From Rabbi Meszler: Parashat Bereishit - In Need of a Pause

What does the all-powerful, all-knowing, infinite Creator of the universe need with a day of rest?

Let’s face it, the entire idea of Shabbat in the first Torah portion, B’reishit, seems absurd. God worked for six days, and then God rested. Why does God need a rest?

A Moment of Music: Oy Tate, Siz Gut (Oy, Father, it's Good)!

The month of Cheshvan is sometimes called Mar Cheshvan (Bitter Cheshvan) due to its lack of holidays. As a cantor, I find nothing bitter at all about a four-week period to catch a breath and enjoy the weekly rhythm of work and Shabbat. Indeed, I rejoice yearly when Cheshvan rolls around.

Here is a celebratory tune befitting the month! It's a traditional klezmer piece called "Oy Tate, Siz Gut" (Oy, Father, it's Good!), arranged and recorded by yours truly and a few Listen Here bandmates up in Canada. Enjoy, dance, and go crazy!
