and UV lights. Magically he drew an upside down image of the Tournament logo lit by a diya, to the tune of Kenny G’s saxophone. In the concluding flourish, Jayaprasad then turned round the black canvass to reveal the LOGO and symbolically handed over the painting to S/Shri PP Upadhya, MD, MRPL, Vijay G. Joshi, Director Refinery, Y. Ravindranath, CVO & Ananthram, Chief Arbiter for the Tournament. The painting is on display at the MEC.

Soonafter the lamp lighting ceremony followed. Speaking at the inaugural ceremony Shri Upadhya, MD, MRPL pointed out the support provided by Oil Sector Ministry and its PSUs to nurture sport and talent that bring back honour to the Nation. Shri Vijay G Joshi Director Refinery, acknowledged the value of the sports recruitment policy 2 implemented by the Govt of . Shri Y Ravindranath, CVO, MRPL appreciated the power and scale of talent from the National & international Chess platform that was available in the host MRPL Employees’ Club this morning. Shri PP Upadhya officially released the daily Tournament newsletter “E4 C5 Moments & Moves” being done as a tribute to the illustrious group of PSPB Chess players and the sport by MRPL. Welcome address was done by Shri Sathyanarayan, GM Instrumentation & Chairman Organising Committee and Vote of Thanks by Shri Ramasubramanium, Dy Mgr, P&A.

Day ONE : Today’s forenoon session saw 2 major upsets : In the first round Woman Grand Master (WGM) of ONGC suffered a shock defeat at the hands of former Asian Junior champion & Grand Master (GM) M. Shyam Sundar of HPCL in a rook ending game, arising out of Kings gambit. In the second round, former national champion and international master P. Konguvel of ONGC – B Team dealt a blow to GN Gopal of BPCL – A in a Dragon variation. Both (WGM) Koneru Humpy of ONGC and GrandMaster GN Gopal of BPCL recovered their form by the close of the day. . The three top seeded teams BPCL – A, ONGC – A, and IndianOil – A Teams shared the lead with four match points each at the end of the second round at the close of the first 3 day.

World women no. three, WGM Koneru Humpy of ONGC suffered a shock defeat at the hands of former Asian Junior champion M. Shyam Sundar of HPCL in a rook ending game, arising out of Kings gambit. of OIL India Ltd offered resistance to Indian No. 2 GM P. Harikrishna of BPCL – A, before surrendering.

In the second round, former national champion and international master P. Konguvel of ONGC – B team dealt a blow to grandmaster GN Gopal of BPCL – A in a Dragon variation. However, he went on to win, as the other three players of his team registered comfortable wins. The ONGC – A team, led by Indian Team Captain GM K Sasikiran scored a sweeping win over IndianOil – B Team, a 4 – 0 win. WGM Koneru Humpy regained her form to beat WGM Soumya Swaminathan of IndianOil B-Team on the top board.
