ANNUAL REPORT 2015 MISSION The American Quarter Foundation supports equine related educational and charitable programs that create opportunities to enrich the lives of people and . The Foundation Council 2015 Annual Report

Dear Treasured Friends, Every time I visit the Hall of Fame and Museum, I am moved by the splendor of the entrance. From the herd of Quarter Horses galloping across the face of the pavilion, to the magnificence of the Grand Hall with the 12’ Quarter Horse medallion drawing us in as we are greeted by the members whose plaques grace its hallowed walls, this place makes me proud! It makes me proud of our horse, proud of our association, proud of our mission, and proud of our way of life. Our horse, the American Quarter Horse, has given so much to our country because of his versatility and his partnership with mankind. The Hall of Fame and Museum captures that history, while it promotes the work of our horse that continues today. You too should be proud, because this place is your place. The Hall of Fame and Museum is, in many ways, the symbol that promotes our belief in the vocation of giving and is revealed in the work of the American Quarter Horse Foundation. Through the Foundation, your gifts help foster many good works that impact so many today and will do so for generations to come. I hope that you will take the time to appreciate the information contained in this annual report of the American Quarter Horse Foundation and know that you are making a difference. You are impacting the lives of young people, the health of our horses, and ministering to the special needs of those who are challenged by life as it has been given to them. You should be proud of this work, because you are the American Quarter Horse Foundation! Thank you for your continued support!

AQHF | 2015 | ANNUAL REPORT 1 Breathing Easy | By Laura Owens

Growing up I remember helping my grandfather in the barn. I would clean stalls, feed and sometimes even help him ‘doctor’ horses. On occasion I witnessed some gruesome stuff, but one of the most confusing times for me was when his roping horse Badger (Badger Joe Cat) developed heaves. I was about eight years old when my grandfather told me, “Think of heaves just like your allergies, and aren’t some times worse than others?” Equine heaves, also known as Recurrent Airway Obstruction or RAO, is a chronic respiratory disease similar to asthma in humans. Heaves is frequently diagnosed in adult horses and is believed to result from an allergic reaction to dust particles, such as molds that are often found in hay or in the barn. Despite the high number of horses affected by heaves, the exact triggers for RAO and their sources are not known. When a new molecular method called immunoproteomics was developed, researchers at Purdue University conducted a study to determine how the process could help industry professionals identify the specific molds or fungi that cause heaves. Through this study, it was determined that it is more important to know hay dust composition than how dusty the hay is, and that the same fungi can be found in moldy and good hay. Both hay types can trigger an asthmatic attack in horses with RAO. “The AQHF grant allowed us to determine that “Because I come from four RAO horses produced antibodies recognizing specific generations of Quarter Horse molds,” said lead researcher Dr. Laurent Couetil. owners and breeders, it is “Hopefully, this will lead to the possibility of testing important for me to know I’m horses to find out what triggers their respiratory allergy.” supporting horse health. That’s Researchers are already working toward the next why I give to equine research.” steps and believe future studies should confirm the Laura Owens individual fungal species responsible for RAO attacks, which will help find new ways to test for and treat heaves. All those afternoons helping my grandfather in the barn fostered a passion for our horse and his well-being. Equine research is crucial to better understanding the issues that affect our horses.

AQHF | 2015 | ANNUAL REPORT 5 Through the use of equine-assisted activities and therapies (EAAT), thousands of special-needs individuals can experience the rhythmic motion of a horse. This movement allows those with physical, cognitive or emotional limitations to enjoy the same freedoms we take for granted, and improve balance, muscle strength and flexibility. The America’s Horse Cares grant program awards funding to centers that provide equine-assisted activities and therapies to individuals with special needs to support continuing education and professional certification for therapists, mental health professionals, center employees and volunteers who work one-on-one with clients. Through America’s Horse Cares, the Foundation has awarded over $575,000 to support EAAT. “Without supporters like the American Quarter Horse Foundation, we would not be able to bring the awesome power of the horse to those who need it most. Your generosity throughout the country is well known,” Cathy Alwine, Director of Development, Reins of Life Inc., South Bend, Indiana. “Because of your support and our volunteers, we are able to continue and expand our program of helping our students, both physically and socially, to improve their quality of life and therapeutic education through horseback riding and equestrian activities. Your continued support helps us to meet this goal,” Donna Brandt, President, Therapeutic Riding Center of Huntington Beach, California.

