In Memoriam Join the Lettermen’s Association in offering our sympathies to the friends and families of the following Mustangs who have passed away:

Bobby Carpenter (1943-2020)- Bobby Carpenter was a graduate of John Tyler High School and earned a Bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University where he dominated as a double scholarship player for Baseball and Men’s Basketball. Carpenter was an active member of the SMU Lettermen’s Association and served on the Board of Directors. Bob was an avid supporter of all things SMU especially SMU Football and SMU Basketball. Bob also worked at Sewell for over 40 years.

Hayden Fry (1929-2019)- Hayden was a legendary coach for the SMU Football. Fry led SMU to three bowl appearances, the 1963 Sun Bowl, 1966 , and the 1968 Bluebonnet Bowl. Under Fry's leadership, SMU won its first Southwest Conference Title in 18 years in 1966. Fry was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003 and has received numerous other honors for his college football contributions, including induction into the North Texas Athletic Hall of Fame and the 2012 Paul "Bear" Bryant Award, given by the American Heart Association.

Gerald Jensen (1926-2020)- Gerald was born in Dallas on 5-23-1926 and passed away on 1-2-2020. He grew up in Dallas and attended Woodrow Wilson High School. While at Woodrow he played Football, Basketball, and Baseball. After graduating from high school he joined the famous Texas 36th. Infantry Division and served during WW III. He returned to Dallas after the war in 1946 and thanks to the GI Bill enrolled at SMU and graduated in 1951. He walked on to the freshman team in 1947 and his mastery of abusing baseballs was immediately noticed. After scrimmaging against the varsity team and hitting homeruns he was soon in the varsity lineup. During his time at SMU he was named team captain, chosen to the All Southwest Conference team, and selected as an All-American.

Ronnie Morris (1934-2020)-Ronnie had many scholarship offers as a senior but chose SMU to play basketball and attend Perkins School of Theology. Morris has a dream of becoming a Methodist minister and attending SMU allowed him to do so. In his sophomore year of 1954-55 the Mustangs won their first Southwest Conference Championship since 1936-37. The Mustangs won their second straight Southwest Conference Championship in 1955-56.

Jerry Norton (1931 – 2020) - Jerry Norton was a member of the SMU Football team where he played both offense and defense and was also one of the top punters in the nation. Upon graduating from SMU, he was selected in the 7th. round of the NFL Draft by the . During his first year with the Eagles, he played safety and had five interceptions. After that, he played running back and was trad- ed to the Chicago Cardinals in 1959. During his years in professional football he was named to play in five Pro Bowls and made All-Pro in 1960.

Cleve Whitener III (1950– 2020)- Cleve Whitener played football for Southern Methodist University where he completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. As a senior and First Team Academic All-American, Cleve was one of two National Scholar-Athletes honored in New York with the 1972 “Red” Blaik Award for the nation’s best collegiate scholar athletes by the National Football Foundation.
