrangement with the CEMCC, so you can attend.

The historic log book scheme is about to finish in October and I believe the RMS is asking the participating clubs for feedback. For mine, I think it’s a pretty good scheme allowing people a fair bit of freedom and taking a lot of the responsibility for policing the scheme off the clubs and back onto the individual. I don't have any issue with the 60 days allowed under the scheme and never get close to using them.

The Sydney meeting had its first try at the new venue of Dundas Sports and Recreation club, it all seems good for the meetings and if you want a feed before the meeting, the restaurant is good if a bit slow.

I recently took a ride on the Old Pacific Highway to Brooklyn and noticed that in some corners the armco now has a second flat piece under the curved piece to stop motorcycles and riders sliding under the top section. It could save some nasty injuries to riders.

I went to Nabiac Swap meeting for the first time this year, there is certainly a lot of motorcycle parts on display there, but not much that took my eye. I was there to sell and sold quite a few parts which was good although there seemed to be just as much in the trailer on the way home as there was on the way there. What I find at swap meets nowadays is that they are largely attended by swap meet zombies, that is people that will walk around with their hands in their pockets and without really looking at what is on sale, it’s rare now for many people to dive into the boxes to search for those hidden gems.

It's sad to see that there will be no show day or Illawarra Rally this year due to various issues in getting enough of the right sort of help from club members. The show day in particular is a window into the club activities for the general public and does a great job of promoting the club. Let's hope both these events will be staged again next year.

Lunch at a Dam

Oh boy, certainly different to an outfit. Yes, you still have to lean a bit when pushing into corners but if you lifted one of those rear wheels up then I am guessing you are already in big trouble.