2015 AQHF American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame Inductees

Tom Bradbury | Byers, Colorado Tom Bradbury of Byers, Colorado, began his Bradbury Land and Cattle Co. ranch in 1958, raising Hereford and Red Angus cattle. In 1987, he purchased Dash For Speed, a track record-setting mare who was world champion in 1990 and earned $1.25 million on the track. Bradbury also owned syndicated shares in Wave Carver, First Down Dash and Teller Cartel. Bradbury has been involved in many national agriculture and livestock groups and is an AQHA Director Emeritus. He served in community organizations and is on the Colorado State University alumni board. He also is involved with the National Western Stock Show.

James E. Helzer | Arlington, Texas James E. Helzer of Arlington, Texas, is a 20-year breeder of American Quarter Horses who served as AQHA president in 2009-10. The racing breeder and his wife, Marilyn, bought their first racehorse in 1962. While working in the defense industry, Helzer trained racehorses on the side and eventually became a roofing contractor who built a business that grew to nine states and 33 locations. In 1990, he bought Refrigerator, who won that year’s All American Futurity, became a two-time world champion in racing, retired as the then all-time leading money earner with $2,126,309. In 1993, Helzer turned his business expertise to breeding American Quarter Horses and established the first of his stallion stations in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

Stanley Johnston | Miller, South Dakota The late Stanley Johnston was a man who liked speed in his ranch horses. When he began breeding American Quarter Horses at his ranch in South Dakota, he introduced a band of Driftwood mares to cross on his stallion, Poco Speedy. In addition to breeding stars, Johnston’s influence spread throughout South Dakota, where many ranchers in the area still advertise that their breeding program includes Johnston-bred horses.

Ted Wells, Jr. | Pawhuska, Oklahoma The late Ted Wells Jr. inherited a legacy, and he knew what to do with it. Wells’ father had owned Hall of Fame stallion Leo, and Wells owned and trained Leo’s earliest offspring. Wells conditioned Lena’s Bar, the dam of Jet Smooth and , and he conditioned Savannah Jr to win the 1965 All American Futurity and be the champion 2-year-old colt in 1965 and the champion 3-year-old in 1966. At the 1971 All American Futurity, three of the top 10 horses were bred at Wells Ranch in Oklahoma, where Wells stood Savannah Jr and Azure Te.

8 AQHF | 2015 | ANNUAL REPORT Azure Te (TB) | Nashville (TB) – Blue One (TB) Azure Te was foaled in 1962 and raced on tracks until he bowed a tendon and was retired. He then was purchased by Burnett Ranches as an outcross Thoroughbred stallion to complement American Quarter Horse broodmares. From his first American Quarter Horse foal crop, Azure Te placed three finalists in the All American Futurity. At the time of his death in 1983, he was the all-time leading Thoroughbred sire of Quarter Racehorses, a title he claimed for nearly 10 years.

Corona Chick | Chicks Beduino – Sizzling Lil Corona Chick started fast and only got faster. She began her race career May 17, 1991, placing second, one of the few times in her life that she was not first. She set two track records in her life and was the 1991 racing champion 2-year-old filly and 1992 racing champion 3-year-old filly. As a broodmare, Corona Chick became an American Quarter Horse Dam of Distinction. Of her 16 foals, 14 starters earned $3.6 million.

Coy’s Bonanza | Jaguar – Sparky Joann In 1961, Coy’s Bonanza earned seven grand championships and 10 reserve championships at . In 1963, he was shown at halter 53 times to 40 grand championships and 13 reserves, making him the 1963 high-point halter stallion. Coy’s Bonanza became an AQHA Champion and earned points in reining, and . From 16 foal crops, Coy’s Bonanza had 26 foals become AQHA Champions. A total of 112 earned 4,633 halter points, and 117 earned 4,248 performance points.

Plaudit | Plaudit (TB) – Colorado Queen Plaudit was foaled in 1930 and purchased by Coke Roberds as a 3-month-old. He passed through a few more owners before landing with Waite Philips at Philmont Ranch at Cimarron, New Mexico. Plaudit was used as a working ranch horse, as well as a breeding stallion, and was occasionally raced on bush tracks for 10 years. The stallion sired horses that were successful in the show pen and on the track. Plaudit became known as a broodmare sire through his daughters and granddaughters.

Smart Little Lena | Doc O’Lena – Smart Peppy When was foaled, his name came from his small size. The stallion never let his size stop him, though, as he won the 1982 National Association Futurity and followed that win up with first-place finishes in the NCHA Super Stakes and NCHA Derby to claim cutting’s triple crown. After his triple crown win, he was syndicated before heading to the breeding shed, where he sired money-earning foals in reining, working cow horse and cutting.

