Chemical Conservation Division Projects implemented in 2011  Conservation of paintings in the ancient cave temple , Handala

Handagala Ancient Cave Temple is situated in the Divisional Secretariat Division Kahatagasdigiliya of Anuradhapura District. This cave is of special historical value due to the availability of a rock cave with remaining parts of paintings believed to be of Anuradhapura Era.

Two parts of colored mortar are seen on the canopy of a rock cave situated at the mountain enclosed number of rock caves with carved ditches at the edge of them. The main part of the plaster has been pricked by insects. The other part of the plaster was covered with dark green color Algae. The layers of plaster were decayed and the colored layers were detaching in small pieces.

The conservation group including the project in charge Mr. Gemini Udakanda, Conservation Assistant was able to reveal other paintings when the layer of Algae which had been growing for a long time was removed by means of a swab soaked in clean water. A painting of women holding some thing like a stick and some lines under it could be revealed.

The holes of dilapidated layer of plaster were filled with suitable motor reinforced and the colored layer from which small pieces were detached were stuck with small piece. Finally a mixture of 3% Paranoid and B 72 Sayalin included preservation liquid was applied.

Parts of painting s believed to be of Anuradhapura Era.

Chemicals are being injected to the mortar in order to reinforce it.
