JUNE 2013 ISSUE #613 MONDAY - FRIDAY 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM

2323 Woodlands Blvd. Castle Rock, CO 80104 Office: 303.688.9498 Fax: 303.814.1035 www.castlerockseniorcenter.org WHAT’S INSIDE A Letter from the Director I am really pleased that people feel that they can PAGE come into my office and ask me anything! I do have Recognitions & Volunteering 3 an open door policy. Sometimes the door is closed Rockworthy 4 when I am writing grants, and even in that small Health & Wellness 5 instance Debbi usually tries to help whomever may be wishing Rocktivities 6 to speak to me. If it is important, and can’t wait, she will get my attention. Advertisements 7 Rockin’ Happenings 8 One of the questions asked of me was, “Can I bring my own lunch to Lunch More Rockin’ Happenings 9 and Learn, and skip paying the Activity Fee?” The answer is yes, of course you Calendar 10-11 can bring your own lunch; however, the fee will remain the same. The reason for this is that we actually have cost associated with each Lunch and Learn. We What’s New This Month 12-13 pay our Wellness Coordinator Colleen Morton, R.N to find interesting Of Interest 14 – speakers/educators, to purchase and provide a nutritious lunch, and for her time Advertisements 15 managing our wellness programs that she provides. So, is it fair that people Around the Community 16 could partake of the speaker and ask questions, without paying the Activity Fee, Our Rockin’ Members 17 just because they bring their own lunch? Well, no it really isn’t. Please keep What’s Been Happening 18 this in mind. I hope that not only did this answer the person who asked, but maybe answered it for all those who were also wondering. Thank you for the Rockin’ Activity Sign-Up Sheet 19 question and the opportunity to answer it.

2013 BOARD OF DIRECTORS & STAFF The other question asked of me was, “Can we play cards and/or games in the Board/Library Room?” The answer, honestly, is that we prefer to have that EXECUTIVE OFFICERS room be left open - except for meetings - for those wishing to use the Library. President Rich Smoski We, the staff and Board of Directors, use that room for various meetings. We do Vice-Presidents Julia Keeler not place all the meetings on the Calendar as most meetings are short notice. Doris Rollins We have staff meetings, group meetings, advisory board meetings, fundraising meetings, golf tournament meetings and many more that can be last minute Secretary Vivien Semryck requests. We will always look at the Back Room and/or the Craft Room first, and Treasurer Pat Cavaliere then maybe the lobby area, before agreeing to the use of the Board/Library room. I hope that answers it for all of you that were wondering. We can only COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSONS hope that one day (even if a dream) we will have a little more space to use! Activities Dolores Larson Community Liaison Al Wonstolen One area of concern the staff brought to my attention was the noise level when one event is ending and the next one will begin soon. People gather in the Facilities Phyllis Tumey hallway just before entering the Great Room where the event is happening and History Gail Adams begin talking, or they gather around the sign-in counter when they’re getting Membership Fran Cason ready to leave on a trip. What the staff would like to see is that while you are Publicity Brad Smith waiting to leave for a trip, please gather in the lobby outside our office area Transportation Bill Kelly until the vehicle is ready for loading, and please keep the noise down when waiting to enter the Great Room for an event when one has not let out yet. Born in Brighton under extraordinary circumstances, his grandmother, a country midwife, delivered him at home in the middle of a January snowstorm while at the same time delivering his soon-to-be cousin. This native Coloradan attended North High School in Denver, and then joined the Navy after graduation. Following his deployment to Guam, Jim joined Lockheed-Martin (which become Martin-Marietta) and would met his future bride, Sharon, there - as she just happened to be his bosses’ secretary! Jim worked for Martin Marietta for 38 years, and raised four kids, three daughters and a son, with Sharon. This past February marked 44 years of marriage together! In addition to this, Jim and Sharon have three granddaughters and one great grandson. After spending many years as a city boy, he became a country man in 1979 with a move to Franktown. There he would learn to ride a horse he had acquired, and his country adventures began. One such adventure included Fox Hunting on his big buckskin horse, complete with English hunting attire (although in Colorado coyotes substitute for foxes)! Can’t you just hear him saying “Pip Pip Cheerio!?” They sold their home in Franktown in 1997, when Jim retired, and spent the next three and a half years on the road traveling the U.S. in their RV. After returning to the Rocky Mountain state, they spent summers here and winters in Texas. They called the Southern Texas coast their winter home near Padre Island and Brownsville. They have spent time in both Europe and in Costa Rica on mission trips. As a man of faith, Jim’s volunteer efforts have included clearing land for a new church in Costa Rica with a machete, working their Men’s Ministry, teaching Bible studies, along with other projects. His faith is very important to him. As a volunteer shuttle and events driver for the Castle Rock Senior Center, Jim has been very active for many years, including helping with several of our fundraisers - Craft Show, Golf Tournament, etc. Volunteer of the Month of the Month Volunteer Jim also is active with the Friday Current Events group and will be starting to help with the computer instruction for the Center. In addition, he has served as a leader for 4-H Douglas County Horse club for a number of years. His hobbies include playing on his computer, watching old movies and reading. He belongs to a camping club that camps each month during the summer. Jim, thank you for all that you do and making your mark on the Center. ~Debbi & the Staff

Colleen Morton, R.N. Headaches….we all have them for a variety of reasons, but when should you be Wellness Coordinator concerned? Tension headaches, caused by tight muscles in your shoulders, neck, scalp Castle Rock Senior Center and jaw are the most common. Many people suffer from diagnosed migraine headaches which can be severe and associated with other symptoms such as vision changes or nausea. Sinus headaches cause pain in the front of our head and face. These are due to swelling in your nasal passages behind your cheeks, nose and eyes. The pain is often worse when you first wake up and if you bend forward, which in- creases the pressure in these areas. A swollen, inflamed artery which supplies blood to part of your head, temple and neck area that can cause headaches in a disorder called temporal arteritis.

But, when should you be concerned and seek immediate medical help (call 911)? Your headache comes on suddenly and is severe – explosive and violent You would describe your headache as your worst ever, even if you regularly get headaches You also have slurred speech, a change in vision, problems moving your arms or leg, loss of balance, confusion, or memory loss If you headache gets worse over a 24 hour period You also have a fever, stiff neck, nausea and vomiting with your headache Your headache occurs with a head injury Your headache is severe and just in one eye, with redness in that eye You are over 50 and your headaches just began, especially if you also have vision problems and pain while chewing You have cancer and develop a new headache All these symptoms could mean that you have more than just a headache going on – like a stroke, meningitis, or high blood pressure. Seeking medical help quickly could save you or a loved one’s’ life. (source: NIH) This month we are lucky to have two free opportunities at the Senior Center! 13 What if you could fit an entire library’s collection in the palm of your hand? That is part of the idea behind an upcoming “bookless” public library in San Antonio, a digital-only library. Yes, maybe you could find what you need easily with an online collection. However, for me, the touch and feel of a book is exciting! I think that our generation likes to hold a book or newspaper in our hands and feel the words on paper!
