29th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Our readings today are wonderfully consoling and wildly challenging. If we take them to heart, they just might change our lives. For they should call us to profound gratitude for all that God has done for us and inspire us to live lives of thanksgiving and obe- dience to Him in response to His overwhelming love and mercy.

In the Reading, from Mark, Jesus tells us in His own words how we can thank Him and how our COLLECTION FOR OCT. 14 lives can reflect greatness in His eyes — we can imi- tate Him. He tells us, “Whoever wishes to be great REGULAR OFFERTORY among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to Loose Cash & Checks $833.00 be first among you will be the slave of all. INTERESTEDINTERESTED ININ BECOMIBECOMINGNG AA MEMBERMEMBER OFOF THE CATHEDRAL OF ? Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. A person becomes a member of the through Baptism. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Confor- mation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain mini- mum requirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how the Cathedral of Saint Patrick looks upon them in relation to parish membership.

 ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eu- charistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance enve- lopes are the primary way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, parishioners must place their enve- lopes in the collection basket every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial contribution. If a parishioner gives online or prefers to place cash in the offertory basket, an empty Mass attendance envelope should still be placed in the basket with "I attended Mass" checked.

 RECEIPT OF THE SACRAMENTS. The third & fourth precept of the Church states the faithful must ensure prepara- tion for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation at least once a year, and the reception of Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter season (CCC #2042) and join in fast and abstinence during Lent.

 SUPPORT OF THE CHURCH. The fifth precept of the Church states that the faithful have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to their

abilities in a regular, identifiable and meaningful way.

HOW TO REGISTER AT THE CATHEDRAL

To register as a parishioner of the Cathedral, please visit www.stpatricks.org/newcomers/register, or scan the QR code to the right, and complete the simple online form. Alternatively, paper regis- tration forms may be found at each of the entrances to the Cathedral.

WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS BANNS OF MARRIAGE

The following people recently joined our parish: Couples preparing for the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony:

Joseph DiMuzio & Joanna DiBenedetto Kathrina Canillo & Steven Romenick Wedding: October 27, 2018

Renee Roberson & Paul Schmoll Wedding: November 3, 2018

Anna Ferree & Mark Seals Wedding: November 17, 2018 SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, October 21: St. Laura of Saint St. Laura Montoya Upegui was born in Jericó, on May 26, 1874. When she was two years old, her father was killed, leaving her family in poverty. To financially support her family, she became an elementary school teacher. She also began to work with the Indians of the Uraba and Sarare regions. During this time, she felt called to the religious life, and wanted to join the Discalced . However, her passion to bring the Gospel to the Indians lead her in a different direction and, together with four other women, she founded a reli- gious order dedicated to evangelizing the native peoples called the “Missionaries of Mary Immaculate and Saint Catherine of Siena.” The rule of her new order was contemplation merged with action. Monday, October 22: St. John Paul II—Pope Optional Memorial Pope St. John Paul II was born Karol J. Wojtyla in Wadowice, Poland on May 18, 1920. John Paul enrolled in a school for drama in 1938, but he ended up working in a quarry and chemical plant when the Nazis invaded Poland and shut down the university. He began to secretly take seminary courses in 1942 when he felt called to the priesthood. John Paul was ordained and became a professor of moral philosophy. On July 4, 1958, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Cracow, and on January 13, 1964 he was made Archbishop and later Cardinal of that archdiocese. Following the death of Pope John Paul I, John Paul II was elected on October 16, 1978. Only a few years into his pontificate, John Paul survived an attempted assassination by Mehmet Ali Agca. During his reign, he made 95 pastoral visits abroad, in addi- tion to 142 in Italy. John Paul penned 14 encyclicals, 13 exhortations, 11 constitutions, and 42 apostolic letters. Tuesday, October 23: St. John of Capistrano—Priest Optional Memorial St. John was born in Capistrano, Italy in 1385. After working as a lawyer, John was named Governor of Perugia by King Ladislas of Naples. He was imprisoned during a battle with the Malatestas, at which time John experienced a con- version to refocus his life on God. In 1416, he entered the Franciscan novitiate where he studied under St. Bernadine of Siena and developed a strong devotion to the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. He was ordained in 1420. Following ordi- nation, he made frequent travels throughout Europe to preach repentance, regularly drawing large crowds. For a brief time, he was successful in bringing unity between the Greek and Armenian churches. Pope Callistus III commissioned John to lead a crusade against the Turks. After experiencing victory in battle, he passed away three months later.

Wednesday, October 24: St. Anthony Mary Claret—Bishop Optional Memorial St. Anthony was born in Sallent, Spain in 1807. He wished to enter the Jesuit order, but his poor health pre- vented him from doing so. Anthony was ordained a priest instead, and he began to deliver missions and retreats throughout Catalonia and the Canary Islands. He preached devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In 1849, he established the Congregation of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Claretians), and the Apostolic Training Institute of the (Claretian ). Anthony was named Archbishop of Santiago in Cuba, where he served from 1850-1857. He returned to Spain, and served as Confessor to Queen Isabella. He participated in the First Vatican Council, where he was a strong defender of papal infallibility. Thursday, October 25: St. John Houghton—Martyr St. John Houghton was born in Essex, England around the year 1847. He graduated from the University of Cambridge, but then decided to become a priest. John joined the Carthusian Order, and eventually became Prior of the Carthusian Charter- house of London. John opposed the Acts of Succession and Supremacy instituted by King Henry VIII, which lead to his ar- rest. He was released from prison, but was arrested again when he refused to take the Oath of Supremacy which would rec- ognize Henry VIII as head of the Church in England. John asked for an exemption, but was sentenced to death in April of 1535. John, together with four companions, were dragged through the streets and executed by being hanged, drawn, and quar- tered. As the executioner cut into his chest to rip out his heart, John prayed: “O Jesus, what wouldst thou do with my heart?"

Friday, October 26: St. Alfred the Great—Confessor St. Alfred was born in 849; the fifth son of King Ethelwulf of Essex. According to tradition, he made a jour- ney to in 853 where he became the godson of Pope Leo IV. Upon the death of King Ethelwulf in 858, his brothers Ethelbald, Ethelbert, and Ethelred each assumed the throne but passed away in rapid succession. In 871, Alfred became King of Wessex. His reign was plagued by frequent conflict with the Danes, but he managed to defeat his opponents each time. Alfred helped grow the Church in England. He personally trans- lated numerous Christian works into Anglo-Saxon. Alfred is credited with the creation of trials by jury.

Saturday, October 27: St. Frumentius—Bishop and Confessor St. Frumentius was born in Tyre, Lebanon in the early 300s. While traveling by sea as a young child, his boat was shipwrecked near Ethiopia. He was taken to the Ethiopian royal court in Azuma where he was raised in the court of the king and served as secretary. Following the king’s death, Frumentius tem- porarily governed until King Aizan assumed the throne. Frumentius then traveled to Alexandria, where he was ordained and consecrated a bishop by St. Athanasius. He then returned to Ethiopia and helped spread the Catholic Faith. Frumentius is regarded as the “Father of Ethiopia.”