AQHF | 2015 | ANNUAL REPORT 9 “If there ever was a person who exemplifies what the Merle Wood Humanitarian Award has in mind, that person is Dawn Forest,” Nancy Cahill, 1996 Professional Horsewoman of the Year.

Dawn Forest | College Station, Texas 2015 Merle Wood Humanitarian Award Recipient Scared to death of horses, Dawn Forest of College Station, Texas, didn’t start out like most people in the industry. As the mother of a daughter who fell in love with the American Quarter Horse, Dawn was quickly educated. During daughter Katie Schroeder’s youth career, Dawn became involved through various organizations and projects while traveling from show to show. Dawn soon joined the Texas Quarter Horse Association’s youth committee and spent the next 15 years on the show committee and as a youth director. Dawn began managing the AQHYA World Show team for Texas Quarter Horse in 1997, and in 2000 she added the AQHA Youth World Cup responsibilities to her already busy plate. “She seeks out youth from all corners of the state to be members of the TQHYA team and enjoy the fun of the AQHYA World Championship Show,” said Wanda Waters, past president of Texas Quarter Horse Association. “She is paving a runway for a better future for AQHA with each youth she encourages and gets involved.” Dawn has had many roles while volunteering with TQHA, including serving as president in 2004, and she spends countless hours each year preparing for upcoming events. She is especially looking forward to 2018 when the Youth World Cup returns to College Station. On top of her activities with Texas Quarter Horse, Dawn is an active volunteer for the Texas A&M University equestrian team and currently serves as a board member for the Texas A&M Equine Initiative.

The generosity of our donors is pivotal to the American Quarter Horse Foundation’s success in developing and maintaining programs that enrich the lives of people and horses. Recognizing your contributions is an important part of expressing our gratitude and demonstrating how your efforts inspire others to join in supporting the work of the Foundation. Beginning this year, the American Quarter Horse Foundation will recognize donors by their lifetime contributions rather than by gifts annually. We feel that this more appropriately acknowledges your generosity as well as the impact of your giving over time. Therefore, we will longer publish the donor recognition list quarterly in our newsletter, but will recognize donors annually in the Foundation’s Annual Report. This will enhance our stewardship of your gifts by reducing publication costs while allowing us to distribute the annual report more broadly. Thank you for support as we strive to make positive and meaningful enhancements to our programs. Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy. Should you have any changes, corrections or questions, please contact the Development office at 806-378-5029 [email protected].

AQHF | 2015 | ANNUAL REPORT 23 A Message from Brent Davison | Chief Foundation Officer

During my orientation in the first few weeks with the Foundation, I had the chance to sit with a number of staff members across many disciplines to learn about their roles and responsibilities, as well as simply get acquainted. As it goes with these conversations, I had a chance to ask, “So what brought you to AQHA/AQHF?” There was one divergent response that stuck in my mind; “When I first came on board I could not believe that all of this came about because of a horse!” After contemplating this response for some time, I concluded that, for those who are not AQHA members or horse lovers in general, that might be a rather common reaction looking at the successful organization that is AQHA. Traveling the country over my first few months and meeting AQHA members, I gained a reflective and insightful perspective. Common to most every member are four qualities: passion, devotion, sacrifice and perseverance. These behaviors infuse every aspect of their life. However, they are most clearly represented in their relationship with the American Quarter Horse. Valuing that, it is no wonder that in 1975 members of AQHA felt an even higher calling to give to the American Quarter Horse and further enhance the unique bond and partnership we share by forming the American Quarter Horse Foundation. In the time since, outstanding programs have been at work supporting youth, horses and individuals in need, in addition to preserving our rich and versatile history. Youth programs include scholarships supporting educational and vocational aspirations, leadership and character development, citizenship, elementary and secondary education programs, cultural enrichment, as well as equine education and promotion of the equine lifestyle. We are supporting our horse’s health through equine research and supporting his/her capacity to help individuals in need through equine assisted activities and therapies. These are the good works of the American Quarter Horse Foundation. And I feel we are just getting started! Working with staff and the Foundation Council, we are putting together a robust strategic plan and innovative vision for the future. We still have a lot of work to do, but the preliminary plans are taking shape; and we will be moving forward with purpose, drive and determination to engage you and other AQHA members in joining our pursuit to become the heart of AQHA! My strong belief is that AQHA will shine brighter than it already does if we lead with a unified mission in promoting and supporting the work of the American Quarter Horse Foundation. It is my aspiration that the American Quarter Horse Association and American Quarter Horse Foundation will become known throughout the horse industry and beyond for our mission and the good works that we do. Then people will remark, “Wow, and all this . . . because of a horse!”

Brent Davison Chief Foundation Officer
